Sat 8 Aug 1903 Death
Naggs - August 2nd, drowned in the Aire and Calder Canal, at Old Mill,
Barnsley, William Naggs, of 2 Court, 3 Albert Street, aged 10 years.

                      Boy drowned in Canal
A very sad case of drowning occurred on Sunday afternoon, at Old Mill, at
about 300 yards from the Aire and Calder Canal Bridges, formed the subject of an
inquiry held by Mr C. J. Haworth (deputy coroner) at the Barnsley Town Hall on
Tuesday morning. The victim was a lad named William Knaggs, aged 10 years,
son of Frederick Knaggs, miner, of 3 Court, 2 Albert Street. Deceased, it
appeared, was playing on the canal bank with two other boys, named Ellis Firth
(his cousin) and William Thorp, and was running along the towing path some
distance in front of the latter, when he accidentally slipped into the canal. Firth at
once raised an alarm by running to Knaggs‟s mother, saying “Willie‟s drowned!”.
In the meantime Walter Hobson Bedford, mechanic, of 41 Farrar Street, who was
out for a walk along the canal bank, about 4 o‟clock, noticed a boy‟s cap floating
on the water, and then saw the body of the deceased, who was lying on his back.
Bedford, with the assistance of a man named Barham, recovered the body and
prompt means of respiration were resorted to, but without avail, and when Police
Sergeant Darrington arrived, Dr Blackburn was sent for, but the latter was only
able to pronounce life extinct. The police officer said he should say the body had
been in the water about an hour. There were no marks of violence on it. The lad
Firth stated that deceased was wearing a shade over his left eye, which was
nearest the water, and it seemed to be the opinion of the jury that this might
possibly have obstructed Knaggs‟s sight and caused him to miss his footing. A
verdict of “Accidental Drowning” was returned.

Sat 8 Mar 1941 Diamond Wedding
Mr and Mrs James Knaggs celebrated their diamond wedding at Whitley
Bay. They were married at the old Register Office, Middlesbrough on February
24th 1881. Both are natives of Coatham, also the grandparents and parents.
Mr Knaggs started work in early life. His father died in 1863. He
delivered the “Redcar and Saltburn Gazette and Visitor” when only turned eight
years of age. For one summer. Then at nine, he was errand lad in a boot and
shoe business for four years, making him thirteen. His mother wanted him to go
to learn a trade so he went to be a joiner and stayed three years in Redcar. He
worked on the Cemetery - present Council Offices, when built as two villas for
Messrs Hogg and Cochrane. He then went to Whitley to see his sister and
brother in law, Mr Alfred Styan, for a holiday. His brother in law was one of the
first builders to start Whitley as a seaside resort. He started with him as an
improver and stayed with him sixteen years. That was in 1891, and was for ten
years the foreman. He left him and started on the old N E Railway as clerk of
works under the architect, and served 34 years service. The rules of the Company
are, on reaching the age of 65 you must be put on the shelf. He retired on New
Years Day of 1924 on superannuation, now being retired 16 years.
Mr Knaggs‟s grandfather, Mr Thomas Hardy, born in Coatham in 1803,
was a boot and shoe maker and always kept 6 shoemakers and 3 or 4 apprentices.
It was in those days a large and important trade as all had to be made by hand.
Mr Hardy was for years sworn in as a special constable in Coatham before
a regular one was appointed. Coatham then was in the parish of Kirkleatham,
and the court house was at Guisborough. Mr Knaggs‟s father was one of Mr
Hardy‟s apprentices. In after years he married the eldest daughter of Hardy‟s.
He was cut off at an early age (48) and left a large family of nine. Mr Knaggs is
the last of their family.
Mrs Knaggs‟s grandfather, born in 1802, was butler to Lady Vansittart at
Kirkleatham Hall. Her grandmother was lady‟s maid and travelled with her on
her travels. Now like other people they married and left the Hall. That was in
1828. When the Lobster Inn was vacant the Lady put them into it to start life.
Mrs Knaggs‟s father was the first born of the family in the Lobster Inn. He had
eight brothers and one sister. She was the last born - all in the Lobster Inn. At
that time a farm was attached to it and farm hands were employed. This old
gentleman brewed his own beer in part of the present barn, now standing.
Joseph, her father, when he had grown up, worked with his father. After staying
in the Lobster Inn much over 20 years he left and took Normanby Brewery and
brewed for some years. He retired and came back to Coatham in Vansittart
Terrace, where he passed away at a big age.
Her father was then left on his own, was married. His father was owner of
this Old Ship Inn at Marske-by-the-Sea. He bought it from his father and carried
on business there for many years until he sold it to the brewers who pulled it
down and have built a fine new Ship Hotel on part of the old site. Years after he
died when butchering at 66 High Street, Redcar.
Mr and Mrs Knaggs have had a family of four daughters and one son.
Three daughters survive. At their family gathering Mr Knaggs‟s youngest sister
was with them at 49 Zetland Road, Redcar. They received 10 telegrams (one
from a nephew Capt. Harold Richardson, from Galvaston, Texas), and 15 letters.
They are both in fairly good health considering the war, weather and old age. Mr
Knaggs is 83 years old and Mrs Knaggs 82.

Huddersfield Daily Examiner

Mon 24 Apr 1911 The Late Dr Knaggs
The doyen of Huddersfield physicians has passed away in the person of Dr
SAMUEL KNAGGS, whose death we announce elsewhere. With Dr KNAGGS the
older generation of medical practitioners comes to an end. It makes the
Huddersfield of 50 years ago grow remote indeed. In some respects the bean?
ideal of a family physician, Dr KNAGGS had a comfortable practice, which some
time ago he passed over largely to his son Dr LAWFORD KNAGGS, and devoted
himself to a cultural leisure and a kindly heart. The late Dr KNAGGS attracted
attention early in his career as a practising physician by publishing a work on the
medical aspects of insanity, which indicated careful study of an important subject
at that time not nearly so well understood as now. At intervals from that time
forward Dr KNAGGS published results of investigations and reflections on
various subjects, not all of a medical character. One of his last publications was a
pamphlet in which a number of reflections on Socialism and its tenets were
offered as an answer to the propaganda of the Socialist party. A strong
Conservative, Dr KNAGGS was always opposed to us in politics. But it is a
satisfaction now that he has passed away to recall the fact that differences of
political opinion never interfered - as they ought never to interfere - in the
smallest degree with the regard which we believe was mutually entertained, or for
the work which he and we respectively engaged during the long period in which
Dr KNAGGS was associated with the life of Huddersfield.

                     Death of Dr Knaggs
Severance of Family Association with the Royal Infirmary
The announcement is made with regret of the death of Dr Francis Henry
Knaggs, which occurred at his residence, Oak House, New North Road, last night.
Very few people were aware of the illness of the highly respected doctor, as he
had been ill only about ten days. He succumbed from the effects of pneumonia.
Dr Knaggs was a son of the late Dr Samuel Knaggs, who practised at 26
Ramsden Street for many years before removing to 2 Bradley Lane. He was born
in Huddersfield and was aged 56. The greater part of Dr Knaggs‟s early medical
education was obtained at Guys Hospital where he held no fewer than twelve
valuable practical appointments, particularly in the eye and ear departments.
Afterward for six months he was clinical assistant to the Moorfield Royal London
Ophthalmic Hospital. In 1885 he became a member of the Royal College of
Surgeons, England and in 1887 a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians,
London. From 1887 to 1889 Dr Knaggs was a house surgeon at the
Gloucestershire General Infirmary and Eye Institution. In 1889 he commenced
general practice with his father in Ramsden Street and carried it on subsequently
at Bradley Lane and latterly at Oak House. Dr Knaggs was engaged in
considerable consulting and operative work of a varied and important character
and achieved a wide reputation as a specialist in eye and ear affections. For
several years he attended the Leeds Public Dispensary, and assisted his brother
Dr Lawford Knaggs (now Major L Knaggs, R.A.M.C.), in the ophthalmic and aural
department. Dr Samuel Knaggs, the father, was senior honorary surgeon at the
Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for many years. In 1899 the Infirmary Board
decided to create an ophthalmic and aural surgeoncy as one of the departments
to be served by the honorary medical staff, and Dr F H Knaggs was appointed
honorary ophthalmic and aural surgeon on 1st February 1905. His death thus
breaks the family‟s continuous official connection with the Hull Royal Infirmary,
which has existed since the institution was first established. He was formerly
honorary secretary of the Huddersfield Medical Society.
Dr Knaggs was also a civilian medical officer at the Huddersfield War
Hospital from the date of its opening in October 1915. He received his
commission as a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps on January 25th 1916.
Dr Knaggs has contributed papers on ophthalmic subjects to the “Lancet”.
He leaves a widow and one daughter. It is probable that the funeral will
take place on Wednesday, but final arrangements have not yet been made.
