New & Improved Leadership Conference!
8:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 26 in The Woodlands, Texas
The Spring 2011 meeting is only eight weeks away. Many of you are deciding which
exciting meetings and events to attend. This 50th Anniversary celebration will be
one COPAS meeting you absolutely do not want to miss.
The spring meeting is also when we have our annual Leadership Conference for
Committee Chairs and Vice-Chairs. This four-hour gathering on Tuesday morning is
a working session with minimal breaks where the Board and committee folks talk in
detail about committee procedures and protocols. We discuss how the committees
and COPAS office interact and work with each other. We talk about moving our
organization forward. It’s all about effectiveness and efficiency.
Our committees are where the real work of COPAS is done. COPAS is a unique
industry group in that we are the ones responsible for developing the very
guidelines and rules we use to do our jobs; the better our documents, the
easier our jobs. Besides our publications, the everyday excellence of our
strong committees is recognized by other organizations and many
governmental agencies. They routinely solicit our input in drafting their own
documents and regulations. For these and other reasons, the committee
Leadership gathering is of paramount importance to keep COPAS moving forward.
This year’s Leadership Conference invitee list is being expanded well beyond
Chairs and Vice-Chairs; even beyond Committee Secretaries!
HEAR YE HEAR YE:TO EXPAND INTEREST IN SERVING ON COMMITTEES AND
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, ALL OF YOU WHO ARE INTERESTED IN ONE DAY
SERVING ON A COMMITTEE OR THE BOARD ARE ALSO INVITED TO ATTEND.
(continued on page 4)

Leadership Conference (continued from page 3)
Why is the invitee list being expanded to those not currently serving in committee
positions? Very simply, some of our newer professionals may be leery of stepping into
the queue for leadership positions because they believe they do not “know enough”
to serve. Some of our current committee Secretaries may be nervous about
“moving up.” Well, what better way to learn than to attend this Leadership
Conference where many of COPAS’ most experienced folks will be discussing our
publication procedures, our meeting protocols, interaction with the national office
and helping the Board develop concrete strategies for improving COPAS.
This is YOUR opportunity to be a sponge to the collective
experience in the room. Your contributions and fresh
perspectives are wanted and needed, but feel free to sit
back and learn if you prefer. That’s OK. Trust me, you will not be
drafted into volunteering for anything. But, you can
also trust me when I say this will be an invaluable
experience for you to gain knowledge of our organization
and how the committees work so that you can be
comfortable volunteering for a committee or board position.
How can newer professionals turn down this offer?
Give us four hours of your time, and I promise you will be getting in on the ground
floor to learn, contribute, hobnob and rub elbows with some of COPAS’ most
experienced folks as they exchange ideas and plan for the next few years.
What will this opportunity cost you? Two minutes of your time to note on your COPAS
registration that you will be attending. That’s it. If you’ve already registered, go back to
the website and add in Leadership on Tuesday morning. We need you to do that for space
planning purposes. But only sign up for the morning; attendance at the Leadership Dinner
is restricted to one representative per committee and society presidents or designees.
Society Presidents and Chairs: Please distribute this invitation to your societies and
committee members to ensure all have the opportunity to attend. A detailed agenda will
be sent closer to the Conference.

About COPAS Publications…
COPAS has developed and published publications
since 1961. Model Forms, Model Form Interpretations, and
Accounting Guidelines are approved by the COPAS Council, and
represent a broad consensus of COPAS membership. These
documents have become part of
operating agreements and contracts.
Training & Reference materials and programs are designed
to provide education and guidance to the industry for specific
job performance in accounting, reporting, and auditing matters.
Prior to 2007, most of these publications were called “Bulletins”
or “Interpretations.” All have been re-designated using the new
naming structure, which more accurately reflects the use of each
document. See COPAS Publications Reference Catalog TR-39
for additional information. TR-39 is available FREE at
Reflections on the past…and into the Future!
Don’t miss a minute of the spring meeting 50th anniversary events!
The summer issue of ACCOUNTS will be a special commemorative issue, focused specifically on the
50th anniversary. The issue will be filled with photos, and observations from COPAS members
of special COPAS memories from the past, as well as predictions for COPAS in the future.
Ideally, comments will be both reflective and humorous, especially in your forecasts for the
future of COPAS. Just think about it, things have changed a lot in the last 50 years…
we can only imagine what it will be like in 50 more years!
Hopefully, responses will represent members from across our total membership. Comments do
not necessarily need to be lengthy. Please take a few moments to jot down your thoughts and
send them in! Upon request, we will assist you with writing/editing. Feel free to
contact members from the past and submit their comments also!
