Hard - do damage by bending wires, loosening the cement under the bands or breaking the
brackets.
Sticky & Chewy - do damage by bending wires and pulling cement loose.
SWEETS - do NOT break brackets or bend wires but DO cause WHITE SPOTS. If you eat
sweets, brush immediately afterwards. If you cannot brush, ALWAYS rinse your mouth with clear
water after eating sweet foods.
GUM - is okay as long as it is SUGAR-FREE and contains the artificial sweetener XYLITOL.
Chewing gum can help alleviate dental soreness. Additionally, xylitol has been shown to kill the
bacteria that causes cavities. However, if your chewing gum causes you to break any of your
appliances or discomfort in your jaw we will ask that you stop chewing gum for the remainder of
your treatment.
