In My Family - Carmen Lomas Garza Copies: 1

Garza uses her narrative paintings to relate her memories of growing up in Kingsville, Texas, near the

Mexican border, and to reflect her pride in her Mexican American heritage. The artist portrays everyday

events as well as special moments of family history.



Jamaica and Brianna - Juanita Havill Copies: 1

Peer approval and the need for good communication are the themes of this quietly appealing story. Like

many younger siblings, Jamaica is often stuck wearing hand-me-downs, in this case, her big brother's "old

gray boots."



Jamaica and the Substitute Teacher- Juanita Havill Copies: 1

Jamaica and her classmates have a substitute teacher for the week, Mrs. Duval. When it's time for the

spelling test, Jamaica copies from a friend. Troubled, she confesses to Mrs. Duval, who reassures her that

she doesn't have to be perfect to be special in her class.



Jamaica Tag – Along - Juanita Havill Copies: 1

Jamaica wants to tag along to Ossie's pick-up basketball game, but he forbids it. After all, it's not cool to

have a younger sister hanging around. She sneaks along anyway, and causes her brother and another

player to fall down on the court when she springs from nowhere and grabs the ball.



Jamaica's Blue Marker - Juanita Havill Copies: 1

Jamaica is not thrilled about having to share her blue marker with Russell. He never has the supplies he

needs, and this time he takes the marker and draws all over her picture. The next day, she discovers that

he is moving. With the help of her father, she begins to understand that her classmate is mean because he

is unhappy about leaving and gives him her blue marker to remember her by.



Jamaica's Find- Juanita Havill Copies: 1

Jamaica finds a hat and a stuffed dog at the playground. She returns the hat to the lost and found easily,

but retains the dog because she likes it. The struggle of Jamaica when she finds a stuffed toy and doesn't

want to take it to the lost and found must be resolved.

This program emphasizes the power of positive "self-talk." It encourages elementary school children to

concentrate on what they can do, not what they can't do. Viewers realize that one accomplishment can give

them the confidence to accomplish even more.



Yoko- Rosemary Wells Copies: 1

Yoko the kitten has gone off to her school with her willow-covered cooler filled with sushi. Her classmates

tease her mercilessly when lunchtime rolls around. A pat ending seems in sight when Yoko's wise teacher

plans an International Food Day and requires the students to try everything.

Different Just Like Me - Lori Mitchell Copies: 1

Though people are different from one another in some ways, basically they are alike. Young April comes to

this conclusion as she rides a bus with two children who communicate in sign language, watches a blind

woman reading Braille numbers next to an elevator and washes her hands in a rest room alongside a

woman in a wheelchair.



Families - Ann Morris Copies: 1

Morris shows readers that "all children-are part of families" and that they come in all sizes, nationalities,

and configurations. The format varies so that each page features one large or several smaller pictures. The

text explains: "People in families love and care for one another-help one another-play together-cook-eat-

and celebrate together."

The Car Washing Street- Denise Lewis Patrick Copies: 1

Every Saturday morning, something special happens on Matthew's block. When neighbors, cars, and

buckets of water all come together on the hottest day of the year, a city street is a very special place to be.



The Color of Home -Mary Hoffman Copies: 4

Hassan, a recent immigrant from Somalia, is homesick on his first day of school in America. When the

teacher distributes art supplies, Hassan paints two pictures, one to share the story of his life in Somalia,

and another that depicts his hope for a bright future in his new home. Readers gain a realistic child's

perspective on what it is like to be forced to emigrate from a war-torn country.



The Name Jar-Yangsook Choi Copies: 1

Because of her Korean name Unhei is teased by the children on the bus on the way to her first day of

school. When she reaches her classroom and is asked her name, she tells her classmates that she has not

yet decided on one. To be helpful the children put their suggestions into a "name jar." Eventually the girl

decides to keep her own name as one of her classmates takes pride in the new Korean nickname he has

chosen, Chinku, meaning "friend."



I Pledge Allegiance - Bill Martin Jr. & Michael Sampson Copies: 1

The Pledge of Allegiance is broken into digestible phrases or words and their meaning is explained along

the way with some history. As the text defines and explains each phrase or concept, the authors also

include interesting background, such as the meaning behind the colors in the American flag and the

pledge's origins.



This Land is Your Land -Woody Guthrie Copies: 1

From California to the New York Island, readers of all ages will be singing the praises of this picture-book

tribute to a legendary folk musician and one of his best-known compositions. The popular version of the

song, recorded in 1949, omitted some of Guthrie's original lyrics. Restored here, those verses broaden the

song, transforming it to an anthem for the downtrodden.



Who Belongs Here? An American Story- Margy Burns Knight Copies: 1

Nary, a Cambodian refugee who immigrates to the U.S. with his grandmother after the death of both

parents is used to Hostility toward immigrants and the impetus to work for change is explored. The central

question, "What if everyone whose ancestors came from another country was forced to return to his or her

homeland? Who would be left?" signals the book's design as a vehicle for discussion.

For Every Child - Caroline Castle Copies: 1

This extraordinary book features 14 of the most pertinent rights of the child, carefully chosen and retold in

simple, evocative text that can be easily understood by every child. Each right has been interpreted in a

stunning double-page spread by some of the world's most acclaimed artists.



For Every Child a Better World - Jim Henson Copies: 1

Nine statements outlining children's basic needs and how they often go unmet are discussed. While the

characters are in a cartoon style, they express real emotions, and their settings are composed of realistic

elements. Images and motifs from many cultures appear in the illustrations and borders implying that plenty

and deprivation occur all over the world.



I Will Fight No More Forever (Video) - Richard T Heffron Copies: 1

The story itself is powerful and engrossing on its own merits. The Nez Perce who had signed a treaty with

the government to inhabit the Oregon River Valley were given an ultimatum by the US government in 1877

voiding that treaty. They had four days to decide whether to move or fight. General Howard went to fight

against this injustice, but in the end, felt compelled to execute his orders, even though he knew them to be

unjust. The movie wisely maintains its focus on this journey and struggle.



Roxaboxen - Alice McLerran Copies: 1

Roxaboxen celebrates the imagination of children who, no matter the time or place, can create whole

worlds out of what they find around them--here, rocks and boxes, cacti and sand.



You're Not My Best Friend Anymore - Charlotte Pomerantz Copies: 0

This earnest look at conflict and reconciliation will be most appreciated by adults wishing to review

relationship skills with young listeners. Molly and Ben are neighbors and friends. Their falling out comes

when they can't agree on which tent to purchase with their combined allowances. Although they stay angry

for several days, all is forgiven when they give one another sleeping bags as birthday gifts and decide to

camp out together in the backyard.



The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, an Adaptation for Children- Ruth Rocha Copies: 1

This book is a lovely picture book about the complicated subject of human rights. The author rewrote parts

of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to help children understand this subject. Rocha reduces the

Declaration's articles into easily understood one or two line sentences. This allows children to grasp the

essence of human rights, and makes the book a great introduction to human rights.

Choosing Up Sides - John Ritter Copies: 1

Luke's conflicts with his father, a volatile fundamentalist preacher, take on a new dimension when

classmates urge Luke to join the local baseball team. Luke's left-handedness and good pitching are not the

only trouble; participation in sports is strictly forbidden by his church. Luke's movement toward

independence is realistically cautious but frustratingly slow, until his father's accidental death brings a quick

turn of events and tidy solution to problems.

Molly Bannaky - Alice McGill Copies: 1

The story of the grandmother of Benjamin Banneker is turned into an exciting visual experience. The story

of an English dairymaid sent to the gallows but saved because she could read from the Bible. She is exiled

to America where she serves seven years as an indentured servant in Maryland. When finally granted her

freedom she stakes her claim and starts a farm. She purchases an African slave, Bannaky, vowing to treat

him well and to set him free once her land is cleared. The two grow to love one another and break Colonial

law by marrying.



Native American Perspectives: History of the Nez Perce - McDougal Littell Copies: 1

The Native American Perspective offers indigenous people’s views of the arrival of Europeans on the North

American continent. Prophecies, anecdotes, memoirs and essays are among the documents presented in

five parts according to timeline in this text: Prophecy and Contact, Religion, Resistance, Destruction by

Policy and Practice, and Survival.



Sunsets of the West - Tony Johnston Copies: 1

When the Western frontier beckons, a New England man gathers his wife and three children for a

demanding journey by covered wagon. Johnston's (That Summer, reviewed Mar. 18) straightforward

narrative gives readers a generous sampling of the emotions, sights and sounds of such a trip down to the

smallest sensory details.

1621 A New Look at Thanksgiving - Catherine O’Neill Copies: 1

A considerable amount of information is packed into this pictorial presentation of the reenactment of the

first Thanksgiving, held at Plymouth Plantation museum in October, 2000. Countering the prevailing,

traditional story of the first Thanksgiving, this lushly illustrated photo-essay presents a more measured,

balanced, and historically accurate version of the three-day harvest celebration in 1621.



The American West: An Illustrated History - Liz Sonneborn Copies: 1

This attractive book looks at the American West as a physical place, with magnificent vistas and extremes

in weather, and also as an idea, a land of promise and new beginnings. It traces the different people who

inhabited or crossed through this area west of the Mississippi River to make their dreams come true-

indigenous tribes, fur trappers, miners, cattlemen, farmers, moviemakers, and suburbanites.



Crossing the Panther’s Path - Elizabeth Alder Copies: 1

A novel based on the true story of Billy Calder, Tecumseh's translator and aide during the War of 1812. The

teen is half Irish and half Mohawk, educated by the Jesuits, fluent in many languages, falling in love, and

fiercely dedicated to the cause of the Indians and the British in the war. Once initiated into his mind and

culture, readers will be walking trails, canoeing streams, riding horses, and fighting battles along with him.



The Declaration of Independence, The Words that Made America - Sam Fink Copies: 1

By dividing the text into short phrases, hand lettering the words on one page, and illustrating the ideas

expressed on the facing page, Fink succeeded marvelously in his goal. His scratchy, historically accurate

illustrations are compelling and witty in their representation of the Declaration's significance.



Gift Horse a Lakota Story - S. D. Nelson Copies: 1

A member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe imagines the boyhood of his great-great-grandfather, a Lakota

Each signer had a life before, during, and after his historical act, yet most of them are unknown. This book

might be familiar. The book is divided into 13 sections, one for each of the colonies. Each section begins

with a brief history of the colony, including its industries, population, and notable persons during the years

leading up to and during the American Revolution.

Susan La Flesche Picotte, Jim Thorpe, and William McCabe are just three of the distinguished American

Indians you will meet in this book- with re-created dramatic moments in each person's life to give a glimpse

of their incredible accomplishments. Each portrait has been thoroughly researched and is beautifully

evoked.

Mending Wall - Robert Frost Copies: 0

A metaphorical poem written in blank verse, published in 1914, The poem is set in the countryside and is

about one man questioning why he and his neighbor must rebuild the stone wall dividing their farms each

spring. It is perhaps best known for its line spoken by the neighbor: "Good fences make good neighbors." a

disdain for the expression and the walls erected between people is discussed.



The Other Side - Jacqueline Woodson Copies: 1

The central metaphor of this book is a fence that divides blacks from whites. One African-American and

one white girl, both instructed by their mothers not to climb over the fence, watch each other from a

distance, they introduce themselves and point out to each other that "a fence like this was made for sitting

on"; what was a barrier between the new friends' worlds becomes a peaceful perch where the two spend

time together throughout the summer.

Iqbal Masih and the Crusaders against Child Slavery - Susan Kuklin Copies: 1

This book discusses modern child labor in developing countries where youngsters work in carpet factories,

The 100 Greatest Heroes - H. Paul Jeffers Copies: 2

Short vignettes of 100 men and women whose heroic achievements influenced world events were

complied to create this book. Its purpose is to offer readers succinct biographical sketches. It makes no

pretense as to authoritativeness, the list reflects personal preference of the author, and provides no

rationale or justification for his rankings. It is however insightful and provides interesting facts about those

whom were chosen.



The Christmas Menorah- Janice Cohn Copies: 4

Based on a true incident that occurred in Billings, Montana, this story begins when a rock is thrown through

a boy's bedroom window in which a menorah is displayed. The boy, Isaac, is frightened and unsure

whether he wants to put the menorah back. His parents call the police, and his mother goes on television

and to a meeting to talk about hate crimes in the community. Inspired by stories of the Danish people

helping their Jewish neighbors during World War II, the people of Billings put menorahs in their windows to

Japan. Sugihara was denied permission three times by his government to issue visas, however,

disregarded orders and saved over 6,000 Jews. After the war the Sugihara family was imprisoned for a

year and a half in a Soviet internment camp in Romania. When the family returned to Japan in 1947,

Sugihara was dismissed from the diplomatic service. He died in 1986, unrecognized by Japan for his
