Egg Baby*
The purpose of this project is to allow you to experience some of the responsibilities that are
involved in the care of human "babies".
You will receive points for your parent's signature on the bottom of this form. By signing this
form, your parents are indicating that they have read it and are ready to assist you as "egg"
grandparents.
Directions for making “Egg Babies”: With a straight pin poke/drill a small hole in the smaller end of
a raw egg and a larger hole in the larger end. While making the larger hole, be sure to puncture
the egg yolk. Then, blow through the small hole to force out the raw egg. Rinse out the egg so
that your baby does not develop body odor.
You will need to have a face on the egg, and a diaper for your egg. You can use wiggle eyes, or
„hair‟ that you may purchase at Wal-Mart or Michael‟s. Your first and last name must be written
on the backside (hidden) of the egg-baby. Decorate, dress and name your egg-baby to your own
taste (Hopefully it resembles you!)
Make a carrier for your baby. You want something well padded so that your baby is safe, warm,
and comfortable. (You may not use foam rubber; it will chafe a baby‟s delicate skin). Make sure
the baby can be easily removed from the carrier for hugging, feeding, changing, and showing off
to family and friends and for daily inspection. Also, babies need lots of attention and should
never be left unattended. People go to jail for child-neglect/endangerment if their babies are left
unsupervised. Your baby should go everywhere with you. I will encourage your other teachers to
safeguard unattended babies by returning them to me--and you will lose project points for each
violation. If you must be away from your baby, you must "hire" a babysitter. You don‟t need to
pay the sitter, but you must record the sitter‟s name, and the length of time the baby was with the
sitter.
The project begins on _________________, at the beginning of AVID class and ends at the end
of AVID class, on ________________. Each day at the beginning of class there will be an "egg"
check.
This form must be with your "egg" during each check and must be kept in a neat, clean, and
unrumpled condition. This is worth points for your total.
Take good care of your baby. Your baby must always be visible in school for others to see and
appreciate. It could be psychologically damaging to your child if you were ashamed of it and did
not provide a good social experience. You will lose points if I receive teacher-reports that your
Egg-Baby was not visible in their class.
Please remember, Mr. Conrad is not an unreasonable person. (Well....at most times he is not
unreasonable!) If you run into any difficulties or problems during the course of this project, please
come and talk to him.
If you drop or crack your egg please notify Mr. Conrad as soon as possible. This does
not mean that you have failed the project. We may be able to bandage the egg.
If your egg is damaged beyond repair the Alternative Assignment is as follows: An
obituary for your egg baby. The obituary should always include the loved one‟s date and
place of death, including the year, and where funeral services will be held. You also are
to include, requests for memorial donations, the birth date and place, parents‟ names,
any other personal information, list of survivors and pallbearers. Then write a one page
paper on dealing with the loss of a child.
If someone who is in the class damages your egg or you damage your egg on purpose,
you will both receive an F for the project. If you have questions, please ask. You must
bring your baby to class with you everyday! No exceptions.
Journal: A Day in the life of (insert baby‟s name)
You must complete a one-day-only baby journal. Make chronological entries (include
times) for each time you do any of the following activities with your baby on this “typical”
day:
Each time you feed the baby (list what you fed it), and estimated cost.
Each time you change diapers or give baby a bath, and estimated cost.
The time you used a sitter, and estimated cost.
Each time you socialize/play with or entertain the baby (Specify what you did). Your
journal will be graded on how realistically/satisfactorily/lovingly etc. you took care of Egg-
Baby.
Egg Baby: What did I Learn from Caring for Mine?
You should answer the following questions at the end of the project:
How did it feel to have to watch this kid?
As a single teenager with a baby how your social life would be affected?
How has this experience affected the way you think about teen parenthood?
