Countries
(Oct. 26 ~Nov. 15, 2009)
Seminar on Non-timber Forest Products (Bamboo) Development for Officials from
Developing Countries is sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), P. R.
China and hosted by China National Bamboo Research Center (CBRC).
Bamboo is the globally largest and key Non-timber Forest Product for its being
rapid-growth, short-cycle, versatile, renewable, especially a harmonious value cluster in
soci-economy and ecology and reputed well as “Timber for The Poor”. China, known
as a "Bamboo Kingdom", is not only the biggest country of bamboo resources, but also
has art-of-the-state technology, sustainable management, and rich experience in
bamboo resources utilization, or in an internationally advanced position in many areas
of bamboo. Through 40 years’ painstaking efforts, China has acchieved tremendously in
bamboo plantation management and integrated processing and utilization on an
industrialization and commercial scale, and is playing very active and important roles in
poverty alleviation for well-being, women employment, forestry products supply,
ecological environment improvement. At present, China’s bamboo sector is growing
into a booming and sun rising industry streamlined from cultivation, integrated
processing into export, and becoming a pillar of the agricultural economy. Its total
production value in China in 2007 is over US$ 8.5 billion, in which 1.1 US$ billion
from export value. It is believed that bamboo plays an incredible role in improving
globally sustainable forest development and maximizing its value of soci-economy and
ecology.
Headquartered in Hangzhou, a picturesque city and one of China's most famous
and dynamic bamboo areas, CBRC was established in 1988 by the State
Administration of Forestry (SAF). It has 3 Missions as enshrined by the Ministry of
Science and Technology, and SAF: (a) Bamboo R.&D.internationally and domestically;
(b) International bamboo training and cooperation; and (c) Bamboo industrialization.
CBRC’s headquarter---China Bamboo Plaza has 20,000 ㎡ and is equipped with labs
for bamboo processing, cultivation and bio-tech., 4-star international training/
conference and accomodation facilities. CBRC has 2 own field bamboo experiment
Stations/Bases: for Bamboo High-yield Cultivation and Hi-tech Processing respectively.
Over 40 training spots all around China set up. Now CBRC carries out the bamboo R.
& D. projects funded by the state, ministerial, provincial levels and by enterprises,
therefore it greatly contributes to the growth of China’s bamboo sector. CBRC also
conducts widely international R. & D. on bamboo with over 30 countries as Rwanda,
Uganda, Ghana, India, Viet Nam, Australia, Japan, the U.S.A, Germany etc., which has
greatly promoted the bamboo industry development in these countries.
In order to disseminate bamboo technologies, CBRC has already held with great
success 27 training courses/workshops entrusted by the MOFCOM, P. R. China, United
Nations Development Program (UNDP) etc. So far, around 900 participants from nearly
90 countries have been well trained and played an important role in their bamboo
development.
In this context, the Chinese Government (MOFCOM) entrusts CBRC to host
