Diet For Gout That Works

Gout is a form of arthritis that causes severe

pain and swelling of the affected joint.

Gout is caused by a condition called

hyperuricemia, which is the abnormal

increase in the uric acid levels in the blood.

The pain and swelling are caused by the

accumulation of urate crystals which are

formed out of uric acid in the blood.

They leave the bloodstream and get deposited

in the soft tissues that surround the joints.

The body reacts with severe inflammation

and pain – a gout attack.

Usually gout attacks one joint at a time,

but in more serious cases it can attack

multiple joints at the same time.

The best way to control the attacks is to

adjust your diet for gout.

This will give excellent results.

There are many forms of treatment

for gout, but controlling gout through diet

is the most natural way of bringing gout

attacks under control.

The diet for gout itself should not be thought

of as a treatment for gout. It is only a way of

helping avoid future gout attacks.

A diet for gout has to be planned such

that the food items you include produce

very little uric acid.

Uric acid is the waste product of our

metabolic processes breaking down purines.

So, the uric acid diet dictates that you

must avoid eating purines, or limit their

intake as much as possible.

Some examples of foods high in purines

are anchovies, organ meats, asparagus,

herring, and mushrooms.

So these foods must be reduced or

avoided in your diet.

A beneficial diet for gout also aims at

reducing your body weight gradually.

Obese people are far more likely to be

prone to gout attacks.

Drinking a lot of fluid, but avoiding alcohol,

also assists in bringing down the uric acid

levels in your blood.

If you want to strictly adhere to a diet for gout,

then you must avoid taking animal protein

especially organ meats, red meat, fatty fish and

seafood, as these are rich in purines.

Instead choose more plant-based proteins,

although some legumes can be high in purines.

This also helps in another way by reducing the

intake of saturated fats that cause weight gain

and likelihood of gout attack.

Alcohol is not good for your gout and

consumption of alcohol during a gout attack

must be completely avoided.

Even when you are not having an attack,

it is important to lower your intake

as much as possible.

Especially avoid drinking a lot of beer,

as beer has a higher purine content.

Fluids and water must be added in to

your diet for gout, and a daily intake of

more than three liters of water and other

fluids is very beneficial to your health.

While dairy products are good for gout,

choose those that are low in fat as they are

found to considerably reduce the risk of gout.

Avoid taking food items made out of

refined carbohydrates like white bread,

candy and cakes and instead take foods

made of whole grains, fruits and vegetables

that help you to lower your uric acid level.

Diet is a very important factor when

it comes to gout.

When a good diet for gout is followed,

along with a healthy lifestyle, then your gout

can be easily brought under control.
