Early Childhood Life
• First swim lesson he had a fit because he
did not want to get face wet
• After many lessons he got better
• 1992 parents divorced
Middle Childhood/Early Adult
• In 1996 Michael joined NBAC
• His new coach became Bob Bowman
• Began training 10 times a week
• Went to 2003 Duel in the Pool and did
very well
• Went to 2004 Athens Olympics and got 6
gold medals and 2 bronze
Family Life
• Michael lives with mom Debbie
• Also lives with sisters Hilary and Whitney
• Parents divorced in 1992
Obstacles They Had to
Overcome
• Went to Olympics when only 15
• After parents divorced he had to get used
to living with only mom
• First time swimming was very hard
• Rival was Ian Thorpe
(retired)
Accomplishments and Awards
• Youngest swimmer to be in Olympics
• Holds many records such as 200 meter
butterfly
• In 1999 made U.S. National B Team
• 2004 Olympics won 6 gold medals and 2
bronze

• I look up to him
• I would like to a great swimmer like him
• He always works hard and I would like to
work just that hard
