I. COURSE NAME: YEARBOOK
Grade Level: Grades10-12 (9th grade with prior approval of advisor)
Prerequisite: Word Processing 1 and 2, or Web Design,
or Multimedia Design or Journalism 1 and/or 2
and prior approval of yearbook advisor.
Duration: One year (2 Semesters)
Two periods (students can take 1 or 2 period block)
Credit: Elective (10 credits per period)
Date: July, 2007
II. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Yearbook is a two period block course, combining high-level critical thinking, artistic,
creative and aesthetic skills of visual and graphic arts, and editing and writing skills. Students
learn basic photography and use of digital media; practice basics of design and layout; analyze
and evaluate images based on a set of given values; learn management skills and teamwork;
use state-of-the-art word processing and design software; learn basic marketing and
advertising skills; interact with the community; write and edit common forms of journalistic
stories; and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ethical responsibilities and
communications law. This course will sharpen students’ thinking and expression, widen their
experience with people and communication, provide an environment for self-directed learning
and give them confidence in their ability to see their creative ideas to completion.
Yearbook is designed to provide students with an understanding and appreciation of the
various aspects of producing a yearbook as well as the marketing techniques required in
selling a yearbook. Emphasis includes photography, computer layout and design, time
management and team organization, marketing, advertising and sales, journalistic writing,
interviewing, and meeting deadlines.

FIRST SEMESTER
Outline of Content:
Students will meet the first week of school and discuss the requirements necessary to be a part of yearbook. Students
will be required to sign a contract and also to have parents read and sign the contract stating the requirements and
extra-curricular time that is necessary to be a part of the yearbook course. Emphasis of this course is placed on
extension of previous skills learned in the pre-requisite courses. Instructional units are not linear in nature, but often
recursive as needed.

SECOND SEMESTER
