Portfolio Implementation Process – Fall 2004

Acknowledging that candidates are at various stages of their programs, the portfolio
implementation process for Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Teacher Certification
for College Graduates (TCCG) candidates will begin in Fall 2004. To fairly bring
everyone up to date, the following guideline and deadlines must be met according to each
candidate’s stage in the program. Candidates should work with their advisors and course
faculty both present and past to bring their portfolios up to date in order to meet all
benchmark deadlines. On the pages that follow are specific instructions for completing
sections of the portfolio.

Submitting and gaining approval for sections of the portfolio in a timely manner is
the responsibility of each candidate. In completing this process, keep in mind that last
minute submissions may delay approval for clinical practice if not clinical practice itself.
Therefore, allow time for faculty to read sections and sign off on the form; do not ask
faculty to read and approve sections at the last minute. If a course was taught by an
adjunct, use the syllabus for that course to contact that adjunct to obtain approvals and sign
offs. If you have trouble contacting adjunct faculty, contact your advisor who will assist
you.

As you read the following pages, determine at which stage you are in the
certification process and follow those guidelines and deadlines. New candidates should
talk with their advisors about this process and how to proceed.

NOTE: In submitting sections for faculty approval, each candidate is responsible for
providing the section to be considered, and the cover sheet following the designated
format. If all components are not provided, faculty will not consider the submission
for approval.

                                                                                             1

       GUIDELINES FOR MEETING PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

As part of program completion, all candidates are required to complete a program portfolio
that demonstrates their current knowledge and skills in the art and science of teaching at the time
each section is submitted for acceptance. Candidates are responsible for submitting
portions of their portfolio to their advisor or designated reviewer at prescribed stages of their
program. Through acceptance of each portfolio submission, candidates will pass benchmarks
required for completing teacher certification.

                                            Benchmarks

First Benchmark: Upon Completion of the Third (3 rd) Course

To pass the first benchmark, candidates must have submitted and had accepted four
sections of their portfolio. These sections are: IPT Standards: 1, 2, 3, and 11.

Second Benchmark: At the Time of Application for Clinical Practice

To pass the second benchmark, at the time of application for clinical practice, candidates
must have submitted and had accepted four additional sections of their portfolio. These
sections are: IPT Standards: 4, 8, 9, and 10. The portfolio with eight (8) approved
standards - 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11, is submitted at the time of application for clinical practice.
The portfolio and its contents will be used as part of the process for determining
qualifications for clinical practice placement.

Third Benchmark: During Clinical Practice Seminar

To pass the third benchmark, during their clinical practice seminar, candidates will
submit and have accepted IPT Standards 5, 6, and 7. Candidates will also submit and have
accepted their Resume, updated Professional Philosophy Statement, and Professional
Development Plan. During this seminar, the entire portfolio will also be submitted to
demonstrate that all benchmarks have been passed. The seminar instructor will provide
candidates with specific information and directions for completing their individual
portfolios.

A sample cover page is provided to guide candidates as they prepare each section of their
portfolio. The cover page is available at domin.dom.edu. At the end of this guide, a copy of
the Illinois standards applicable to all teachers is provided.

              PORTFOLIO IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS FOR
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM*

*(For candidates seeking their initial teaching certificate.)

Completion of a portfolio based on the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards has
been a requirement of the Clinical Practice Seminar for a number of years. At this point in
time, we are in a stage of changing the way a portfolio is completed. Instead of having
candidates complete the whole portfolio during the semester of their clinical practice, we
are moving to candidates completing the portfolio across their total program.

The guidelines for building one’s portfolio across the program follow on the next
pages. It calls for candidates to gather artifacts and complete cover sheets and reflections
addressing most of the standards prior to their clinical practice.

In recognition that current students are at various points in their program, the initial
transition to this new portfolio building process for the Master of Science in Special
Education Program will begin in Spring 2005. A modified timeline for gathering artifacts
and building the portfolio has been developed. It will be administered to all students
currently in the program and will be distributed at meetings to be held in Spring 2005.
Therefore, students planning to do their clinical practice (student teaching) in Fall 2005 and
Spring 2006 will receive a modified timeline for gathering artifacts. Students who are
planning to do their clinical practice (student teaching) in Spring 2005 will complete their
portfolio following the previous process (during their Clinical Practice seminar).

All students currently enrolled in coursework will receive notice of meetings to be
held in Spring 2005 (on each campus) to discuss the portfolio, each candidate will need to
attend one of these two meetings or directly contact an advisor indicating inability to attend
so that alternate plans may be made for you to receive this important information. At this
meeting the portfolio process, explanation of the process for obtaining artifacts, completion
of cover sheets, and the portfolio implementation timeline for the Master of Science in
Special Education Program will be addressed.

All new students in the Master of Science in Special Education Program will be
required to attend one meeting at the beginning of their program at Dominican University.

         GUIDELINES FOR MEETING PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS*

          GUIDELINES FOR MEETING PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

As part of program completion, all candidates are required to complete a program
portfolio that demonstrates their current knowledge and skills in the art and science of
teaching at the time each section is submitted for acceptance. Candidates are responsible
for submitting portions of their portfolio to their advisor or designated reviewer at
prescribed stages of their program. Through acceptance of each portfolio submission,
candidates will pass benchmarks required for completing teacher certification.

                                        Benchmarks

First Benchmark: Upon Completion of the Third (3rd) Course

To pass the first benchmark, candidates must have submitted and had accepted four
sections of their portfolio. These sections are: IPT Standards: 1, 2, 3 and 11.

Second Benchmark: At the time of Application for Clinical Practice

To pass the second benchmark, at the time of application for clinical practice,
candidates must have submitted and had accepted four additional sections of their portfolio.
These sections are: IPT Standards: 4, 8, 9 and 10. The portfolio with eight (8) approved
standards – 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11 (including the integration of Core Technology, Core
Language Arts, and Special Needs), is submitted at the time of application for clinical
practice. The portfolio and its contents will be used as part of the process for determining
qualifications for clinical practice placement.

Third Benchmark: During Clinical Practice Seminar

To pass the third benchmark, during their clinical practice seminar, candidates will
submit and have accepted IPT Standards 5, 6 and 7. Candidates will also submit and have
accepted their Resume, updated Professional Philosophy Statement, and Professional
Development Plan. During this seminar, the entire portfolio will also be submitted to
demonstrate that all benchmarks have been passed. The seminar instructor will provide
candidates with specific information and directions for completing their individual
portfolios.

A sample cover page is provided to guide candidates as they prepare each section of
their portfolio. The cover page is available at domin.dom.edu. At the end of this guide, a
copy of the Illinois standards applicable to all teachers is provided.

 Conceptual Framework: Scholarship

Reflection:

In order to demonstrate my ability to understand major concepts, assumptions, debates,

principles, theories, and the process of inquiry central to the study of history, a sample of a twenty-

page term paper about the Papal Schism of 1130, the appropriate endnotes, and the bibliography

are included. Research is the basis of all historical study, and students should learn how to gather

and analyze historical evidence to compare differing viewpoints to form conclusions. This

excerpt shows how I can effectively research a historical topic and draw conclusions based upon

a variety of sources and points of view. In my administration I plan to share with teachers the

same research and writing techniques so that student research will be fair, balanced, and

reliable. As a result the students will learn about topics in more depth, and, more importantly,

                                                                                                       27
they will learn how to approach historical problems in a systematic, rational manner.

Students will also learn that this form of problem solving is a life-long skill that they can

  apply to all situations.
