SOCIAL PROGRAM
Valencia is proud to have a rich Artistic and Historical Heritage, which ensures
tourists to enjoy their stay in the City. Among the many possibilities for a social
program for delegates and accompanying persons, the following ones can be
recommended:
1. Stroll around the History. The history of the
city of Valencia is both rich and varied,
providing one of the most important heritages in
the Mediterranean. We suggest you to discover
our historical treasures zigzagging around the
old narrow streets of our City center.
2. Discover the main Valencian
Festival. Our most famous
festivity is the Fallas (12-19 of
March), monumental works of art,
mainly consisting of cardboard,
clay and plaster, some of which
are over 30 metres tall. The
inspiration for the themes is found in criticising social situation in a humorous
way, by means of figures and caricature compositions ironising well-known
public persons. The Fallas are put up in the streets to be burnt down the “Night
of fire”, which is celebrated on 19th.
The creativity is shown not only in the artistic monuments, but also in the music
of marching bands, the fireworks (Valencian fireworks are probably the best in
the world) and the colourful display of local costumes. All together contribute to
make a visit to ‘Valencia in Fallas’ an unforgettable experience.
Delegates and accompanying persons can discover the Fallas all the year
around at the "Museo Fallero". A display of the funniest figures can be admired
together with posters, pictures and other objects connected with the festival.

3. Get into the TRAM... till the maritime
district, where you can have lunch in a
typical restaurant at the seaside; and
after a good meal, nothing better than a
charming walk around the maritime
promenade. Dare to embark in "La
Golondrina" for a delicious and relaxing
mini-cruise around the harbour to the
lighthouse.
4. Time for real shopping? Sure. We propose you to visit the most prestigious
Spanish ceramic and porcelain makers. Moreover, the city is a main venue for
Spanish fashion.
5. Get into the swing... at the golf course of El Saler
with its 18 holes on the seaside between the pine-
trees. It is included among the world's top 50 for its
quality. Or try in any of the other 3 golf courses in
Valencia.
6. An excursion... to Peñiscola, at only one hour's
drive, a village of golden sandy beaches against a
blue sky with an interesting historical past well
shown by its mediaeval castle -perfectly preserved.
There, the sea offers its best delicious fruits, such as lobster, shrimps and
seafood that visitors often enjoy combined with land wines.
7. Enjoy the nature! At hardly dozen
kilometres distance from the city we reach
La Albufera, the largest lake of the
Spanish peninsula, as well as a nature
park of extraordinary ecological
importance, which is cut off from the sea
by a strip of land where a pine forest
grows on sandy dunes.
We recommend you a boat trip along this
wonderful lagoon at the sunset time, abandoning oneself at the sight of the red
and golden hues disappearing into the night.
The game that sun plays at dusk with the water at making picture postcards will
be an experience to be long remembered.
19
Agricultural Engineering Congress Valencia 2012
8. A cultural leisure. Valencia’s array of
cultural activities is enormous. There are
cultural activities for all tastes. Just two
examples: In music field, regular concerts
are scheduled at the ‘Palau de la Musica'.
Every year more than 200 concerts are
held there and the best opera singers and
soloists and orchestras have performed
on its stage.
The Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) has reached a top European level
in only a few years thanks to the high standard of its exhibition and the
importance of its permanent collection.
9. For history lovers... we propose a visit to the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria
del Puig -a building dating back to the XIII century- and visiting the Roman
Theatre in Sagunto -a remarkable construction of the II century which has been
recently rebuilt- and the Jewish Quarter which should be visited on foot, walking
along the steps and their narrow and picturesque streets.
10. Enjoy your meal! The rich gastronomy is one of the other pleasant surprises, which await
tourists. Rice dishes are the dominant of Valencian
cooking: they can be dry, sweetish, soupy, covered
with eggs, vegetarian, with fish, with meat... we
advice to try at least the half dozen classic ones.
Unquestionably, the paella is the true protagonist
and the best internationally known Spanish dish. In
here, the visitor will be in position to judge the
difference between the paella made in Valencia and
that which goes by the name of paella in other parts
of the world.
20
Agricultural Engineering Congress Valencia 2012
11. Discover an amazing cultural project in Europe: the City of Arts & Sciences.
This complex, developed by Santiago Calatrava with an unquestionable beauty,
is a large-scale urban recreation center for culture and science which also
incorporates L’Oceanogràfic, an underwater city designed by the late Felix
Candela.
Set in the old dried-up river bed of the Turia, midway between the old city of
Valencia and the coastal district of Nazaret, the City of Arts and Sciences covers
an area of 350,000 square metres.
L'Hemisféric shows IMAX movies, Planetarium and a
laser spectacle.
Príncipe Felipe Sciences Museum was designed by
Santiago Calatrava. It takes you back to the evolution
of life and it provides you the latest news in Science
and Technology.
Oceanographic Park is a genuine submarine city with
80,000 square metres, where you can travel and dive
into the different habitats of our planet. Crystal tunnels
will help us to get to know all the marine animals on
the planet: sharks, walrus, turtles, etc. Visit the
underwater restaurant, enjoy the cybernetic fountain
for the light spectacle with sounds and water. Hold
your breath while visiting the biggest Aquarium in Europe, entertaining you with a show with
dolphins and killer whales.
