"Twenty five seedlings of Metasequoia
glyptostroboides were planted at the
Bent Creek Experimental Forest in 1950. These
seedlings were provided by
Mr. Ralph W. Chaney, of the Museum of
Paleontology, Berkeley, Calif. The
seeds were collected in western Humpeh,
central China in 1948. At the end
of three growing seasons, 20 seedlings have
survived and have an average
height of 1.4 feet with a maximum of 2.8 feet."

Measurements taken in 1997 by John Kuser of
Rutgers. At least 41 total trees on campus.
Prospect Park tree is solitary, while Broadmead
trees are more bunched. 8 feet of height and 3
inches of DBH added by Matthew Belsky to
each tree. This is a conservative approximation
of growth since 1997.
Measurements taken in 2005 by Matthew
Belsky. Total of 34 trees measured. Total of
47 trees on Arboretum grounds.
"Trees are growing in somewhat acidic soils
(avg pH 5.4) that are sandy loam. USDA
hardiness zone 5. All of the above are growing
next to ponds. We have never seen any
seedlings establishing near the trees, but viable
seed has been collected, and germinated, from
some of them."
DBH and Heights measured 6/15/2005
First one is growing in full sun, second in a
wooded area. Second tree obtained from
former employee of US National Arboretum and
is growing near wooded area.
Through National Central University from
Arnold Arboretum. Seeds received
12/26/1947, seeds sown January 1948. Moved
to present locations in 1952.
The Gotelli Pond tree, 'National' is an
Arboretum introduction from the wild collected
seed.. "It appears that 'National' was selected
out from the NA#10920 seed batch, and
officially introduced into the nursery trade April
15, 1963."

"The site on which the combined group stands
is rather dry. This may explain why trees of a
similar age at the Morris Arboretum are of
greater dimension. During the past two years,
irrigation has been added to this site which
should relieve some of the summer drought
stress that has periodically occurred. For some
of the plants we have height and DBH data
from 2000 and 2002 indicating a considerable
rate of growth on some individuals."
Oldest tree: 1951 – 4’ tall; 1963 - 30 - 40' tall;
1968 - 58' tall, 26.1 DBH, 25' spread; 1981 -
70+' tall, and 40.1 DBH; 1997 – 91 feet tall,

Total of 41 Metasequoias at site
In addition, there are trees on the Berkeley
central campus, at least two, possibly as many
as four. They, too, originated with Dr. Chaney.
Data obtained through Boyce Tankersley.
Total of 38 plants were planted, 5 remain.
"First specimen at the Arboretum of The Barnes

"We have four Metasequoia glyptostroboides
across the front of the Conservatory. Two of
them were relocated away from the existing
entrance in order to make room for our new
welcome center in the fall of 2003. They now
flank the entrance to our Outdoor Garden.
They survived the move with little trauma."
"Brought by Dr. William Chambers Coker,
botanist at UNC-CH."

Growing on moist hill seep. 55 ft wide and has
grown 4-5 ft per year
Grant Nursery received seeds from Arnold
Arboretum in 1949. 41 Metasequoias planted
between 1951 and 1964. Only 11 remained by
1968. Between 5 and 10 remain alive at this
time. Most deaths were recorded as
"winterkill". 5 known living specimens are
growing in semi-shady locations. It has been
noted that particularly fast growing trees are
more susceptible to winter injury and winterkill.
Tallest Metasequoias in Ohio
Planted on Arbor Day
Total of 26 Metasequoias at site.
Data collected by Susan Yost of Delaware State
University
Three plants were received in 1950 from Mr.
James Clark of Princeton University. He had
received a number of seedlings from Arnold
Arboretum via their original collection in China
in 1948. Their original height at that time was
about 3 feet. All three are living. No seedlings
have been observed.
Five plants were received in 1972. Two have
since died. Source is unknown. All were planted
along a stream bed that goes dry during
periods of no rain.
"We have 6 trees of Metasequoia
glyptostroboides. 5 are from the seed originally
distributed by the Arnold Arboretum, received
by us 1/26/48, said to be from a “tree 120 ft.
tall, slopes of Mt. in Szechuan, 3000 ft., 1947”.
Their accession number, current measurements

Dear [NAMES]:
My name is Matthew Belsky, and I am a Senior at Skidmore College, the graduating class of 2006. I have an
enthusiastic interest in computer cartography (GIS). Not only am I employed by Lower Merion Township near
Philadelphia as a GIS Intern Analyst, but I am undertaking an Independent Study with two Professors, a GIS
professor and an Art professor. The Art professor is building an interactive multi-media project at the Morris
Arboretum in Philadelphia entitled 'Meta-Metasequoia'. The Morris Arboretum is the Official Arboretum of the
State of Pennsylvania, and University of Penn's Arboretum.
My project involves much networking and research efforts in an with the goal of locating as many publicly or
institutionally owned Metasequoias (Dawn Redwoods) as possible throughout the United States. That is why I am
contacting you today. My ultimate goal is a series of maps that details growing conditions, seed spread, speed of
tree growth, and additional trends. It will be an invaluable resource for those interested in a variety of fields.
I have been informed that there are Metasequoias at where you work. I am compiling a database of
Metasequoias planted before 1975, with specific information that I am seeking.
This information is:
1) Quantity of trees
2) Planting date (Only before 1975)
3) Height
4) DBH
5) Seed source
Any other information that you would like to provide would be greatly appreciated. Accuracy is very important, but
if you could take a brief moment to compile this information for me, even if it is only a very educated guess, I
would be very thankful. Naturally. the more accurate the data the better..
Of course if you have any leads on the location of additional Metasequoias I would love to hear of that.
Hopefully these maps will be of great aide to those interested in the Metasequoia. I look forward to hearing from
you.
The Meta is the Official State Fossil of Oregon
A result of the fact that the US metaseuoias are the result of one introduction is that they all have a trunk that
flares at the base. When I was in the Botanical Gardens in Georgia (ex USSR) they showed me their
