CDC EXPLORES WITH MARCO POLO TO REACH STUDENTS What do Disney, Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, and the University of Cincinnati have in common? Marco Polo Explorers! This organization, founded by Mr. Marc Marsan, fosters creative approaches to marketing and has worked with all of these to improve their marketing. Marc has been featured on "The View," "Montel Williams," and "MTV." He is the author of "Who are You When Nobody is Looking," and "Think Naked," which will be in bookstores this month. CDC's own Feryal Khan conducted research for this book and made the connection between CDC and this unique marketing company. In an extremely informal setting, a pro-bono two-hour session helped CDC brainstorm new ideas to market our services to UC students. We began our exploration with an ice-breaker, and quickly journeyed to highlight companies that are experts in communicating their messages. Marc asked us to identify what can be learned from other successful marketing campaigns and emphasized the importance of stepping outside of our comfort zone--comparing CDC with corporate entities instead of other universities. Marc emphasized the importance of developing our "high concept"-- our mantra, visceral, or texture. He asked us to define the heart and soul of our department. The majority of us agreed that the heart & soul of CDC is to help students become the most marketable product for the employer. Part of that work is to welcome the best employers to campus and to be their first point of contact. Benefits for employers include visibility to students and access to the best student candidates. Our successful session has already resulted in "Get a Job Day," a well-attended job search event. CDC continues to develop new ideas for more effective marketing. CDC has learned to "think outside the box," thanks to Marc Marsan and the "Explorers." SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE VISITS CDC'S NEW HOME IN UNIVERSITY PAVILION On Wednesday, February 19th, CDC welcomed six Student Services Representatives from Sinclair Community College for a tour of CDC's new facility in University Pavilion. Dr. Thomas Hadley, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Services, officially welcomed the group. Mr. Stanley Henderson, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management gave a most impressive and informative tour of the building. At the completion of their tour, the group met with Dr. Mitchel Livingston, Vice President of Student Affairs. He provided information on the One-Stop concept and how the University Pavilion helps UC provide better service to students. Led by former CDC Associate Director Katrina Jordan who currently serves as Director of Sinclair's Career Center, our visitors were very impressed with our new facility. CDC welcomes visitor tours of the new facility! If you are interested in a tour, please contact the CDC receptionist at (513) 556-3471. THE ADVANCE PROGRAM TRAVELS TO THE BIG APPLE The ADVANCE Program, a University of Cincinnati student organization geared toward the professional development of African American students, travels to New York City for its annual Spring Break Corporate Excursion on March 22, 2003. Included in this year's itinerary are visits to AT&T, JP Morgan Chase, Federated Department Stores, Key Span Energy, CBS & CNN. During last year's excursion to Chicago, ADVANCE students visited Sara Lee Corporation, Sears, Chubb Insurance, Diner's Club, Citibank & Kraft Foods. ADVANCE was developed in 1986 with the purpose of preparing minority college students for employability, retention, and promotion within the workforce. Through its unique organizational structure, ADVANCE members network with diverse corporate cultures and develop their professionalism through activities such as the Corporate Excursion and the annual ADVANCE Networking Reception. ADVANCE activities also provide students with opportunities to learn about current hiring trends and changes within various corporate environments. If you would like to support the ADVANCE Corporate Excursion or other ADVANCE functions, please contact Arthur Walton at 556-0316 or waltonab@email.uc.edu. CDC PRESENTS "GET A JOB DAY!"
