Bookkeeping-Accountancy
The certificate of Bookkeeping-Accountancy is designed for paraprofessionals who require certification for job advancement, to members of the work force who require job retraining, to nontraditional learners with an interest in accountancy and to matriculated students who want to enrich their traditional collegiate experience with additional skills.

Employment opportunities
The Department of Labor estimates that accounting and bookkeeping professionals represent one of the largest professional groups with more than 2.1 million jobs in 2006. Based on current available reports, the outlook for jobs in this profession full and part-time employment is expected to grow at a rate comparable with the national average. Those with some certification and or bookkeeping-accountancy experience will be in greatest demand.
Course content
This online program consists of four, three credit courses. The first three courses in the program (Fundamentals of Bookkeeping-Accountancy I-III) are required for all students. The fourth course in the program is one of three electives offered; allowing the student the opportunity to focus the certificate in an area of their interest.

The course requirements for the program will be delivered completely online allowing students to complete the program from anywhere in the world. Course content will include custom designed materials and a variety of self-help learning aids including video lectures, podcasts, self-testing materials and distance learning tutorial services. All testing will be done online. Office hours will be provided through the use of a Virtual Office Hours program. The Virtual Office Hours program will allow students to communicate with the professor directly using a text chat module. The professor will be able to answer the student live with audio and video. Students will also be in contact with the professor via e-mail communication.

Required Courses
Fundamentals of Bookkeeping-Accountancy I (32-ACCT-091*) An introduction to the theory and principles of basic bookkeeping and contemporary accountancy. Students will learn how to collect, record, and present basic financial data. Candidates with five or more years of bookkeeping-accountancy experience may petition to waive this course through an online examination. Fundamentals of Bookkeeping-Accountancy II (32-ACCT-092*) An examination of advanced transactions in bookkeeping-accountancy. Students will explore bookkeeping-accountancy standards for assets, liabilities and equities. Preq. 32-ACCT-091 Fundamentals of Bookkeeping-Accountancy III (32-ACCT-093*) An examination of specialized transaction in bookkeeping-accountancy. Students will explore the corporate accounts and fundamentals of statement preparation. Preq. 32-ACCT-092 Elective Courses (choose one) Fundamentals of Managerial Accounting (32-ACCT-094*) An examination of introductory topics in Managerial Accounting. Coverage will include contemporary issues in the application of bookkeeping-accountancy to the use and interpretation of data for managerial efficiency. Preq.32-ACCT-093 Fundamental Financial Statement Analysis (32-ACCT-095*) An introduction to basic financial statement analysis. Students will prepare a formal analysis of a company using contemporary analytical standards. Preq.32-ACCT-093 Fundamentals of Desktop Computer Accounting (32-ACCT-096*) The use of contemporary accounting software designed for desktop computers. Students will complete all transactions of the bookkeeping-accountancy cycle with proprietary bookkeeping-accountancy programs. Preq. 32-ACCT-093

About the instructor
Sanford Kahn
Dr. Sanford Kahn, Professor of Accounting, created and implemented the University’s first online accounting courses. Dr. Kahn has continued to expand and enhance the content and delivery methods of online accounting education at UC. He has an in-depth familiarity with a variety of content delivery systems and is a reviewer of distance learning materials for major publishing houses.
