This program explores how bones and muscles give us shape, motion, and protection. Slim
Goodbody identifies the composition of bones and different types of bone. He examines the
role of voluntary, involuntary, and cardiac muscles, and shows how muscle cells work
together. We learn the difference between ligaments and tendons, and how exercise is an
important way to keep muscles healthy.

movement for the body. Students will enjoy learning about the interdependence of these
systems and the ways to maintain healthy bones and muscles.

Additional Discovery Education Streaming Videos:
Body Systems (12min) (watch Nervous System and Musculoskeletal Systems only)
Explore the mechanisms that power the body to gurgle, burp, gasp, and giggle. Human body
systems work in harmony to connect us with the outer world, while keeping our inner world
attuned to the rhythmic beat of life.

Life Science: Human Biology (3min) (watch bones and muscular system only)
The human body is an amazing thing: separate systems carrying out different functions are
connected seamlessly into a perfectly working whole. Closer looks at the body’s muscles and
bones, endocrine system, and the five senses reveal how the various body systems are
integrated. Seeing how the body prepares for a 100-meter race shows how all the body
systems come together to perform for a splendid 10 seconds.

Human Body Systems: The Skeletal and Muscular Systems (24min)
People are able to do things like walk, run, exercise, and play sports because of the
interaction of the skeletal and muscular systems. The human body contains 206 bones and
over 600 muscles. This video describes the structure and function of the skeletal and
muscular systems and explains how they work together.

Our Flexible Frames: The Skeletal and Muscular Systems (22min)
Using graphics and images of people doing karate, lifting weights, painting, and performing
other everyday activities, this program illustrates the roles of the skeletal and muscular
systems and how they interact. It discusses how the skeletal system develops over the
human life cycle, and the impact of exercise on human muscles.

Human Body Systems: The Nervous System (27min)
It is the job of the nervous system to control and monitor all body activities. It determines
how to move and coordinate our muscles and, at the same time, controls the heart beat,
breathing rate, and interprets information about conditions around us. Just the act of
juggling requires complicated calculation about distance, altitude, arch, speed, and timing.

The Brian and Spinal Cord (15min)

                               Human Body- 5th grade 9
    * All pictures and graphics are from Microsoft ClipArt, unless otherwise noted. *
All animals act in response to stimuli; that action is controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and
nerves. In vivid support of Biology and Life Science units on the nervous system, this
program employs diagrams, live action, and microphotography to examine the functioning of
animals' nervous systems. Animation and cross-section models illustrate parts of the nerve
cells and the brain, while- in a series of laboratory experiments--a monkey's memory is
tested to demonstrate how the cerebrum works.

Real World Science: Skeletal and Muscular Systems (15min)
Real World Science: The Skeletal & Muscular Systems explores the characteristics and
functions of the bones and joints in the human skeletal system. Also examined are the
muscles, tendons and ligaments that work in conjunction with the skeletal system to provide
movement for the body. Students will enjoy learning about the interdependence of these
systems and the ways to maintain healthy bones and muscles.
