first and second year college students interested in
medicine and dentistry. This program follows up the former
MMEP and SMEP programs.
Hosted at 12 institutions across the nation, the program
aims to assist students who represent economic,
geographic, cultural, racial and ethnic diversity in their
pursuit of gaining admission to both medical and dental

Participant Prospective on
SMDEP at CUMC
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
When I did MMEP in 2003, I felt that one of the
greatest things that I got out of my experience was
the increased exposure to the dental field, and the
connections I was able to make with other dental
students and faculty and I utilized them as mentors.
I know then that I wanted to one day get the
opportunity to become an TA/RA for the program,
and reach back and help others to succeed just like
my TA/RA and mentors did for me. To whom much
is given, much is expected, and I enjoyed being
their resource answering their questions ranging
from what there was to do on weekends, in New
York to their questions on application process and
to the life of a dental student.
---Robert Mensah, SDOS Class of 2007
2003 MMEP Dental Participant, 2005 SMEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Words can’t express how much I appreciated
and benefited by my time as a student, MMEP
2003, and as a TA/RA in 2005. As a
participant I became motivated and driven to
continue to my pursuit of medicine in order to
become an advocate for individuals who are
victims of healthcare disparities. As a TA/RA I
received the benefit of interacting with eager
and motivated students in order to continue to
lessen the gap in healthcare disparities. It has
been a pleasure as well as a humbling
experience to work with students who are
immensely inquisitive about science and the
politics of healthcare. Hopefully, I will take this
experience the optimism and compassion that
these students possess throughout their daily
lives and throughout their path to becoming a
physician.
---Marisol Pichardo, P&S Class of 2008
2003 MMEP Participant, 2005 SMEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Being an RA for SMEP, after participating as a
student two years ago, was a wonderful
experience. It was very satisfying to pass on
my experiences and knowledge to help
students stay motivated to pursue their
dreams of medical school. The students
challenged me in creative ways and reminded
me how important it is to reach back and help
others to achieve. I am very grateful that I
was able to both benefit from and contribute
to this very successful and very worthwhile
endeavor.
---Kemi Oni, P&S Class of 2008
2003 MMEP Participant, 2005 SMEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Having participated in SMEP impacted my
life and career in ways I could have never
imagined. Contributing to the program now
as a TA/RA is an experience I will cherish for
years. The friends I have made and the
educational lessons I’ve learned provided me
with lifelong memories. This program is an
incredibly helpful tool that has contributed to
the lives of many including me, my sister who
also participated, and the other thousands of
students, TA/RA’s and staff involved. It
provided me an opportunity have fun while
learning a lot.
---Chris Reverte, P&S Class of 2008
2001 MMEP Participant, 2005 SMEP RA/TA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Being an RA for the SMEP program at
Columbia was one of the most challenging yet
rewarding experiences of my life. As an RA I
had the unique experience of becoming
acquainted with students of various
backgrounds and experiences, both socially
and academically. Though I expected this
summer to be primarily a teaching
experience, I actually learned so much from
my students. Working with them has given me
renewed motivations to continue my studies
as well as to continue to be involved in
activities in which I can mentor and teach
students. Though being an RA was more work
than I expected, I can think of no greater
compensation than to be appreciated by my
students.
---Steven Williams, P&S Class of 2008
2001 MMEP Participant, 2005 SMEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Participating on SMEP as an TA/RA was definitely
a different experience than participating as a
student. It had some things in common, like
providing the opportunity to interact with people
from diverse backgrounds. As a TA/RA, I learned a
lot from the students and their experiences.
The perspective from the TA/RA’s point of view
gives you some insight into how much work is
necessary or this program to run smoothly. My
fellow TA/RA’s were a big help on this and working
with them was an honor. In addition, you learn to
interact with the students and not only as a mentor,
but as a teacher. In my opinion to be in such a
position will be one of great value on my future
career and appreciate every moment of it.
---Ernesto Rodriguez, P&S Class of 2008
2003 MMEP Participant, 2005 SMEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Probably one of the most valuable experiences
from participating in MMEP was the inspiration
from seeing several Black and Latino health
professionals defying the odds and willing to
help me achieve my goals. I can't think of a
better way to gain the confidence and drive
necessary to become a minority physician or
dentist than to have a living breathing example
of one willing to mentor you. Your classmates
are another valuable aspect. I am still in
contact will several people from the year I did
the program, and we all cheer each other on
towards our goals. Get to know each other,
don't be shy! Talk to as many people as you
can.
----T.D. Bell, P&S Class of 2009
MMEP Participant 2003, 2006 SMDEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
My name is Sandy Charles and I am currently a second
year medical student. I did MMEP the summer after my
freshmen year in college and it truly solidified my desire
to become a physician. What I enjoyed most about the
program here at Columbia was that in addition to being
given critical academic skills that helped me excel during
my undergraduate years, I was given the opportunity to
experience the clinical setting in a way that was never
possible before. Not only was I able to observe a large
number of surgeries and medical procedures, but I was
also given the rare opportunity of doing so wearing a
white coat. When I put on that white coat and witnessed
firsthand the comfort that patients received simply upon
seeing that symbol of the medical profession, I knew
without a doubt that being a doctor would be the most
fulfilling career for me. My clinical experiences at MMEP
enabled me to see the profound effect physicians had on
almost every aspect of their patients’ lives. The diverse
faculty and staff that I met during the program at
Columbia were also extremely caring and supportive.
When I left MMEP that summer I loved Columbia so
much that I knew it was where I wanted to receive my
medical training. I am so happy that dream became a
reality and I am looking forward to helping current
SMDEP students experiences the joys that I did!
----Sandy Charles, P&S Class of 2009
2001 MMEP Participant, 2006 SMDEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
I hate to use clichés - and I really hate to use multiple
clichés - but for me, MMEP has truly opened my eyes and
unlocked doors for me. Having grown up and gone to
college in North Carolina, I remember choosing Columbia
for MMEP because I figured “New York City might be a little
different” than NC. This is no surprise to me now, but New
York City is a LOT different than North Carolina. I
appreciated so many different perspectives and cultures in
my six weeks here; summer in the city meant attending
concerts, enjoying shows, visiting hotspots, touring
museums, and even watching movies that I would never
have seen in my hometown. The city was sometimes
overwhelming, but every experience became a great
memory. I wish I could tell you more about how your
program will be, but my academic experience was surely
different than yours will be. What I can tell you is that
Columbia MMEP offered a great taste of medical school.
Our curriculum involved the same anatomy and biomedical
instruction that first-year medical students received. Our ER
clerkships rotated through the same emergency rooms
through which ER residents rotate. Perhaps most
importantly, our program helped me understand and
prepare for the apprenticeship of medicine. One last cliché
for you – when I was in college, medical school seemed like
it was across a canyon from me; any wrong move, and I
might fail. MMEP was a bridge that helped me cross.
--David Carbonell, P&S Class of 2009
2003 MMEP Participant, 2006 SMDEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
I am here in Dental School partly because of my
participation in MMEP. My experiences in the dental
clinic was my first of a kind and a career changing
experience. I was exposed to so much in the various
specialties in dentistry I changed my track to pre-
dentistry. Through the program I received help to take
the Kaplan DAT prep. course. I will definitely
recommend SMDEP to any youngster interested in
Medicine and Dentistry.
--Richard Ansong, SDOS Class of 2008
2002 MMEP Dental Participant, 2006 SMDEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Getting into medical school as most students will
tell you takes a considerable amount of hard work,
foresight, support, and confidence. My summer as
a participant in the MMEP program gave me a
better perspective on these aspects of pursuing a
medical education in addition to showing me how
to succeed once I got there. The program was
challenging on many fronts, but my experiences in
the classroom and the hospital confirmed for me
that I was up to the challenge of becoming a
physician.
Apart from the academic and career development
facets of the program, I think the most valuable
part of the SMDEP program is the students. It is a
unique academic and social opportunity to be
around such a talented and diverse group while
simultaneously living in a city that has limitless
options. Looking back at the relationships I
formed with other students, teachers, and
administrators, I feel really fortunate to have
participated in such a unique program.
--Darius Fewlass, P&S Class of 2009
2003 MMEP Participant, 2006 SMDEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Participating in SMDEP at Columbia was a turning point
for my future career in medicine. During my first clinical
experience at Columbia, an elderly female patient
reached out to touch me and mustered her energy to say
“I’m so proud of you that you are here.” From that
moment, I realized the need and impact within our
diverse community for committed and culturally
competent physicians. The SMDEP program not only
encouraged me to develop the “stick-to-it-tiveness” to
succeed in medicine, but also demonstrated the
responsibility that each of us has to be compassionate
and dedicated to advancing the issues of our
communities. As you join the ranks of the SMDEP
program, you realize that you are “standing on the
shoulders of giants,” and it is up to you to ensure that you
are not standing there alone. It is an overwhelming
feeling to come to Columbia and experience an
administration, faculty, and TA/RAs that are dedicated to
your future success! Please take advantage of the
abundance of support and mentoring that is available to
you as a part of the cohort. Allow your experiences in the
clinic and the City to surprise and challenge you! Absorb
the wisdom of those who have walked the path before
you, and gain confidence in your abilities as you begin to
walk the path yourself.
--Sabra Lewsey, P&S Class of 2011
2005 SMEP Participant, 2008 SMDEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Before participating in SMDEP I was unsure as to
how competitive it was to be admitted into dental
school. It wasn’t until I took classes with other pre-
dental and pre-medical students in this academic
enrichment program that I realized the level of
discipline and commitment I needed to have in
order to successfully apply to professional school.
SMDEP also provided me with a first hand look
into the specialties of dentistry. I gained a
tremendous amount of confidence and knowledge
by participating in this program and I am thrilled to
have the opportunity to share my experience with
aspiring pre-dental students.
--Paul Jones , SDOS Class of 2012
2006 SMDEP Participant, 2008 SMDEP TA/RA
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
Coming to Columbia for the SMDEP program was a
very valuable experience. When I first arrived in Bard
Hall, I had no idea what to expect. During the
orientation, I was told that the main goal of the
program was to make each of us strong applicants for
dental and medical school. I definitely feel that the
program did a great job of introducing me to the
different specialties of dentistry and giving me a
better understanding of what is required for
admissions to dental school. Also, by choosing
Columbia University as the site for SMDEP, I got a
close look at how the school operates and I knew that
this was the dental school for me.
