Wayne Waters Presented “Presidential Award for Distinguished Service”
Wayne E. Waters, Ed Waters and Sons Contracting Company, Inc., St. Augustine, FL was presented with the PDCA
Presidential Award for Distinguished Service. The award was presented by PDCA 2010-2011 President, Don Dolly
during the Annual Business and Awards Luncheon at the Annual Conference.

Wayne has been active in the PDCA for over 15 years. He was elected to the PDCA Board of Directors in 1998.
Wayne served as a Director on the Board until 2001. From 2002 – 2003, he served as the PDCA Treasurer and after
serving six years on the Board, with two of those years as an Officer, Wayne was elected President of the PDCA in
2004. Wayne remained on the Board until the end of 2006.

In 2000, Wayne served as the Chair for the 4th PDCA Winter Roundtable Committee, held in St. Petersburg Beach,
FL. Wayne was instrumental in hiring the first full-time PDCA Executive Director in December 1999, by serving on
the Ad Hoc Committee established strictly for that purpose. Wayne served on the PDCA Finance Committee from
1999 – 2004 and was re-appointed in 2007 and currently remains on that committee today. Wayne has also served
on the Project of the Year Award Judging Committee for the past three years, excluding himself in 2011 due to a
submission by his company that was judged a winning project this year.

While Wayne’s personal participation slowed, he encouraged his staff to become active in the PDCA. Van Hogan,
Vice President, Ed Waters and Sons Contracting Company began serving on the Board of Directors in 2004 and after
moving through the Chairs, became the PDCA President from2008-2009. Van retired from the Board in 2010, but
remains active on the Communications and Education Committees.

Mike Elliott Receives the PDCA Committee Chair of the Year Award

Mike Elliott, Pile Equipment, Inc received the PDCA Committee Chair of the Year Award during the PDCA 15 th Annual
Conference for the outstanding work he has done as Chair of the Market Development Committee. Mike has
chaired the Market Development Committee for more than three years. His first objective was to make the annual
conference a more social/family friendly environment. He began this endeavor just prior to the 13th Annual
Conference in Phoenix, AZ. During the course of working with the PDCA leadership and staff, then PDCA President,
John King nicknamed Mike, FIG. Mike had the toughest time trying to find out what FIG meant. Eventually, it was
revealed to him that FIG stood for “Fun Is Good”, and the nickname stuck. Mike and his committee have been
instrumental in coordinating every aspect of the annual conference, except the educational programs. This includes
social activities, food and beverages, schedules, entertainment, gifts and modifications to the program from one
year to the next in an effort to make the conferences more attractive and enjoyable. Mike has worked tirelessly
with the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and staff to do everything within his power to make sure the
annual conferences are successful.

PDPI Influences LSU Graduate Course

Carol Friedland, Professor, Louisiana State University attended the Professors’ Driven Pile Institute (PDPI) in
2009. Some have called the PDPI one of the most important programs the PDCA provides. As example of the
importance of this program to the PDCA, its members and the driven pile industry can be seen in a very
tangible way at LSU. As a result of PDCA’s Professor’s Driven Pile Institute (PDPI), Carol has produced a
graduate level course in driven pile construction that Louisiana State University will be offering this coming fall
semester. The course will be offered as a combination in-class/on-line course that will cover the materials,
construction techniques and testing procedures used in the driven foundation industry. Specific course topics
will include: crane and hammer equipment selection, common construction practices, pile drivability, pile load
testing, dynamic pile testing and more. LSU is conducting an on-line survey to obtain industry feedback on
course topics and to solicit industry collaboration. Please provide your input at Anyone
interested in the course, how you can help promote the course, or discussing the content with Carol can
contact her at

PDCA Ramps Up for Another Professors’ Driven Pile Institute

The PDCA’s 5th biennial Professors’ Driven Pile Institute will be back at Utah State University in June 2011.
PDCA’s partner, Joe Caliendo, Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and
Geotechnical Engineering Division Head has assembled another great program in Logan, Utah. The PDPI has
21 Professors, from 20 different universities teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in deep foundations
attending this year’s program.

The five-day program provides an intensive learning environment in driven pile foundations through a variety
of classroom, computer lab and field exercises. The program is designed to provide instructional information
to the attending professors on driven pile foundation, which they can in turn incorporate into their deep
foundations courses. Armed with this knowledge, the professors are better equipped to teach future civil,
structural and geotechnical engineer about driven pile, which these students can apply in practice after

The program begins on Monday, June 19 and concludes on Friday, June 24. During this time in the classroom,
the “students” will learn wave mechanics, geotechnical considerations, pile types and pile equipment, special
design considerations, negative skin friction, axial, lateral and static load tests, WAVE equation modeling and
applications, GRLWEAP, dynamic measurements, CAPWAP, LRFD, PILE CHECK, Site Characterizations and
economics of driven pile. During field exercises, they will see demonstrated axial and lateral static load tests,
pile re-strikes, SPT energy measurements, CPT demos, and pile driving with a closed end pipe pile. Test results
will also be discussed back in the classroom and computer lab.

This program costs the PDCA approximately $45,000. The PDCA could not continue to provide this very
important program if not for the generous contributions by our members. The PDCA would like to
acknowledge the following members, who made contributions to the PDCA Professors’ Driven Pile Institute in
2011. They are:
