UC IN THE VALLEY
UC VALLEY MEDICAL EDUCATION
UC has contributed greatly to the San Joaquin Valley, its people and the local economy through a wide variety of educational, health care and agricultural programs. UC currently has nearly 40 facilities in the region. The UC Bakersfield Center serves the educational needs of the southern San Joaquin Valley by increasing opportunities for students in the region to prepare for college admission – especially given the opening of UC Merced in 2004. Services such as UC summer courses, teacher training, school partnerships, professional development, UC admissions information and public policy forums are offered at the center year-round.
UC San Francisco Fresno Medical Education Program gives Central Valley residents access to the highest quality health care while training the region’s next generation of physicians. The center has developed an innovative model for training doctors and providing health services through “telemedicine” in remote rural areas that has graduated more than 2,000 physicians, with most staying in the Central Valley to practice. Affiliated with several UC Schools of Medicine, Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield trains more than 100 residents each year, specializing in a range of fields The Lindco from emergency medicine to obstetrics.
UC RIVERSIDE AGRICULTURAL GENOMICS INSTITUTE
The UC Riverside Agricultural Genomics Institute brings together faculty from every academic unit on campus to foster innovations that will make possible advancements in the quality of life - from greater agricultural productivity in California’s $27-billion agricultural industry and more nutritious foods to improved human health and environmental quality.

The Lindcove Research and Extension Center, established by San Joaquin Valley growers and UC Riverside, provides agricultural research for the California citrus industry. Researchers focus on areas such as the management of citrus pests. The Comprehensive Blood & Cancer Center in Bakersfield, a UCLA-affiliated cancer center, provides compassionate care for the diagnosis, treatment, education and prevention of cancer using a state-of-the-art treatment approach. http://cbccusa.com/ The California Policy Research Center (CPRC) applies UC’s research expertise to the analysis, development and implementation of state and federal policy. CPRC provides policy-relevant UC-led research on statewide issues, oversees legislatively mandated research projects, and disseminates research findings through publications and special briefings. CPRC also hosts projects such as the Welfare Policy Research Project (WPRP), the California Program on Access to Care (CPAC) and the California-Mexico Health Initiative (CMHI). The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is an affiliate of the UCLA Medical Center and provides a full range of medical care to thousands of veterans in the region. The system houses a teaching hospital and provides a full range of patient care services using state-of-theart technology. The system operates a satellite clinic in Bakersfield in District 18. http://www.va.gov A systemwide multi-campus research unit, the Center for Water and Wildland Resources coordinates research on water conservation. http://www.waterresources.ucr.edu/ The Puente Project runs programs at 51 community colleges and 35 high schools throughout California to increase the enrollment and retention of educationally underserved students in fouryear universities throughout the Central Valley – including the College of the Sequoias in Visalia. To date, Puente has provided mentoring, teaching, and counseling for over 20,000 under-represented students. Puente students graduate from four-year universities at twice the average rate. http://www.puente.net

EAOP works with 33 high school, middle and elementary schools in Kern County alone. http://www.eaop.org UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources Cooperative Extension provides accessible and comprehensive agricultural research information for local growers, ranchers, governments and the larger community through county advisors located at the Bakersfield office. UC advisors provide research-based information in several languages on crop production, pest control, food safety, nutrition, youth development and water quality. http://ucanr.org UC’s MESA (Mathematics, Engineering & Science Achievement) works to prepare educationally disadvantaged students for four-year colleges and runs programs at several Bakersfield schools including Foothill High in District 18. http://mesa.ucop.edu The UCSF Fresno Alzheimer's Research Center (ARC) conducts research and offers treatment, counseling and caregiver support for patients, families and health care professionals. ARC is the only resource of its kind in the Central Valley. The program serves Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, Mariposa, Stanislaus, Tulare, San Luis Obispo, and Tuolumne counties. http://www.ucsfresno.edu/alzheimer/ UC’s College Prep Initiative (UCCP) provides free access to online college prep courses to schools that otherwise are not able to provide an adequate advanced placement (AP) and honors curriculum. UCCP currently serves about 1,200 students in the Central San Joaquin Valley, including Inyo and Mono Counties.
