Life offers a mixture of situations to us, there are times we find ourselves capable enough to
handle the situation, but there are other times where we need a support to handle these situations.
We need someone to listen to us. Counseling creates an environment which will help us to find a
person who can listen to us and help us out with an alternate way of handling the situation.
I have worked with humanitarian workers since 1995, and full-time since 2006. This includes

My focus in working with you is to help you gain and maintain control of yourself and life despite
present and past stress and trauma. To that end, I use a variety of approaches including solution-
focused, psychodynamic, family systems, cognitive behavioral, supportive, and strategic
approaches. As an African-American woman, first-generation Nigerian-American, and single
parent, I am especially sensitive to issues of difference.
I believe in a holistic approach to counseling/psychotherapy which makes use of the client's faith
belief system as a strength in the healing process. My aproach is both pastoral and clinical, and
takes into consideration the cultural background and family system from which a client comes. The
techniques I use vary according to the presenting issues. If trauma, I may make use of EMDR. If
the issue is marital, may approach may be a family systems psychodynamic approach. Basically, I
Working away from your home and your community, working in regions of conflict or trauma, or
returning to your home country after these experiences can be a very difficult experience. I work
with people around issues of re-entry as well as understanding and integrating the impact your
work is having or has had on your personal life. Oftentimes, those of us attracted to professions
where we focus on helping others do not attend to our own self-care with as much passion and
I have over 22 years experience as a professional counselor. Currently, the majority of my work is
with sex offenders, abuse victims, GLBT clients, violent offenders. I have extensive experience
working with combat veterans and their families, worked with first responders and family members
of the 911 tragedy in NYC on a volunteer basis. My approach to counseling is Transpersonal and
Cognitive-Behavioral.
I believe that responders providing intervention for individuals in crisis, or post trauma, generally
benefit from knowing the principles of Psychological First Aid and Headington Inst. materials.
Responders' own preparation, support and debriefing are essential to the effectiveness of their
work and their own continued well-being.
My practice employs an insight oriented approach that also embraces cognitive strategies, I
strongly support a strength-based resilience approach for coping with challenges and in maintaining
wellness. I favor a preventive/wellness orientation to my facilitative approach.

I am a psychoanalyst with specialization in treatment of patients experiencing conflicts in

I am primarily a disaster mental health consultant/specialist. The majority of my time is spent
training and supporting relief workers.
My ambitions are to empower people in who they are and freeing them to live in their full God-
given potential. My thereutical approach is more eclectic with more cognitive behavior emphasis.
I am a feminist, psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapist, teacher, and consultant. Since 1975, I

My mission is to provide Christ's love and mental health education, treatment and assistance to
those who I am able, glorifying God.
I have a deep interest in the global mental health issues related to human rights and am especially
interested in working with the relief workers. My experience in the Harvard Global Mental Health
Certificate Program has expanded my understanding of how difficult and unrelenting the work is for
human rights workers in the field. My understanding of the impact of vicarious trauma on human
beings so committed to human rights that they open themselves to the suffering of others is my

At any point in life all of us can be presented with challenges that appear to be insurmountable.
Through my experience I have learned that each of us possesses areas of strength. These
strengths can help us to overcome many difficulties in our lives. My commitment as a therapist is
to assist individuals in finding and activating this inherent energy. This shared process can often
lead to happier more fulfilling lives and a greater sense of well-being.
Would you like to learn how to live a happier life? Do you need help learning how to deal with the
daily stresses of life? Is your teenager our of control? Are you and your mate not seeing eye to
eye? Would you like to let go of the past and learn how to deal with the present? Are you someone
who is willing to trust the process of the therapy work and has the desire to explore the ideas of
letting go of their emotional pain and anxiety? Thru my work I use a combination of cognitive

I specialize in the treatment of females above the age of ten, including adolescents and adult
women and their families. My orientation is primarily cognitive behavioral but this is flexible

I am interested in helping you find your voice within and with others. The therapy relationship is
the most important factor in helping you move beyond personal pain and discomfort. Depression,
anxiety, past traumas and compulsive behaviors can be relieved through understanding your
history in a protected relationship. It takes courage to talk with a therapist especially when other
human relationships or even therapy relationships have proven to be disappointing. Together we
I invision my role as a guide assisting people in finding the best of who they are. I work to provide
a safe, open and nurturing environment that can enrich, transform and expand people's experience
of life. I use varied tools to assist people aside from talk therapy including: art, meditation,
hypnosis and photo therapy.
I am born in the USA, of Indian immigrant parents, and this is partly basis for my openness to
different cultures and lifestyles. When providing solutions to an organization, I utilize knowledge
spanning from public health to psychiatry and from yoga to group dynamics. After my degree in
Comparative World Religious Studies, I spent one year in India studying several social change
agencies and development workers. This inspired me to develop skills to assist such agencies and
workers. After medical school, one year of psychiatry internship, two years of behavioral medicine
residency, and two years public health graduate education, I continue to return to the field for my
most precious experiences. I have trained agencies and workers in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India,
Brazil, and the USA. I founded a service platform called Psychosocial Assistance Without Borders,
and this has brought me in solidarity with several inspiring and brilliant service organizations,
including the Headington Institute, which I want to thank for their advocacy and hard work.
The Sidran Institute Help Desk answers phone calls and emails from indiviudals looking for trauma
resources primarily in the US and Canada. We provide all consumers with their own individualized
list of trauma resources (therpists, treatment centers, support groups etc)We also provide reading
recomendations on a wide variety trauma related topics specfically including PTSD and Vicarious
Traumatization.
Operating from a foundation of Christian values, I work with clients from all spiritual and religious
perspectives. I integrate psychodynamic, systemic, and cognitive-behavioral approaches. I have a
great deal of experience working with persons from different cultural backgrounds. I teach and
consult regularly in Croatia and Ukraine and, through the nonprofit Care and Counsel International,
am actively involved in creating global networks of counselors and caregivers. I am the Facilitator
for the Care and Counsel Special Interest Group for the Lausanne Committee for World
Evangelization.
While I am psychoanalytically trained, my approach with those who have witnessed trauma, which
can disrupt one's life enormously, is to help the individual heal themselves. As a child of Holocaust
Survivors I have witnessed both the incredible disruption that trauma causes, as well as the
incredible resilience and healing that individuals possess that allow them to go on with the
everyday business of life. I have found that individuals when given the space to speak of their
thoughts, feelings and the graphic images, sounds and sensations that they've witnessed will heal,
whether they be a trauma survivor, releif worker or anyone who has been touched by trauma.
Over thirty years of clinical work has exposed to me the widest range of dilemmas that affect
people. I welcome people from diverse ehtnic, occupational and economic backgrounds.
Undertaking therapy or consultation for the aftermath of humanitarian work can often evoke
feelings of failure in a person, as though he or she should have been able to "do it him/herself," or
that "it's silly to be overwhelmed by whatever I'm dealing with." The anxiety of meeting someone
for help with whatever challenges you may be facing is understandable but I like to think of it as
"taking a course in yoruself" and finding ways to adapt to the situations you find yourself in rather
than either strength or weakness, failure or success. My work focuses on how the adaptation you
are making works or doesn't work in your life, what patterns you may have established in the
relationships you have that hark back to how you have managed to deal with the particular
challenges you have faced in other periods of your life. Together we will find ways that make
sense, work and offer understanding about how you come to be in the place you find yourself at
this moment.
I believe that Christ alone is the WONDERFUL COUNSELOR and I am privileged to be His
servant. My education, training and techniques serve as tools to provide clinical excellence within
the leadership of the Holy Spirit. There must be a combination of the clinical and the theological for
this ministry to be all that it should be. If God doens't shopw up in counseling, we may as well all
go home. If I offer less than excellent techniques and skills, I have lowered the standards for my
profession and not offered my best to the client. I have a heart for missions and a passion for the
least of these and those who have never heard about Him. I have done short term missions in over
40 countries. I count it an honor to serve those who serve overseas.

I have provided on-site critical incident stress management services to individuals and small and
large groups following traumatic incidents in the workplace as well as large-scale traumatic events.
As a counselor, I strive to build a strong working alliance and trust in the inherent strength of all
individuals. Additionally, I am trained in EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing)
and combine this highly effective trauma therapy with cognitive therapy and stress reduction
techniques to help clients positively transform their lives.
In addition to working with Hurricane Katrina and other disaster survivors, I have worked in private
practice, hospital outpatient, community mental health and agency settings. As a counselor, I have
provided individual and group counseling to a broad spectrum of clients with a variety of difficult
issues. I have served as a private consultant to numerous health and human service
organizations, specializing in the areas of burnout prevention as well as "the art of care." I have
served as instructor at two universities as well as Director of Quality Assurance for Methodist Youth
Services, Chicago. In addition to my clinical mental health training, I have an extensive
background in human development, communication, and productivity. I have post-graduate
training in the mind/body connection as well as two certifications in trauma, loss and bereavement.
I am trained in EMDR. My personal experience of traumatic loss in 1995, left me with an
understanding and profound compassion for others. I am deeply commmitted to helping people
who are experiencing pain and suffering and have found that working with victims of trauma and
loss is the most rewarding work I do.
Dr. Vogel is a clinical psychologist with a specialty focus in trauma and extensive experience
working in the international arena. She is currenlty working in Liberia with The Center for Victims of
Torture and spent one year in Nigeria volunteering as a psycho-social/trauma specialist with
Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders). Gwen is currently focused on researching and
applying psychosocial and mental health interventions in non-Western settings. During the summer
of 2006 she worked in Bosnia with The University of Denver (DU), supervising advanced doctoral
students working in a variety of NGO environments, and continues to collaborate with DU and
Doctors Without Borders. She is the Director of Field operations for SalusWorld, an International
NGO focused on providing psycho-social support to other NGOs at all levels. She received a Psy.D.
from the University of Denver in 2004 and completed her internship at Manhattan Psychiatric
Center, an inpatient psychiatric and forensic hospital, in New York, New York.
Each human being has great potential and great worth, often life's problems prevent them from
reaching the levels of happiness, contentment, and personel satisfaction for which they strive. In
my work as a therapis, counselor, consultant, trainer, advisor and yes friend. I strive to help them
over come the barries which inhibit functional human performance in all its categories. In my
work, I use skills, techniques, and approaches to problem resolutions which seem to be the best for
the issues involved. I have worked in most mental health, counseling, and rehabilitation settings;
both physical and psychological. For an example I have provided therapy and after care programs
to quadriplegic patients and in another sestting I was the Coordinating critical incidence stress
debriefer who worked with UN staff members in Africa during the Rwandain civil war and, in yet
another setting worked with crime scene investigator from the ICTY to resolve their stress issues.
I enjoy helping people help themselves....these experiences are my true rewards.
My background is in cognitive-behavioral therapy but I also used the solution-oriented therapy,
motivational interviewing, art therapy techniques and EMDR.
