This author has fallen into the trap of believing the leadership gurus about their being a difference between managers and leaders. Also, to say that there really is no definition of the term "leadership" is correct only if referring to the fact that the supposed experts are unable to agree. Unfortunately for us all, these experts have never practiced what they preach much less proven its effectiveness in the workplace. I managed people for over 30 years, made all the mistakes possible, and learned effective fixes to them. I was able to successfully turn around four management disasters including a 1300 person unionized group in New York City. Don't get confused by catchy phrases like "A manager does things right, a leader does the right thing." They sell books but they have no substance. Managing is a term that applies to the effective use of a resource such as money management or supply chain management or what-have-you. People are a resource and they must be managed like any other resource, but obviously the tools are different for each resource. Leadership applies to people and denotes the sending of value standard messages to people which they then follow/use. Thus we say that they have been "led" in the direction of those value standards. Leadership is therefore one side of the coin called values, the other side being followership. Leadership is not a process any manager can change. It happens inexorably every minute of every day because of the way people are. The only choice available to a manager is the standard (good, bad, mediocre or in between) which employees will follow. For instance, the top-down command and control technique is a specific method by which to manage people . Since top-down by its nature demeans and disrespects people, it "leads" them to demean and disrespect their work, their customers, each other and their bosses resulting in very poor performance. If you want to lead employees to very high performance, treat them with great respect and not like robots, thus leading them to treat their work, their customers, each other and their bosses with great respect. Attitude is the bottom line of Success and success doesn't mean absence of failure but attainment of ultimate objective. It means winning the war, not every Battle EDWIN C. BLISS Managers can be great leaders. They can play the role of both manager as well as leader. It depends upon their perception and desire. Most people fail not because of lack of ability or intelligence but because of lack of desire, direction, dedication and discipline. Human Resources is the most valuable asset of any Business. It is more valuable than capital as equipment. Unfortunately, it is also the most wasted. People can be biggest asset or biggest liability. It is an obvious thing in an association to think the top management-The CEO's , COO's, V.P as leaders . Who are expected to motivate, inspire and transform thus subordinates and peers. But now leadership is not only confined to people having authoriatative title. As a matter of fact, many executives of organization lack the characteristics of a good leader because these spills were never cultivates early on. Association Managers have some unique qualities of Business professionals. They fulfill ample amount of responsibilities right from Budgeting, they provide effective communications across departments and hierarchical levels, they are the ultimate multi-taskers , information gathers and negotiators. As a result they have all the skills and qualities that a leader should have. But they are not called LEADERS. NOW LET US SEE WHAT EXACTLY LEADERSHIP IS: Leadership is a complex dynamic that involves three components- The Leader, The Follower and The Situation. You can't compel anyone to accept you as a Leader. It is done by one's Will and leader should have certain incredible qualities. He should be Meticulous . There is no actual definition of the term Leadership resulting in a perspective from which to view it. Managers and Leaders share a particular relationship. While managers are associated with words like efficiency, planning, paper work, regulations, control and consistency. Leaders are more associated with words like :: Risk tasking , Creativity , Change and vision. Leaders are thought to do the RIGHT THING, whereas Managers are thought to do THINGS RIGHT. There are some distinctions between managers and leaders* * * * Managers Managers Managers Managers administers; Leaders innovates Managers maintain; maintain; Leaders Develop Control; Leaders Inspire focus on short term; Leaders always keep long term in mind



* Managers ask how and when, Leaders ask what and why * Managers directs, Leaders motivates Success is the manifestation of Good Luck that results from inspiration, aspiration, desperation and perspiration, generally in that sequence.
