Re: Physical Education
Date: September 9, 2010
Welcome back to school! We hope you all have had a wonderful and restful summer vacation. We are looking
forward to a fun and rewarding year in Physical Education class.
Physical Education will meet twice a week. Stretches and cardiovascular exercises are done in each class. We
would like to review the curriculum and policies for the year with you. We ask that you review this with your
student. PLEASE PRINT OUT AND SIGN THE LAST PAGE OF THIS LETTER AND RETURN THE
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 20, 2010.
UNIFORM: Students are expected to be in complete uniform for each class. They must dress with the
following CLEAN St. John’s gym uniform. It is highly recommended that each student have two sets of
monogrammed uniforms.
1. St. John’s red T-shirt MONOGRAMMED with student’s last name above the crest.
2. St. John’s navy or plaid shorts MONOGRAMMED with student’s last name on
lower left leg.
3. Black or White socks only.
4. Appropriate athletic shoes that tie tightly to the foot. No black soles, thick-heeled shoes or roller
shoes allowed.
5. Jewelry is not to be worn during class.
6. When a new uniform is purchase, it must be monogrammed within two weeks.
During inclement weather, students may wear the St. John’s NAVY Cardinal sweatshirt and NAVY sweatpants.
Please note that the failure to wear NAVY only will result in a non-suit. Students are not allowed to wear
sweaters or zipper sweatshirts during class.
The uniform should be left at school for the week. Uniforms should be laundered every week. If your child
does not bring their uniform home to be washed, please INSIST that they do so. We expect to see a clean
uniform or it will result in a non-suit. No one is to loan their uniform to another student. This infraction will
result in both students receiving a green slip.
ITEMS NEEDED FOR P.E.
1. LOCK: This will be supplied by the School. Everyone is assigned to a locker to store P.E.
clothes during the year. Lockers must remain locked at all times. DO NOT GIVE ANYONE YOUR
COMBINATION. The P.E. Office has a record of all combinations should a student forget theirs. Requesting
their locker combination (after October 15, 2010) or sharing lockers at any time, will result in a Green slip.
2. DEODORANT: All students are expected to keep roll-on deodorant in their locker. This is to be used
after each class. No spray deodorant or perfume is allowed.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION GOALS: To develop and utilize the student’s movement potential through
involvement in a well-balanced program of sports activities, highly organized games and physical fitness
testing. Your student will be experiencing some of the following organized games:
1. First Trimester will emphasize: Flag Football, Volleyball, Kickball and Fitness Testing
2. Second Trimester will emphasize: Basketball, Aerobics, Soccer and Fitness Testing
3. Third Trimester will emphasize: Track and Field events
NON-PARTICIPATION DUE TO INJURY OR ILLNESS: A note is required from a parent or a doctor.
The student is required to show the teacher their uniform. If a student is not participating in P.E. class, they are
not allowed to participate in any activities at recess. If they are able to do activities at recess, they are then
required to participate in P.E. class regardless of note from parent or doctor. STUDENTS UNABLE TO
PARTICIPATE WILL DO WRITTEN WORK ON FITNESS. They will be given a daily grade on this work.
EVALUATION: Your student’s Physical Education grade will be based on the following factors:
1. Participation with a sincere effort
2. Demonstration of good character and sportsmanship
3. Respect shown to teachers and classmates
4. Learning and demonstrating the rules of the game
5. Improvement on individual fitness level over the course of the trimester
6. Each Green Slip received will result in the grade being lowered
7. A Referral is equivalent to receiving two Green Slips
Absences: When a student has missed their fourth day of P.E. each trimester, they are to complete a chapter
from Fitness For Life. A chapter will be done for each subsequence absence. An “incomplete” will be given as
a grade until these chapters are completed.
LETTER GRADE AND CITIZENSHIP GRADES: The Physical Education grade is part of the GPA.
The Middle School Physical Education Report (Green slip) will determine the grade students will receive on
their trimester report card. An example of the Middle School Physical Education Report follows. If a student is
suspended on a day of P.E., their grade will be reduced by 10 points.
