Communication Technology Final Exam
1. Do you want a career with a future? Knowledge is power, especially in
the current job market. Advancing technology will demand that you will be
required to develop a Life-Long Learning approach if you are to succeed in
today’s global marketplace. [4 marks]
In your own words explain what “LIFE LONG LEARNING” means to you.
2. When building a computer what six parts do you think are the most
important for the efficient operation of your new computer? Keep in mind
that in consideration for the purchase of these parts research is required to
see if all aspects of your new hardware are compatible with other devices in
the computer’s configuration. [4 marks]
Answer Important Parts Needed:
□ Motherboard
□ CPU – (Heatsink)
□ Memory/Ram
□ Video Card
□ Sound Card
□ Hard Drive
□ Case
□ Power Supply
□ CD/DVD ROM or Burner
□ Keyboard and Mouse
Fill-in the blanks:
3. __________________________________ (answer: Communication) is a
process that allows beings - in particular humans - to exchange information
by several methods. Communication requires that some kinds of symbols
from a kind of language are exchanged. There are auditory means, such as
speaking or singing, and nonverbal, physical means, such as body language,
sign language, paralanguage, touch or eye contact. [1 marks]
4. Communication skills, including _______________________ (answer:
written) and ________________________________ (answer: oral)
presentations, as well as an ability to work with others

makes it nearly impossible for them to compete effectively in the workplace,
and stands in the way of career progression. [4 marks]
Definitions (true of false) [1 marks each]
6. A hierarchy is a system of ranking and organizing things or people, where each
element of the system (except for the top element) is a subordinate to a single
other element. (TRUE)

12. Job Interviews
It takes just a quick glance, maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate you when you
meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you
based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, your mannerisms, and
how you are dressed.
With every new encounter, you are evaluated and yet another person’s impression of you
is formed. These first impression can be nearly impossible to reverse or undo, making
those first encounters extremely important, for they set the tone for the all the
relationships that follows.
So, whether they are in your career or social life, it’s important to know how to create a
good first impression. Much of what you need to do to make a good impression is
common sense.
We all will one day be finding a job and will have to attend a job interview.
In detail (with a little extra thought and preparation), explain four (4)
important actions that allow you to hone your intuitive style and make every
first impression not just good but great. [12 marks]
i. [3 marks]
ii. [3 marks]
iii. [3 marks]
iv. [3 marks]
Answer:
o nervous habits
o body language
o attitude
o polite, attentive and courteous
o Be on Time
o turn off your mobile phone
Be aware of your nervous habits, you can try to keep them in check.
Use your body language to project appropriate confidence and self-assurance.
Stand tall, smile (of course), make eye contact, greet with a firm handshake. All
of this will help you project confidence and encourage both you and the other
person feel better at ease.
Your attitude shows through in everything you do. Project a positive attitude,
even in the face of criticism. Strive to learn from your meetings and to contribute
appropriately, maintaining an upbeat manner and a smile.
It goes without saying that good manners and polite, attentive and courteous
behavior help make a good first impression. In fact, anything less can ruin the one
chance you have at making that first impression. So be on your best behavior!
One modern manner worth mentioning is “turn off your mobile phone”. What
first impression will you create if you are already speaking to someone other than
the person you are meeting for the first time? Your new acquaintance deserves
100% of your attention. Anything less and you’ll create a less than good first
impression.
Be on Time The person you are meeting for the first time is not interested in your
“good excuse” for running late. Plan to arrive a few minutes early. And allow
flexibility for possible delays in traffic or taking a wrong turn. Arriving early is
much better that arriving late, hands down, and is the first step in creating a great
first impression.
13. What does the word Entrepreneur mean? [3 marks]
An entrepreneur is a person who operates a new enterprise or venture and assumes some
accountability for the inherent risks, who seeks to capitalize on new and profitable
endeavors or business; usually with considerable initiative and risk
As there are many statistics on the way entrepreneurs have failed in ventures, mainly this
is due to the lack of a mission statement and vision, proper systems, and no passion for
the actual work they do. In fact having started a new venture mainly for money will work
against that person most of the time.
Assessing Yourself
14. Circle Yes or No for the each of the following: [3 marks]
a) Are you a self-starter? Yes No
b) How do you feel about taking risks? Yes No
c) Are you a leader? Yes No

future career goals. [5 marks]
OR
If you have 7 or more Yes’s for your total in Question 14 write a paragraph
(minimum 75 words ) on do you think this will be a hindrance, or an asset,
and how will it effect the outcome in the setting and accomplishing of your
future goals and objectives? [5 marks]
Digital Image File Types
16. BMP is also a lossless storage format. However, in contrast with common
TIFF usage, it looks for patterns in the image that it can use to compress file size.
The compression is exactly reversible, so the image is recovered exactly. (False)
True or False
17. PNG is an uncompressed proprietary format invented by Microsoft. There is
really no reason to ever use this format. (False)
True or False
18. GIF creates a table of up to 256 colors from a pool of 16 million. If the image
has fewer than 256 colors, GIF can render the image exactly. When the image
contains many colors, software that creates the GIF uses any of several algorithms
to approximate the colors in the image with the limited palette of 256 colors
available. GIF achieves compression in two ways. First, it reduces the number of
colors of color-rich images, thereby reducing the number of bits needed per pixel,
as just described. Second, it replaces commonly occurring patterns (especially
large areas of uniform color) with a short abbreviation: instead of storing "white,
white, white, white, white," it stores "5 white." Thus, GIF is "lossless" only for
images with 256 colors or less. For a rich, true color image, GIF may "lose"
99.998% of the colors. (TRUE)
True or False
19. BMP is an uncompressed proprietary format invented by Microsoft. There is
really no reason to ever use this format. (TRUE)
True or False
20. JPG is optimized for photographs and similar continuous tone images that
contain many, many colors. It can achieve astounding compression ratios even
while maintaining very high image quality. GIF compression is unkind to such
images. JPG works by analyzing images and discarding kinds of information that
the eye is least likely to notice. It stores information as 24 bit color. Important: the
degree of compression of JPG is adjustable. At moderate compression levels of
photographic images, it is very difficult for the eye to discern any difference from
the original, even at extreme magnification. Compression factors of more than 20
are often quite acceptable. Better graphics programs, such as Paint Shop Pro and
Photoshop, allow you to view the image quality and file size as a function of
compression level, so that you can conveniently choose the balance between
quality and file size. (TRUE)
True or False
21. Before you purchase any Digital Image software there must be some things to
consider. You certainly don’t want to waste your hard earned money on software
that won’t do what you require in the job application you wish to use it for. So
before you buy the product, you must benchmark (evaluate) the application.
For your research into the Digital Image applications that you need to buy what
would be the 5 most important points for your consideration prior to your
purchase. List them in order of importance. [5 marks]

26. The three types of lists used in web page development are: [1 mark]
UNORDERED LISTS (uses bullets)
ORDERED LISTS (uses numbers)
DEFINITION LISTS (no numbers or bullets). (TRUE)
True or False
CREATING A LIST - Lists are often used to present information in an easy to read fashion. Lists
can also be used to indent information. Lists can be bulleted, numbered or printed without bullets
and numbers. It should also be noted that in any type of list, you can still use the line break and
paragraph tags and the normal text markup tags to emphasize text, etc.
27. If you want to be a Web Master, you will have to host your web site with
an ISP. What does ISP stand for _________________________________?
Answer: (Internet Service Provider).
28. Bandwidth

True or False
38. Streaming
In web terms: The action when a web page automatically forwards (redirects) the user to
another web page. This can sometimes be in the form of malware that uses redirecting to
annoying proportions. (FALSE)
True or False
39. TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol)
A collection of Internet communication protocols between two computers. The TCP
protocol is responsible for an error free connection between two computers, while the IP
protocol is responsible for the data packets sent over the network. (TRUE)
True or False
40. URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

via phone lines. (TRUE)
True or False
42. WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)
In Web terms: To display a web page being edited exactly the same way it will be
displayed on the web. (TRUE)
True or False
43. What does a codec do? [3 marks]
Shrinks (encode)
Playable (decode)
Speed up transfer on internet
Codec is a computer program that both shrinks large movie files, and
makes them playable on your computer. Codec programs are required for
your media player to play your downloaded music and movies. Because
video and music files are large, they become difficult to transfer across the
Internet quickly. To help speed up downloads, mathematical "codecs"
were built to encode ("shrink") a signal for transmission and then decode it
for viewing or editing. Without codecs, downloads would take three to
five times longer than they do now.
44. What are five of the kbit/s rates for MP3 audio? [7 marks]
Audio (MP3)
32 kbit/s - MW (AM) quality
96 kbit/s - FM quality
128-160 kbit/s - Standard Bitrate quality; difference can sometimes
be obvious (e.g. bass quality)
192 kbit/s - DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) quality. Quickly
becoming the new 'standard' bitrate for MP3 music; difference can
be heard by few people.
224-320 kbit/s - Near CD Quality. Sound is near indistinguishable
from most CDs.
Bitrates in Multimedia
In digital multimedia, bitrate represents the amount of information, or detail, that
is stored per unit of time of a recording If lossy data compression is used on audio
or visual data, differences from the original signal will be introduced; if the
compression is substantial, or lossy data is decompressed and recompressed, this
may become noticeable in the form of compression artifacts. Whether these affect
the perceived quality, and if so how much, depends on the compression scheme,
encoder power, the characteristics of the input data, the listener’s perceptions, the
listener's familiarity with artifacts, and the listening or viewing environment.
45. Name two of the lossless audio formats? [2 marks]
Other audio
