How do we meet today’s Security Challenges? •What can individual users do to protect their systems? •What is ITD doing at the enterprise level to combat security breaches? “Why has data and network security become so important on campus recently?” • It hasn’t become more important; it has become more visible. • More people are causing and being affected by security issues. • Desktop computers are more powerful. “What can I do to protect my computers and data?” • Install and update anti-virus software. • Maintain backup files. • Use secure connections when available. • Know what services you are running. • Keep security patches up-to-date. • Use security features like logging/auditing and tcpwrappers/ipchains/firewalls. “What are ITD and the Security Coordinator doing to protect my computers?” • • • • • • Anti-virus software Server Resources Contact for incident reports Monitoring Security announcements as needed Removing problem hosts from the network “Where can I get help?” • Your local computer administrators; group, unit, department • Organization support groups; college, division • Campus support groups; ITD, NCS, ComTech “Why did you block my computer from the network??? !!! ” Security Challenges Hosts are blocked when: • Under control of unauthorized users • Threat to other hosts on the network • Currently being abused • Severely impacting network performance Security Challenges If a host is blocked we will: • Contact the owner/administrator if known. • Contact the designated LanAdmin. • Provide guidance in diagnosing the problem and fixing it. • Remove the block when notified the host has been secured. “What is a firewall?” • A firewall is a device that sits on a network and enforces rules and limits on the traffic passing through. Security Challenges Computer security is a shared responsibility for all network users.
