This year the fair will run from July 15 – 19, 2008. On Monday night we will crown the 2008 Little Mr. & Miss and the Fair Queen, we encourage everyone to come watch this event. The contestants all work very hard and they really appreciate the support from the community. The fair will kick off on Tuesday with family night, which includes free admission to the fair, junior livestock shows, the parade and wristband night for the carnival. Again this year we are expecting a great carnival with fun for all ages. We are also very excited about the rodeo and go-cart racing we will host this year. AgriLand will still offer lots of fun and ice cream. We will also have Senior Citizens Day, open breeding cattle shows, country music in the grandstands and truck and tractor pulls. Most importantly don’t forget to stop by the food stand for a fish sandwich and a pork burger. At this time we the Board would like to thank all the sponsors and volunteers that make this event possible every year. It takes a whole year to make this 5-day fair a success. So THANK YOU for your help, we couldn’t do it without you. So when you get to the fair take a minute to look around and notice all the volunteers that are working hard so you can enjoy the fair. Check out the signs for all the businesses and individuals that have so graciously donated their time, money and equipment for our entertainment. Lastly we would like to thank our wives and families for their continued support and hard work. See you at the 2008 Montgomery County Fair!!! Box 11 Montgomery City, MO 63361 ATTN: Mr./Miss Contest 21 My experience being crowned the 2007 Montgomery County Fair Queen has been an event I will never forget. During the week of the fair, I had the opportunity to meet so many new people, as well as the chance to expand my knowledge of agriculture around our county. There are no words to thank the fair board members, my sponsors, my family and friends for their help throughout the week. I was kept very busy with all the events the fair has to offer. I had the chance to be involved in some activities I have never been a part of before. As most everyone knows, the fair queen has the opportunity to be a part of the State Fair Queen Contest. Unfortunately, I did not win, but I feel the right girl was chosen to uphold that position. I met many new girls, who like me, were proud to represent their county. I wish to whomever I crown as the 2008 Montgomery County Fair Queen, that their experience will be as memorable as mine. In these projects, 4-H members make the items displayed in the Montgomery County Fair 4-H Exhibit Building or raise and train the animals on display in County Fair shows. The Montgomery County Fair proudly provides a showcase for the skills and knowledge that 4-H members have gained through their 4-H experiences. We salute all Montgomery County 4-H members, volunteers and families and particularly those “learning by doing” experiences that are represented at the 2008 Montgomery County Fair. GENERAL RULES 1. Entries are limited to active 4-H members in good standing whose names are on file at the Montgomery County Extension Center and who are between 8-18 years of age on January 1, 2008. A member in good standing means one who has attended seven (7) 4-H club meetings by July and a majority of their project meetings. 2. Entries will be received between 8:30 and 11:00 am, Monday, July 14 and remain in place until Sunday, July 20. Check out time is from 11:30 to 1:30 that day. All 4-H exhibits must be checked in and out of the 4-H building by 4-H Extension personnel during established times. (No exceptions will be made). No early removal or checkout of items is permitted. Items, which are not properly checked in or out of the 4-H building, may not be awarded premium money and/or ribbons. Every 4-H exhibitor must turn in a Fair Exhibit Summary Form at check-in with each individual fair exhibit listed before premiums will be issued. 3. Exhibits will be judged using the Danish system. Premiums will be paid according to a point system assigned to each class. Each point will be worth $1.00. Fair officials reserve the right to modify point values on items. The assigned must be used unless approved by the Fair Board. The number of exhibits the county may exhibit per class at the state fair is indicated for each project area. Judges will follow these limits when selecting state fair items. In state fair classes, top blue ribbon exhibits will be selected for state fair and second place blue ribbon exhibits will be selected for Old Threshers. County classes are not eligible for state fair but top blue ribbon exhibits are selected for Old Threshers. 4. A 4-H member may exhibit a maximum of three (3) exhibits for each project in which he/she is enrolled. A project is defined as a number listing as it appears in “The Clover”. Fair classes correspond to projects as listed in “The Clover”. Example: Maximum of three (3) items made by member enrolled in Clothing 1 must enter his/her exhibits in fair class #521. Members exhibiting live animals at the fair may have one (1) exhibit building item or one (1) fleece plus animals exhibited. No live animals in exhibit building. Only two (2) items per 4-H member will be eligible to go to the State Fair. This is to allow more participation by a large number of 4-H members from the county. 5. Items made by 4-H members should reflect the skills they have learned in their 4-H project, the needs and interests of the 4-Her, and quality workmanship. Exhibits must be of blue ribbon quality. Use the 4-H project literature and “The Clover” for ideas and criteria. 4-H members may display only in projects in which they are enrolled in the current 4-H year. Items showcased must be made in the current year and must be the work of the 4-H member submitting the item for their 4-H project and not made for a school project. 6. Tags will be furnished at the Extension Center. Club leaders are responsible for picking up tags for all project members, checking to see they are properly completed and encouraging members to exhibit. All items must have a fair tag securely fastened to the item in a place, which is visible to fairgoers. When an item includes more than one piece, each piece must be labeled with a tag. Be sure to indicate 1 of 2, 2 of 2, etc. If any exhibit consists of more than one part, identify each part. (Examples: jacket and skirt; rocket and rocket launcher; ceramic tea set; mittens, etc., should have an identifying label on each piece). 7. Items are displayed at the risk of the individual 4-H member. The 4-H staff, Extension Centers and Montgomery County Fair are not responsible for loss or damage to items. 8. Notebooks, posters and filmcards systems will be accepted from any project. Youths who show notebooks, posters or file card systems should understand that their items could be touched and examined by fairgoers. 52 9. Where the item list states, “any item made,” the 4-H member may display any items made in that project. This includes notebooks, filecards, photo displays, posters or educational displays. Regardless of project, the following dimensions must be used. Items which do not comply with size or other specifications will not receive a premium or ribbon. Poster – No larger than 14” x 22”; flat only; do not fasten three dimensional items to the poster. Photo Display All photos should be mounted on an 11”x 14” white or off-white matboard, not to exceed 1/8” in thickness either horizontally or vertically. Poster board or foam core board is not acceptable mounting materials. No writing or labels on the matboard. Margins are at the discretion of the photographer. A permanent mount must be made using photographic adhesive. No photos using glass and/or wooden, brass, plastic, frames, etc. Photos can be matted with a single window colored mat if appropriate. To protect exhibits from dust and moisture, it is strongly recommended that photos be placed in a two-gallon zip-lock style bag. Photo stories should consist of no more than 4 photographs. Include Name, Address, and County on back of photo. Educational Display – Must not exceed 11 inches in height, 12 inches in depth (front to back) and 14 inches in width. Must include threedimensional items and stand-alone. (Posters with items taped to them do not qualify as an educational display. Science Fair display boards are too large.) Entomology or Geology Display Boxes – Box must be exactly 18” long and 24” wide and 3 ½ ” deep. Plexiglas or plastic covers are preferred. No handles or knobs. Boxes will be displayed upright in racks. Working Models – These exhibits should show how things work (cutaway-sections of motors or computers) or can be used to help people identify parts such as parts of a motor or computer. Many times these exhibits are considered “hands-on” and can be handled by visitors. Working models should require floor space no larger than 14”x22”. Decorated CakesThe use of forms or pans is recommended. Cake boards should not exceed 1” margin on each side of cake pan or form. Cake should not exceed 13” in height or at the base. Must use Royal icing, Rolled Fondant or commercial product like Dapp only. (No real cakes or butter crème icing or tube/gel icing). When sending a cake to the state fair, send only the top layer of the cake when multi-tiered cakes are made. Large Size State Fair ExhibitsAt the Missouri State Fair, items too large for display in the 4-H Building will not be accepted for display. Determination of items showcased will be left to the discretion of the 4-H Building Superintendent. Photographs of items too large to display, yet receiving champion recognition at the county fair is encouraged. All pictures of projects should not exceed 5x7, should not be mounted on anything, and should not have multiple pictures. The tag should be attached. These photographs will not be returned. A ribbon and premium will be awarded for the photographed item. Electricity Exhibits Sent to the State Fair – Electricity exhibits sent to the State Fair using batteries such as circuit boards should not connect the wires to the battery rather the wires should be taped behind the battery. Another option is to not attach a battery but indicate, “battery goes here”. This is to prevent potential fire hazards at the State Fair. You may have your exhibit working at the county fair. Shooting Sports Exhibits Sent to the State Fair – Shooting Sports exhibits sent to the State Fair should contain no live ammunition and arrow points should be removed.
