the Net, Web Search, Stock Quote, My Email, Today‟s News, More Options, E-Z Guide, Introduction,
Page Highlights, Disable Page Highlights, Enable Link, and Disable Link.
5.1 Surfing and browsing the Net with netECHO
netECHO allows you to explore the vast information on the Internet, without a computer.
netECHO‟s intelligent agent “reads-out” the information on your favorite Web sites and/or news
groups. netECHO offers four means of surfing the Web – Surf by Popular Websites, Surf by
Bookmarked websites, Surf by Interactive Spelling, and Surf by Keypad Entry.
5.1.1 Surf by POPULAR Websites
This option allows you to reach the most frequently accessed Websites. All you need to do is:
Select this option by saying POPULAR WEBSITE or pressing “3”
Say the name of the popular Website
As an example, if you want to go to the CNN Website, the interaction with netECHO would be
as follows:
Say “CNN”
Based on the above input, netECHO will access CNN Web page at http://www.cnn.com and start
reading it out to you. To continue hearing additional websites, simply follow the prompts, or press
#7 to return to the beginning of Surf mode. Otherwise, to exit Surf mode and return to the Main
Menu, simply say, “Main Menu”.
To hear a list of current popular Websites:
Say “List Popular Websites” or press “17” on the keypad.
5.1.2 Surf by BOOKMARKED Websites
This option allows access to Websites that are of interest to you, and you have saved as
bookmarks previously. All you need to do is:
Select this option by saying “Bookmarked Website” or pressing “4”
Say the bookmark number
As an example, if you want to go to the EBAY Website, the interaction with netECHO would
be as follows:
Say 3 (assuming that the Web address for EBAY has previously been saved as
bookmark 3)
Based on the above input, netECHO will access EBay‟s Web page at http://www.ebay.com
and start reading it out to you.
To hear a list of your current bookmarks:
Say “List Bookmarks” or press “16” on the keypad.
Copyright © InternetSpeech Rev 4.2 December 2003 8
5.1.3 Surf by Interactive Spelling
This option allows you to go to any Website by spelling out the desired Website‟s address.
Spelling is interactive. After you say each letter, netECHO confirms it, providing a convenient
opportunity for corrections should that be necessary. Since most Website addresses start
with “http:// www.” and end with “.com”, netECHO “knows” this, and you do not need to
provide this standard prefix or suffix. For a more detailed discussion, see the “More on
Spelling” section.
As an example, if you want to go to the Yahoo Website, the interaction with netECHO would
be as follows:
Select this option by saying INTERACTIVE SPELLING or pressing “0”
Say Y – listen for confirmation - Say A – listen for confirmation - Say H – listen for
confirmation - Say O – listen for confirmation - Say O – listen for confirmation – Say ALL
DONE
Based on the above input, netECHO will access Yahoo‟s Web page at http://www.yahoo.com
and start reading it out to you.
For Web pages that end in suffixes such as “.net”, “.gov”, “.edu”, etc., you need to include
those characters as part of your spelling, prior to the “ALL DONE” command. netECHO‟s
intelligent agent knows that in such cases, the “.com” suffix is not required.
5.1.4 Surf by Keypad Entry
This option is provided as an alternative, for those users who prefer to key-in the letters via
the telephone keypad (using the Phone Keypad Codes shown in the “More on Spelling”
section), instead of spelling them by voice. Please note that you can type a maximum of 20 digits
or maximum of 10 letters at a time. After typing 20 digits or 10 letters at a time, netECHO will ask you
to confirm the letters you have typed.
As an illustration to go to the CNNfn‟s Webpage, the interaction with netECHO, by keypad is
shown here:
Select this option by saying Keypad Entry or pressing “1”
Press 23 (For C) – Press 62 (For N) – Press 62 (For N) – Press 33 (For F) – Press 62
(For N) – Press 99 (For “ALL DONE”)
Notice that the keypad entry is continuous, without the need to wait for a confirmation beep
after each character. When you have completed, press 99 or say, “ALL DONE”.
Based on the above input, netECHO will access CNN‟s Web page at http://www.cnn.com and
start reading it out to you.
Note that, just like in Interactive Spelling mode, netECHO infers the “http:// www.” and “.com”, as
the standard prefix and suffix of most Website addresses. Also, for Web pages that end in suffixes
such as “.net”, “.gov”, “.edu”, etc., you need to include those characters as part of your spelling.
netECHO‟s intelligent agent knows that in such cases, the “.com” suffix is not required. For a more
detailed discussion, see the “More on Spelling” section.
5.2 Searching the Web with netECHO
netECHO also allows you to search for specific information available on the Internet without a
computer. You can search for a word, or words, using a web based search engine. Once the
Copyright © InternetSpeech Rev 4.2 December 2003 9
desired information is found, netECHO “reads-out” the information to you. The Enable Link
command issued from the Main Menu prior to selecting the Search Command allows you to read
through the links found by the search engine. Without the Link Mode enabled prior to the Search,
netECHO continues the read-out, without alerting you about available links (for more details see
WEB SEARCH
- FOLLOW MENU INSTRUCTIONS TO PERFORM
GUIDED SEARCH
the section on Link/No-Link Modes, later in this manual).
Two main modes of searching the Web are offered: a Guided and a Direct Web Search mode.
5.2.1 Guided Web Search mode
Guided Web Search helps you narrow down the search field through several categories of
choices. netECHO will read these choices. When you hear the desired one, select it by
saying, “That One”. Alternatively, you may say the category name. This process is repeated
to further refine the search. Complete either by selecting your final choice, or by spelling out
the search word(s), in a manner similar to Direct Web Search mode, described below.
5.2.2 Direct Web Search mode
To do a direct search, you select the Web Search option from the Main Menu. Ignore the
search category names and spell the search word(s) when prompted. For example if you
are searching for “silicon”, you say:
Say S – pause for beep - Say I – pause for beep - Say L – pause for beep - Say I –
pause for beep - Say C – pause for beep - Say O – pause for beep - Say N – pause for
beep – Say ALL DONE (or press 99, the code for ALL DONE).
netECHO‟s intelligent agent will confirm the desired word(s) to be searched, and send the
appropriate instructions to the search engine. Once the result of the search is available,
netECHO‟s intelligent agent continues, by “reading-out” the results, in summary form. To continue
hearing additional information, simply follow the prompts, or press #7 to return to the beginning of
search mode. Otherwise, to exit Search mode and return to the Main Menu, simply say, “Main
Menu”.
5.3 Stock Quotes with netECHO
netECHO also enables you to obtain stock quotes without the need to access a computer, or to
call your stockbroker, by simply providing the name of stock symbol (also known as ticker
symbol) for the stock or mutual fund desired. Quotes are available 24 hours (and are delayed 15
minutes).
Copyright © InternetSpeech Rev 4.2 December 2003 10
STOCK QUOTE
SAY
- TO HEAR STOCK QUOTES Company Name or Stock Symbol
- TO QUIT STOCK QUOTES I Am Done
To obtain a stock quote with netECHO, simply say the company‟s name or company symbol. As
an example, to obtain a stock quote for IBM, your voice base interaction with netECHO is as
follows:
Say IBM
To continue hearing additional stock quotes, say the name of the next desired company or mutual
fund, otherwise, to exit Stock Quotes and return to the Main Menu, simply say, “I Am Done”.
5.4 e-mail with netECHO
You can access your Web based (Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail) e-mail,POP3 e-mail and other email
accounts. netECHO‟s intelligent agent “reads-out” the text of your e-mail, providing you instant
access to critical information.
In order to read e-mail, you continue to use your existing e-mail account (you do not need a new
e-mail account with InternetSpeech). If you do not already have an e-mail account, our Customer
Service specialists can provide you with a list of choices.
netECHO is compatible with the most popular e-mail formats. To ensure that you are able to
access your account, it is best to confirm with InternetSpeech (usually at the time of subscription)
that your particular e-mail account is compatible with netECHO.
EMAIL
SAY or PRESS
- READ Read My Email 0
- COMPOSE Compose Email 1
- DELETE Delete Email 2
When you select at the Main Menu, netECHO‟s intelligent agent will connect you directly to your
e-mail account. E-mail user or account name and password are not required for each session.
Your netECHO profile remembers these for you, and expedites the e-mail log on process.
When there are new e-mail messages in your e-mail inbox, you will be provided with options for
reading, composing or deleting e-mail. Once an e-mail message has been “read-out” to you,
netECHO offers you the option to reply, reply to all, forward the e-mail to someone else or delete
it. If there are no e-mail messages in your e-mail inbox, the only option offered will be to
compose e-mail. To reply or compose email, just say what you would like to record. Alternatively,
you can type your response by using the Keypad Entry. If you record the message, it will go as a
voice file. If you use Keypad Entry, the email response will go as a text message.
netECHO will then provide the following four ways to address your email message.
1. To spell an email address (interactive spelling), say, “spell email address.”
2. To key-in email address(phone keypad entry) say, “address by key-in”
3. To speak an email address from your list (or Address Book), say, “from the list”
Copyright © InternetSpeech Rev 4.2 December 2003 11
4. To use an email address from a Address Book (or lis), say, “address bookmark.”
You can say List Addressbook to find out what names (or addressbook number) you have in your
address book. In above, options 3 and 4 are same – both uses Address Book or List of names. In
sending an email, you can send to everyone on the address book by saying “every one”.
5.4.1 Setting up email Address Book
You can setup your email Address Book by going to our website at
www.internetspeech.com, clicking the Login button, entering your user id and PIN code, and
following the instructions. You can also setup your email Address Book while using
netECHO by using your voice or keypad.
In sending email from netECHO, if you choose “spell email address” or “address by key-
in”, netECHO will give you an option to save the spelled out email address in the email
Address Book. After completing the spelling of the email address, netECHO will ask you to
say the Last Name of the person you are sending the email to. It will then ask you to spell the
Last Name. Just spell the Last Name as you spell normally i.e. without waiting for a beep
after each letter. netECHO will then ask you for the First Name of the person you are sending
the email to. It will then ask you to spell the First Name. Just spell the First Name as you spell
normally i.e. without waiting for a beep after each letter. netECHO will then ask you which
location you would like to save the email address. Just choose a number between 1 and 50.
netECHO will then store the email address to the selected location.
Alternatively, you can just call our Customer Support to set up your email Address
Book.
Important Note: If you use Interactive Spelling, say “at” for “@” sign. Do NOT spell “at” like
“a alpha” and “t Tango”. Similarly for “.” just say “dot”.
5.5 News
netECHO also allows you to search for specific information available on the Internet. Once
located, netECHO‟s intelligent agent “reads-out” the information to you in a pleasant voice. The
following services are currently available (services options and content will be changed, as
needed, to improve netECHO‟s coverage):

7.0 More on SPELLING
Spelling is one the key features offered by netECHO, as a means to enable quick and easy
access to the Internet via a simple phone. Spelling is needed for netECHO‟s services, which are
not already preset or accessible via a voice or keypad command. Examples of items that you will
be spelling include: Web addresses, stock symbols, items to be searched for, etc. netECHO
offers these convenient alternatives for spelling:
7.1 Interactive Spelling
Spelling is interactive. After you spell each letter, netECHO confirms it, providing a
convenient opportunity for corrections should that be necessary. Since most Website
addresses start with “http:// www.” and end with “.com”, netECHO “knows” this, and you do
not need to provide this standard prefix or suffix. To spell any word, simply say each letter, in
sequence, waiting for a confirmation between letters. For example, to go to CNNfn‟s Web
page, say:
Say C – listen for confirmation - Say N – listen for confirmation – Say N – listen for
confirmation – Say F – listen for confirmation – Say N – Say ALL DONE
Note that:
While the complete Web address is http://www.CNNfn.com it is not necessary to say
the http://www. prefix nor the “.com” suffix – our intelligent agent infers that
There is no need to worry about upper or lower case letters
DOT (for “.”), DASH (for “-“) and SLASH (for “/”) and other commonly used symbols
are part of the recognized vocabulary (see table below).
“Confirmation” means that netECHO repeats each letter, offering an opportunity for
correction.
For Web pages that end in suffixes such as “.net”, “.gov”, “.edu”, etc., you simply need to
include those characters as part of your spelling, prior to the “ALL DONE” command.
netECHO‟s intelligent agent knows that in such cases, the “.com” suffix is not required.

Back Space is used to go back a character during Interactive Spelling and make corrections
to the character if needed. Alternatively 88 can be pressed to go back a character during
Interactive Spelling mode.
You can also mix Keypad entry for a letter with Interactive Spelling. For example, instead of
saying “a”, you can press “21”. Please see the Keypad Entry Section below.
7.2 Interactive Spelling Commands
When necessary to improve voice recognition (e.g. in noisy environments), netECHO allows
you to clarify the letter by using the International Telecommunication Union‟s (ITU) Standard
Phonetic Alphabet.

7.4 Keypad entry:
As an alternative to voice spelling, you can also use the phone‟s keypad to do the
spelling. Spelling out the letters by voice or phone keypad is equivalent to typing a word
(s) or desired Web address, if you were using a computer.

As can be seen, the code for each letter is simply a two-digit position code:
For letters - the first digit indicates the keypad where the letter is located; the second digit
indicates the position on that keypad (first, second, etc.). Note that “Q” and “Z “do not
appear on most phone keypads, but are include here.
For numbers – the first digit indicates the keypad where the number is located, the
second digit is always “0‟
For symbols and specials - the first digit indicates the keypad where the symbol is
located; the second is a unique sequence number. Note that the symbols for DOT,
DASH, SLASH, etc., do not appear on the phone keypads, they appear here, since
netECHO‟s intelligent agent recognizes their codes.
Skip para means skipping to the next paragraph, repeat para means repeating the
current paragraph, previous page means going back to the previous page, and previous
para means repeating the previously read paragraph. Previous Page is defined when
navigating down the links in “Link or Highlights” modes.

As an illustration of spelling by telephone keypad:
Press 23 (For C) – Press 62 (For N) – Press 62 (For N) – Press 33 (For F) – Press 62
(For N) – Press 99 (For “ALL DONE”)
Notice that the keypad entry is continuous without the need to wait for a confirmation beep
between characters. When you have completed, press 99 or say, “ALL DONE”.
Just as in the Interactive Spelling mode, netECHO infers the “http:// www.” and “.com”, as
the standard prefix and suffix of most Website addresses. Also, for WebPages that end in
suffixes such as “.net”, “.gov”, “.edu”, etc., you need to include those characters as part of
your spelling. netECHO‟s intelligent agent knows that in such cases, the “.com” suffix is not
required.
