Statement of Instructional Philosophy - Daniel D. Butler
My responsibility as an instructor is to provide the basic structure and fair evaluative mechanisms
which allow students to be motivated to learn and grow in the academic environment. However,
university learning should be more than this. The goal of university instruction should not be for students
to merely regurgitate the material provided by a specific instructor toward a specific topic. Students from
all levels should be coached and nurtured toward arriving at conclusions on their own. They should be
provided learning opportunities to individually and collectively discover theories, concepts, and
applications. I incorporate hands-on group projects and cases regardless of class level to integrate theory
and concepts with "real world application." I believe all students should be computer literate and require
them to use e-mail, the World Wide Web, word processing, and spreadsheet applications for all courses I
instruct.
It is the collective responsibility of all academics to move toward providing students the wisdom
of "learning for learning sake" and marketable skills. Students' confidence in their ability to make a
difference in their lives and the lives of their fellow man should be nurtured. Consequently, I practice
what I preach in order to make a difference in the lives of the students I touch. All students have the
ability to think for themselves. I voice the belief to students, that only they can make a difference in the
world around them. Each individual has something important to contribute to society, their family, and to
each class. It is the student's choice to sit idle and let others make decisions, or learn to learn what is
important. Each has a responsibility to act for each has been given a tremendous opportunity not
available to everyone domestically or internationally - to learn in a university setting.
It is my responsibility to help students find the theoretical and practical linkage between the topic
at hand, other courses they have taken, and the world environment in which they live. For example,
students often ask why I expect acceptable grammar and spelling in a business class? They ask why I
expect them to apply their English, history, political science, math and science classes in a business class.
To answer these questions, I present students with various scenarios allowing them to discover the inter-
relationship between these courses and the world around them. Ultimately, students learn the importance
of these relationships and begin to have a greater appreciation for their overall education.
Instructors set the tone for the learning environment. Learning and studying on the part of the
student can be as boring or exciting as the instructor desires. In this regard, I try to make learning fun and
exciting even if the topic is difficult or esoteric in nature. I keep a scorecard on the blackboard/overhead
everyday tallying who (the class or me) out-thinks the other in the process leading to conclusions based
on the day's material. I communicate early on that the class should always win since there are more of
them thinking collectively than there is of me. I find this opens up the communication process. As a
result, students know they can share their ideas without the threat of a condescending professor belittling
them. Students grow in knowledge and confidence as they learn from their mistakes and successes, and
they learn to be considerate of others whose ideas differ from their own.
Upon completion of any class I teach, students should: 1) be self-sufficient in the class material;
2) have a better appreciation for the gifts they have to offer the world; and 3) have confidence in their
abilities to be successful in whatever goals they seek provided they are willing to work for these goals.
Without a doubt, I love to be involved with the education process. It is my good fortune to have had the
opportunity to try to make a difference in the lives of students at all levels. I believe I continue to meet
the instructional goals and responsibilities noted above based on my semester teaching evaluations, year-
end performance evaluations, and follow-up with graduates after they leave Auburn University.
