Introductions with name and major.
Chain Name Drills
All of my courses have a Blackboard component. And at the start of every course I give
"bonus points" for those students that post a "Biographical Sketch" of
themselves, which includes their 3 favorite websites and why they are their favorites. I also
post my "Sketch" to serve as a model for them.
The name game
Student Introductions and Goals.
I introduce myself and ten students introduce themselves based on a list of questions.
Intensive Group exercises 1st 2 weeks; require students to send me an email in 1st week of
class
We do small group activity to get to know each other, then rotate to meet everyone in the
room; we do an activity to learn names by pairing the name to an attribute or motion; we do
activities to relate to the subject on day 1 by each offering something on a brainstorming
Students are grouped and asked to solve an answer to a riddle that relates to college.
I have a clinical group of 10 students(8 weeks)x 2. We do not have an entire semester. So
first meeting we do a "getting to know you" (name, marital status, kids, career in
past life).
The name game which helps me to remember most of their names by the end of class.
My students and I fill out a survey, and I read my answers to the class while collecting theirs.
Personal introduction where they student tells us their name and where they are from and
anything else they would like the class to know.
Students interview the person next to them and then introduce that person to the class.

Students tell why they are taking the class and what they want to do in the Discussion Board
on Blackboard.
Ask the students to introduce and talk about their hobbies, thngs they like to do and things

I create index cards with names of famous people, places, and events that are associated
with New Orleans. These index cards come in pairs (e.g. one card says Mardi Gras and its
mate says Rex Parade or one card says famous movie filmed in New Orleans and its mate
says "Interview with a Vampire" or Fats Domino and "Blueberry Hill").
I hand out the cards and each person must search for their match. Then they interview each
other for: name, major and one odd or unusual thing about the person. They then introduce
each other to the class by sharing those 3 items. I participate in this icebreaker as well.
I do the "Pig Personality Profile" on the first day. It loosens the students up and
makes them laugh. They compare their drawings of pigs.
My classes are related to health care - we go around the room and introduce ourselves and
each person states what is their favorite medical show and what allied health profession
they are pursuing.
