Project Description
Exhibit Date: Saturday, November 13, 2010
Time: 10am – 4pm
Prize: TBD
General Description: Using graphic design resources, participants will produce a logo printed
on a poster for the Maritime STEM Fest. Additional resources such as a flyer or postcard may
also be included, but are not required. The final products will be presented at a booth at the
Maritime STEM Fest and competition winners will be selected.
Eligibility
Grade Level: 9-12
Group size: 2-3 individuals/group or one class.
Teacher/Project Leader: Participants must have a teacher or adult project leader that helps in
guiding them through the maritime related project, assists in arrangements for exhibiting the
project at a festival booth, and student transportation on the day of the STEM Fest.
Project Guidelines
1. Entries will produce a logo to for next year’s Maritime STEM Fest. This logo will be used
in all materials associated with the STEM Fest 2011, and the winner will be recognized
for their winning design. Groups may choose to include a flyer or postcard that
demonstrates the logo as used in materials but this step is not required by the
committee.
2. The logo produced by a group should be displayed on a poster to aide in judging the
competition. Each competition group will have a table or booth to display their poster.
3. The Maritime STEM Fest Committee is will consider the following characteristics when
judging entries:
a. Is there a clear link to the “Maritime” theme?
b. Is this logo designed with a general public audience in mind?
c. Does the logo include elements of STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) and
still remain “fun”?
d. Is the logo an original design?
Teacher/Project Leader Guidelines
1. Project Leader must be available on the date of the STEM Fest (November 13, 2010) to
assist students in the setup and operation of the interactive exhibit.
2. Project Leaders/teachers are welcome to submit an entry from an entire class, and are
welcome to support up to 3 submissions (e.g. only three group entries per teacher).
3. Leaders will work with the Maritime STEM Fest committee to organize the group’s
registration and transportation (if needed).
4. Leaders will host at least three out of school time periods with their group(s) to develop
and design the logo that will be presented at the festival.
5. Leaders will send a monthly summary/update of their group’s progress on the project to
the Maritime STEM Fest committee (MaritimeSTEMFest@gmail.com) and notify the
committee in the event of any changes to their registration.
