Rick Steves Italy 2007 by Rick Steves
Let Rick Bring You Italy
All the fabled attractions of Italy are here: the art and architecture of
Rome, the history and religion of Vatican City, the sun-drenched beaches
of the Italian Riviera, the canals of Venice, the hill towns of Tuscany and
Umbria, the lakes and mountains of northern Italy, the fashion of Milan,
and the charming traditions of Palermo in Sicily.
I have done a fair amount of travel and know that a good guide book is
indispensable. I did a fair amount of research and the bookstore and
library and ended up buying the Lonely Planet guide to Italy, a series that
has always been reliable in the past. Then, just before leaving, a friend
strongly recommended the Rick Steves guide. I was familiar with his TV
series (available on DVD) and figured it might be handy. I am glad I
bought it.
This is the best travel book Ive ever used. The information is very well
organized, concise and accurate. This book includes a number of features
that were missing from other travel books that proved extremely useful,
such as:
-A quick summary page of the top attractions in each city, along with
relevant addresses and booking information.
-Simple, hand drawn maps of areas that highlight the essential sights and
eliminate the clutter of a full street map.
-A pull out street map
-Excellent travel tips (pack light!) and information on deals and discounts
What makes this book different is that Rick Steves is not just a
professional traveler, but a real travel journalist. His description of sites
and history is much more readable than the Lonely Planet guide, which I
found tedious in comparison.
I did not stay at any of the hotels he recommended (we used points to stay
at Starwood hotels) but his restaurant recommendations were very good
and we were never steered wrong.
