Crazy in Alabama by Mark Childress
Crazy Is As Crazy Does
Comic and tragic, unique and outlandish, CRAZY IN A LABAMA is the story
of two journeys--Lucilles from Industry, Alabama, to Los Angeles, to star
on THE BEVERLY HILL BILLIES and her 12-year-old nephew Peejoes,
who is about to discover two kinds of Southern justice, and what that
means about the stories hes heard and the people he knows.
A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK
A FEATURED ALTERNATE SELECTION OF THE LITERARY GUILD
This is a whirlwind of a story! It pulls you in instantly and you fall in love
with most of his characters. One of the main events that occur in this
novel is a bit off the wall, but Childress makes it almost believable because
he ties it around other realistic, contemporary events of that time. The
story is written in the South during the civil rights era. He mentions some
highly charged events and words in this novel that might offend many. I
was not offended by it. Rather, I felt sorry for how ignorant so many used
to be (and probably still are) living in the South and other racis t pockets
across the nation. I implore you to look past it and enjoy the novel for what
it is--a good fictional read. He ties a sense of unity of the family, humor,
naivete and adventure together very well around a plot that compels you to
try to find out what happens next. Id like to rent the movie and compare it
to the book. Enjoy!
