Jacksonville community services/resources to combat hunger and food insecurity
that are potential volunteer opportunities for you:
1. The Salvation Army: Senior Citizens. 15 East Church St
   Jacksonville, FL 32202 –
The Salvation Army is a wonderful organization that helps feed people in
need when a disaster occurs, such as the most recent hurricanes that have
devastated the state of Florida. Although this is a valuable service to have,
people who have lost their job, or who have jobs and can’t make ends
meet are not directly assisted, and to me this is a disaster as well. It’s not
           adequate. salvationarmysouth.org
2. The Catholic Charities Bureau, 134 East Church St Jacksonville, Fl 32202
This community resource is of great value in terms of helping the needy
with food and assisting them back on their feet. The drawback is that you
have to be qualified to receive their help. I don’t think you should have to
go through so much red tape and qualifying to get help. I think it’s not
           adequate. http://www.ccbjax.org/networkofcare.html
3. St. Francis Soup Kitchen 134 East Church St
   Jacksonville, FL 32202-
This church combats hunger by feeding many people that are without
food. They have most recently expanded their services to help cloth the
needy as well. At present, they have been “feeding more than 900
participants during their operational hours.” I believe this service is
wonderful, but it doesn’t put a dent in the number of people whose hunger
           insecurity needs to be met.

4. Jacksonville's Children's Commission -126 West Church Street, Suite 201
   Jacksonville, Florida 32202
This program provides a nourishing meal for children in need. This is a
vital program for the children, because they need nourishment when they
are in their growing years. I believe this is a prospering resource for kids
and it appears to be growing.

5. Community and Senior Center Services – Mary Singleton Senior Citizens Center,
   150 East 1st St
   Jacksonville, FL 32206
This is a great center for the elderly, which offers transportation to the
facility. They Center also offers a free meal, which can be helpful for the
elderly who may be living on a fixed income. The services at the facilities
appear to be adequate for the assistance that is given.

6. Pride in Action Community Services, Inc. 704 N Lincoln Ct
   Jacksonville, FL 32209
Pride in action is a helpful resource for individuals who may not be able to
make ends meet. I believe it is adequate in helping to supply the health

                                                                                       1
care that may be needed by individuals in need. Free snacks are offered to
children, but as far as eliminating or combating food insecurity it only
does a small portion of this, although it is helpful.

7. City Rescue Mission 426 South McDuff Ave. Jacksonville, Florida 32254.
This program offers help food and shelter to the homeless. They also offer
referrals and education to the participants. I think the services are
             adequate.

8. American Red Cross -751 Riverside Ave
     Jacksonville, FL 32204
The Red Cross has been an advocate in helping to keep the elderly
nourished. They are presently participating in a program to bring attention
to the Meals on Wheels program for the Elderly. I believe this is an
adequate resource to combat food insecurity in the elderly populations.

The meals on wheel program, participates with many senior centers to
supply the elderly with a free nutritional meal. The meals appear to be
nutritionally adequate and this appears to be a very good program.
