Welcome to the Eat Well Guide!

Eat Well Guide® is a free online directory of thousands of family farms, restaurants, and other

outlets for fresh, locally grown food. Originally a database of sustainably-raised meat and dairy

producers, its listings have expanded to include farmers' markets, CSA programs, partner

organizations, water-conscious ratings and vegetarian eateries. Visitors can search by location,

keyword or category to find good food, download customized guides, or plan a trip with the

innovative mapping tool Eat Well Everywhere. Eat Well is also home to the free print and online

book Cultivating the Web: High Tech Tools for the Sustainable Food Movement.

We do not have the time nor money to travel the show ring circuit. We don't maintain cows that need

a feed bucket in order to raise a calf. We intend to produce honest breeding stock that can be

profitable for our buyers as well as ourselves. Therefore, our cattle are pasture raised and only fed

purchased feed during times of extreme weather conditions.

Is it an advantage for you to purchase seedstock from producers that may "performance test" the

animals in an environment that is more strict than your operation? Undoubtedly, the answer is yes; if

you buy a bull from a breeder that has animals on "full feed"(i.e. loads of grain), you may discover

some faults when you actually put the animal out on pasture.

Larry and Jacque, the proprietors behind Berry Creek Farm, are growers o'naturale. They have

peaches, table grapes, strawberries and blackberries. Yes, they also grow veggies from A-Z. With

8 acres in production using pesticide-free methods they stay pretty busy. One of the keys for them

is the use of chicken manure from their flock of 100 heritage breed chickens for fertilizer. Even

before they had heard of Animal Welfare Approved they were using humane practices raising and

handling their birds. It was a perfect fit, and they ended-up being the first poultry farmers in

Oklahoma to be certified by Animal Welfare Approved.

Larry grew up on a typical industrial method farm, but now as an adult chooses to work with nature.

At their farmer's market customers understand the value of animal welfare and offer simple

comments like "Thank you for your work”. It is invaluable for Larry and Jacque to “state the facts”

by displaying their Animal Welfare Approved certification, and their customers continue to appreciate

the hard work they put into raising their flock.

We are a family owned and operated multi-generation farm dedicated to the production of all natural

meat. Our poultry, eggs, beef and pork are the finest tasting, most healthy meat that is available. All

of our animals are cared for by one of the six members of our family.

They are treated with dignity and respect from birth to harvest. They have fresh air, clean water,

sunshine, protection from bad weather and room to roam. The "grocery store" poultry, beef and pork

are fed whatever is cheapest and they are crammed into pens containing thousands of animals

where they barely have enough room to move about.

<

Our beef starts with the best tasting breed in the industry, Angus. We use 100% registered Angus

Bulls selected for their desirable carcass traits bred to Angus cows. This breeding produces a

healthy, vigorous calf that will yield a very desirable carcass. The calves are born on our farm

and grow up on a diet of their mothers milk, grass hay (grown and harvested by us), grass, and

clover. They are weaned from their mother when they are 5-600 pounds and placed on a separat

e pasture. Here they are allowed to graze freely and introduced to a grain diet. Our grain is the

finest, corn, ground soybeans, cottonseed meal, and minerals that we can find. At one year old their

ration of grain is increased to promote growth and inter-muscular fat (this makes the steaks juicy.) At

15 months of age, they are harvested. They are taken to a Federal USDA inspected facility and are

processed to your specs. They will arrive nicely packaged and labeled with the cut of meat, weight,

and date of processing.

Page 18

oklahoma guide: farmers

The pork is grown much the same. They are artificially inseminated with the leading sires in the

swine industry. They are bred for leanness and muscle, and they pass this on to their offspring. This

yields a lean, healthy meat that is flavorful and juicy. T

he ham is wonderful, the sausage is lean and tasty, and the bacon actually has more meat than fat!

They too are fed an all natural grain diet of corn & ground soybeans, and fed in the same roomy

"pigpen" along with their siblings.

Our Pastured Poultry is raised in floorless portable pasture shelters that are moved daily. This

allows them to ingest copious amounts of fresh greens along with their regular ration of locally

grown grains. We use Joel Salatins model from Polyface Farm to grow our birds. We grow the

Cornish Cross breed that delivers a wonderful firm, juicy, and delicious meal free from antibiotics,

hormones, and steroids. They are processed in a USDA inspected facility for your safety.

Our brown egg layers are raised in a portable “egg mobile.” They are protected from predators by a

high tech electric net. This allows them access to ¼ acre paddocks to freely graze the grass, which

raises the Omega's and CLA content of the eggs, making them actually good for you! Eggs are

gathered daily, washed, candled, and packaged under a USDA permit to do so. These eggs have a

beautiful deep colored yolk that actually stand up above the white. The yolk is easily separated by

hand without breakage. They are highly sought after by chefs for their great taste.

Our four children eat from the same group of animals that your family does, so you can ensure that

the quality and wholesomeness will be in every piece of meat we produce.

Heavens Little Acres has been operating as a goat dairy farm for 9 and a half years. Raw milk and

cheese are sold directly from the farm. Pasteurization is available by request, but most customers

prefer the fresh raw milk. Skim milk and cream is available for a slightly higher cost than the regular

milk, due to the labor put into the process.

Aside from goat dairy products, the farm also raises fresh, pastured eggs and pork. Hogs are sold

butcher-ready, so customers must tell the butcher how they want the meat cut beforehand. Pork is

available in whole, half, and fourth cuts. Chickens are free to run around the farm and actually do a

great job at keeping the yard clean. All-natural, chemical free tomatoes are available in season.

HLA Country Farm is a small raw milk dairy farm where we are striving to supply the local

community with fresh natural raw milk We are currently milking Jersey cows and Nubian goats.

We raise standard size Jersey cattle. The reason we chose Jersey cattle is for the high butterfat

content in the raw milk. We want to offer the richest and highest quality milk. As most dairy breeds

far surpass the Jersey in quantity the Jersey gives the highest quality. The Nubian goats milk is

comparable to the Jersey milk for the butterfat content.

all-natural way. Our layer hens are free to forage on pesticide-free pastures each day, and then are

returned safely each night to their portable coops with protection from predators.

Our broilers are also raised all naturally. None of our birds will ever receive hormones, medications,

steroids, or have exposure to any non-organic material.

We support local agricultural providers and are so very thankful for those consumers who support

us!

We work hard with our birds to ensure that they have a wonderful quality of life, and are also cared

for so that the eggs, roasters, and broilers that our customers will enjoy are healthy, delicious, and

generated by livestock who have been treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve! They

are gifts to us, and we hope that you will feel the same way!!

Orders can be placed online, and look for a full online store coming soon. Sometimes their products

scripture or plants that grow in modern day Israel. Herbs and produce are GMO-free and fertilized

naturally. Coming soon is a wool mill that will be used to process the 300+ pounds of raw wool that

the sheep produce. The wool will no longer be leaving the country to be processed, but will stay

"We're growing a grassroots network uniting Oklahoma folks interested in sustainably produced,

locally grown food. We bring the farmer's market to your front door. When you spend a dollar in a

grocery store, perhaps 10 cents gets to a farmer, but at the Oklahoma Food Cooperative 100 cents

out of every dollar goes to the farmers. Our dollars do double duty. Not only do we get great food,

but we also support grassroots economic opportunity for our neighbors in rural Oklahoma."

Back in 1980, Whole Foods started out with one small store in Austin, Texas. Today, we're the

world's leader in natural and organic foods, with more than 270 stores in North America and the

United Kingdom.

Who are we? Well, we seek out the finest natural and organic foods available, maintain the strictest

quality standards in the industry, and have an unshakeable commitment to sustainable agriculture.

Around here, we often talk about our mission in terms of Whole Foods - Whole People - Whole

Planet. Basically, we think these elements all play a huge role in our success.

Whole Foods - We search for the highest quality, least processed, most flavorful and natural foods

possible because we believe that food in its purest state - unadulterated by artificial additives,

sweeteners, colorings and preservatives - is the best tasting and most nutritious food there is.

Whole People - Our people are our company. They are passionate about healthy food and a healthy

planet. They take full advantage of our decentralized, self-directed team culture and create a

respectful workplace where people are treated fairly and are highly motivated to succeed.

Whole Planet - We are committed to helping take care of the world around us, and our active

support of organic farming and sustainable agriculture helps protect our planet. And while we assist

our global neighbors through our Whole Planet Foundation's micro-lending operations, we also step

out the back door of each of our stores to support food banks, sponsor neighborhood events and

donate to local non-profit groups.
