celebration event will be held
Wednesday, February 17 at the
University of Arizona Centennial Hall.
Dr. Hooker to receive
AAGT Lifetime
Achievement Award
The Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented
(AAGT) will be honoring Dr. Sharon Hooker with
a Lifetime Achievement Award at its AAGT
Annual Conference Luncheon, Thursday,
February 4, 2010.
High school
transition meetings
Parent meetings were held at each of the middle schools
regarding 8th Grade Digital Scholars and Transition to
High School.
Approximately 300 parents attended the five meetings to
introduce families to the Digital Scholars program and
begin preparation for high school.

at MathMovesU Day
500 Sunnyside District middle
school students attended
MathMovesU Day January 14 at the
University of Arizona, sponsored
by Raytheon. This annual event,
which aims to stimulate student
interest in math, science and
technology, included an
opportunity for students to build
their own telescopes.
$5,600 grant for SUSD
Special Olympics athletes
Ocotillo Elementary teacher Anne Hillman secured a
$5,600 grant from the Qwest Family and Work
Development Fund. Grant money will be used to pay for
80 sports physicals for the district’s Special Olympics
athletes as well as CPR/first aid training for all Special
Olympics volunteers and lifeguard training for three
volunteers.
Drexel receives $2,500 grant
from Home Depot
Drexel Elementary has received a $2,500 gift
card grant from The Home Depot for their eco-
friendly projects which include desert rainwater
harvesting and going "green" by creating
organic rich compost.
Los Ranchitos marks 100th day
with 100 years
Several schools marked the 100th day which occurred
on Jan. 19. Average Daily membership is based on the
average of attendance for the first 100 days of the
school year. At Los Ranchitos, teachers and sisters
Connie Salgado and Wendy Fierros invited their 100-
year-old grandmother to visit with students.
Challenger
student quilt at
Tucson Quilt Fiesta
Challenger Middle School teacher Roberta Oliver and
members of her 2008 8th-grade math class created a quilt
as part of their curriculum on transformational geometry in
which they learned about unit designs, translations
(slides), and reflection and rotational symmetry. The quilt,
entitled “Challenger’s Fence,” was on display at the Tucson
Quilt Fiesta this past weekend,.
Aid for Haiti
Five Sunnyside District schools are coordinating donation
drives for earthquake victims in Haiti. Donations will be
taken to Tucson-based World Care for distribution. You may
drop your donations off at the following schools during
regular school hours: Challenger, Lauffer, Liberty, Mission
Manor, and Sierra. Additionally, Drexel Elementary School
is collecting donations for UNICEF in order to purchase a
temporary school classroom for 40 students in Haiti.
AASA National
Conference on Education
February 11 – 13, 2010, Phoenix Convention Center
SUSD is one of 18 districts invited to present in
the AASA National Conference on Education’s
District and School Showcase.
Additionally, Dr. Isquierdo will be honored by
eSchool News as one of ten Tech-Savvy
Superintendents in the nation at the conference
luncheon February 11.
