nce upon a time there were verbs. They lived in a small town
called very simply – Simple Town. The town was so small that there was only one
square and two narrow curvy streets in it. One of the streets was called Past
Street and the other – Present Street. The houses in those streets were small and
lopsided and the verbs that lived there were so weak and helpless that they could
neither ask any questions nor make any negatives. Their life was miserable and
boring. On the contrary, the houses in Central Square were large and beautiful
and the verbs who lived there were very strong and powerful. They always asked
lots of questions and denied everything they liked. Everybody in the town knew
their names. They were Mr. Am, Mr. Is, Mr. Are, Mr. Was and Mr. Were, five
mighty brothers and also Mr. Can, Mr. Could, Mr. May, Mr. Might and Mr.
Must, five best friends. They ruled the town and nobody dared disobey them. But
one day three brawny and courageous verbs came to the town and everything
changed. They helped the feeble verbs to ask questions and make negatives. They
were called Do, Does and Did. Do and Does helped the verbs from Present Street
and Did helped the verbs from Past Street. Since then all the weak verbs in that
town have had the ability to make questions and negatives with the help of the
auxiliary verbs Do, Does and Did.
