C3M 2003 Conference General Q&A
Q: e-mail spell check error reporting cannot find dictionary
"Cannot locate the dictionary files"
- happens for everyone all the time
A: Most likely missing or corrupt GoldMine dictionary files.
(Dict.* files in main GoldMine folder)
Recommend installing new GoldMine (using gm5setup.exe) into a temporary
location, then copy over all dict.* files into production GoldMine folder. Delete
temporary GoldMine install when finished.
Q: when trying to run letters (via AP) fields nested too deeply error
- one given letter w/variable paragraphs (APP1 letter)
A: FrontRange-specific research unveiled nothing. General Internet-based research
identified several Microsoft support documents. The issue appears to be related to the
version of Word being used. In particular, what service pack has been applied to the
given version? Two different Microsoft support documents appear to address this issue:
Q220250 - WD2000 Error Message Fields Are Nested Too Deeply in Mail Merge
214598 - WD97 Merge to Printer Causes Fields Nested Too Deeply Error
Q: when merging letters (outside APs) with variable paragraphs
Error! Unknown op code for conditional.
Error message is in letter (where condition should be).
1. Encountered when selecting merge & edit.
2. Selecting Print works OK!
Appears to apply to all documents, at all times, for all users.
A: FrontRange-specific research unveiled nothing. General Internet-based research only
identified information of a very low-level programming nature (e.g. other encounters of
this same error when doing programming/development with Visual C++, etc.).
Suspect the issue may be related to one of the following:
1. Version (service pack applied?) of Word in use by everyone.
2. Version of GoldMine’s Link to Word (GMLinkInstaller.exe /
gmlink.dot) in use by everyone.
Suggest making sure you’re using the latest version of GoldMine’s Link to Word
and finding out if any service packs are available from Microsoft for the version
of Word currently in use.
Q: Automated Process: assigner track does not put them onto a proper track
start term (key2) (entry term)
student type (key3)
some: student status (key1)
A: Difficult to determine without hands-on research, but have seen this symptom
elsewhere, on a very limited basis.
Suspect the issue may be related to one of the following:
Subtle design flaw or bug in GoldMine.
Database corruption, in particular on the CONTSUPP table, which keeps track of
which APs are attached to which contact records, or with the other tables used in
the criteria that determines which APs get attached to which records.
Not as the preferred proactive solution, but as an acceptable reactive workaround,
suggest periodically running a SQL query to identify any records that exhibit this
characteristic. (See the associated listing of SQL queries developed at the
conference for any “starter” SQL queries that should meet this need.)
Q: Word Link errors: cannot save as a GoldMine link document
when merge & edit, when saving document, get error message
. Do you wish to save GMLINK.DOT?
. Do you wish to update linked fields?
A: Two practical solutions:
1. Make sure you are using the latest version of GoldMine’s Link to Word
(GMLinkInstaller.exe / gmlink.dot).
2. One of the more recent Microsoft Word service packs introduces the new
prompt about updating linked fields. C3M’s web site already has a posted
solution to this whereby you must add a single, simple registry entry to each
PC, thus telling Word to no longer prompt about updating links.
Q: When logging in, unable to open synchronization files
- index missing or corrupt
A: Occasionally indicates file or index corruption. However, most likely is indicative of
some sort of environmental problem. Slow performing or bogged down network traffic
can cause GoldMine, and other network-based applications, to have problems accessing
or opening certain files. As long as you can eventually get in, then this is most likely a
temporary or intermittent problem related to network sluggishness of some sort.
Q: Using “Lesser or Equal” (key1) key1)) key1) key1)="Prospect","I'm a prospect!","I am not a
prospect!")>>
Use GoldMine’s dBase Expression Tester to test dBase expressions before
inserting them into your e-mail template. Remember: You must have MASTER rights to
invoke the dBase Expression Tester, which is invoked via CTRL-SHIFT-D.
