WLANS - THE FUTURE HAS STARTED

The ability to send information globally with high mobi-
lity and capacity is no longer beyond the reach of indi-
viduals or corporations. As mobile telephone usage
grows, many users demand the ability to transmit and
receive data as well as speech.

Wireless Networks for data transmission, the so called
Wireless Local Area Networks have been in discussion
for many years, but only since the publication of the
802.11b standard and transmission rates of
11MBit/second has the vision become a reality. This
reality has enabled private individuals, private compa-
nies and global enterprises to benefit from wireless con-
nectivity.

Many Hotels, Airports, Exhibition Centres and Train
Stations are already equipped with WLANs, providing
flexible, broadband services for guests and workers
alike. These so called "Hot Spots" are built upon a type
of radio base station, and enable access to the fixed
network resources.

Many applications of WLANs are possible: Access to
important information or data during a meeting, on the
production line or during a service call leverages custo-
mer service and promotes efficiency. Many Hospitals
utilise WLANs, enabling fast and mobile access to
patient records by Doctors, Nurses and technicians.
Due to the very low transmit power, WLAN systems are
often used in intensive care stations without disturbing
sensitive medical equipment.

WLANs can also be utilised for Outdoor applications,
with high gain antennas, separate buildings can be
easily connected to the fixed network. Cost effective
andergroand solutions can also be rapidly deployed.

The regulation authority has released the 5GHz fre-
quency band for WLAN use, which allows a connectivi-
ty speed in excess of 54MBits.

PLANNING AND INSTALLING WLANS

Optimisation with Antenna Technology


The planning and installation of Wireless LANs is a rou-
tine process for established IT contractors and system
integrators. Network enhancement can be enabled by
the targeted exchange of standard antennas for optimi-
sed replacements. Where long link distances, security
improvements, optimised performance, or site aesthetics

To be able to cover the different requirements of WLAN users, HUBER+SUHNER offers a wide portfolio of Omni and

For many 11 MBit applications the standard Access Point with the standard low-gain omni antenna is a suitable solution.

For greater distances our optional antennas with increased transmit and receive gain should be utilised. These are availa-
ble with various directional patterns, and are suitable for use with the majority of access points working in the 2.4GHz or
5GHz range. The challenges posed by different building characteristics, the required range and transmission quality can
be met with the selection of the right antenna.

HUBER+SUHNER has a wide portfolio of existing 5GHz antennas for future 54MBit applications.

The RF interconnect path between the antenna and the access point is critical, using low cost or poorly manufactured
cable and connectors can quickly eliminate any advantage that the antenna gain allows.

In todays Wireless LAN networks, established flexible coax cables are used (RG 214, RG 223 or RG 316). As an alterna-
tive to the RG variants, HUBER+SUHNER can offer a full range of Enviroflex coaxial cables. These deliver the same electri-
cal performance as RG types, although they are halogen free and environmentally friendly. We recommend the use of
high quality interconnections to further improve system performance and maximise the benefits of Antenna replacement.
Complete cable assemblies prevent common failures often introduced through dirt or moisture when terminating on-site.
For outdoor systems, it is considered best practice to protect connector terminations with self-amalgamating tape or pro-
prietary waterproofing material.

LIGHTNING / OVER VOLTAGE PROTECTION

Outside of the correct antenna type for a particular WLAN application, many high quality RF components are available to
protect the network from Lightning or over voltage. In many cases damages are caused through poor or faulty installation!

free, broadband units (2.4 - 5.9 GHz) available, does not
support DC injection.

Principle of Operation
Signals within a defined frequency band are transmitted
through the device in both directions. For signals outside of
this band, the device appears as "Earth" and conducts
them to groand. This protection devices operates in a simi-
lar manner to a filter.

Principle of Operation
All frequencies up to 5.9 GHz are transmitted through the

AP                         Access Point. Base station providing a connection to a Wireless LAN through a defined radio cell.
