Who should take the IELTS test?

Why do I need to take the IELTS test?



IELTS assesses your English language ability. A good score (usually 6.0 and above) is an entry

What is Computer-based IELTS (CB IELTS)

CB IELTS is a computer-based version of IELTS. It consists of Listening, Reading and Writing tests. To

maintain our personal approach, all IELTS Speaking tests will still be conducted face-to-face. The CB

IELTS is being offered once each month at British Council, New Delhi. Please note that CB IELTS is only

available in the Academic module.

How much does the IELTS test cost?

The fee for IELTS test is Rs 7200. We donot charge any extra amount on credit card payments.

How can I prepare for the test?

How often can I take the IELTS test?



From 1 May 2006 the policy on candidates re-taking IELTS has been amended. The restriction on re-

taking IELTS within 90 days has been removed and candidates will be able to repeat the test whenever

they wish.

It should be noted however that IELTS scores are not substantially improved merely by taking the test on

multiple occasions. To significantly improve a score it is necessary to engage in further study of a serious

nature. Gain score studies carried out under the IELTS funded research programme indicate that scores

are unlikely to improve dramatically without extensive English language tuition in the interim.

How and when will I get my results?

Results are declared in 13 days. You can get your results by courier to your home, and at no extra cost on

our website and by sms on your mobile. Notice to Candidates. IELTS results for South India are sent by

speed post.

How are the scores processed?



All IELTS marking takes place at the test centre by trained markers and examiners. Markers are trained to

understand the IELTS marking policy and are required to demonstrate that they are marking to standard

before they are allowed to mark Listening and Reading papers. Markers are re-tested every two years to

ensure that their marking remains up to standard. Systematic monitoring and double marking of a

proportion of answer sheets is carried out at each administration.

What do I need to bring with me to the test?

You need to bring your passport, hall ticket and stationery for all the modules of the test. If, you have

registered online then you also need to bring a colour passport-sized photograph on the day of the test.

Who owns the test?



The IELTS test is jointly owned by The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and University of Cambridge-

ESOL Examinations.

What is the Test Format?

All candidates are tested in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same

Listening and Speaking Modules. There is a choice of Reading and Writing Modules, where a candidate

can either opt for Academic or General Training Module.

The first three Modules-Listening, Reading and Writing-must be completed in one day. The Speaking

Module may be taken, at the discretion of the test centre, either seven days before or after the other three

modules.

Which Module should I sit for, Academic or General Training?



The Academic Reading and Writing Modules assess whether a candidate is ready to study or train in the

medium of English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. Admission to undergraduate and

postgraduate courses is based on the result of these Modules. The General Training Reading and Writing

Modules are not designed to test the full range of formal language skills required for academic purposed,

but emphasize basic survival skills in a broad social and educational context. General Training is suitable

for candidates who are going to English speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to

undertake work experience or training programmes not at degree level, or for immigration purpose to

Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

It is the responsibility of the candidate to inform the test centre whether they wish to take the Academic or

General Training Modules. Centres are not responsible for providing this information. The general

Training module is not offered at all test administrations. It must be noted that it may not be possible to

change module later or on the day of the test.

Is there any age limit for IELTS?

IELTS is nor recommended for candidates under the age of 16

Can IELTS be taken as an alternate to TOEFL?

YES, over 544 US institutions recognise IELTS and accept either IELTS or TOEFL for admission to award

Can I retest only for the module where I did not score well instead of repeating the whole test?

IELTS provides a profile of a candidate's English proficiency at a given time. It provides not only an

indication of ability in a particular module but also an indication of overall ability. This would not be

possible if modules were not taken at the same time. Stakeholders require an indication of proficiency at a

given time. Stake holder have expressed a preference for full re-testing to gain an accurate assessment of

a candidate's language proficiency. Therefore a candidate will have to re-take the full test and cannot re-

take a specific module

For how long is a test result valid?



There are a number of variables affecting the length of time over which an IELTS score remains valid. As

a general rule it is recommended that a Test Report Form (TRF), that is more than two years old should

only be accepted as evidence of present level of ability if accompanied by proof that a candidate has

actively maintained or tried to improve their English language proficiency.

How soon can I repeat the test?

From 1 May 2006 the policy on candidates re-taking IELTS has been amended. The restriction on re-

taking IELTS within 90 days has been removed and candidates are able to repeat the test whenever

they wish. Candidates will still be asked to indicate on their application form whether they have taken the

test before. This information will appear on the Test Report Form and will only be used for monitoring

IDP:IELTS Australia Test Centre Planet EDU administers tests, as per a pre-defined calendar. Please

refer to the National Test Dates for test dates and test cities. Please note that new cities are added on a

regular basis

How can I register for the IELTS test?



You can register for the IELTS test in any of the following manner;

 On-line on through the website and pay the test fee by credit card (Master / VISA), and get instant

confirmation of your reservation. This is the most convenient way to book your IELTS test

What is the test fee and how do I pay?



 Rs. 7,200/-(Rupees Seven Thousand Two Hundred only), payable by Demand Draft, drawn in

favour of ' IELTS India Project ', Payable at New Delhi

The fee is subject to change.

Can I pay for the test fee by cheque or cash?

No. Payment of Test Fee by cheque or cash will NOT be acceptable. You should never pay cash to

anybody towards payment of IELTS test fee. If you do so, you will do it at your own risk and cost.

Can I get Practice Material?



Yes, practice material and specimen kits are available. Please click here to view and purchase your

practice material on-line. The material purchased on-line will be dispatched to you by courier (within

India). Alternately, you can visit the nearest test centre office or Input node and purchase your copy over

the counter.

What are Input Nodes and where can I find them?



Input Nodes are select Training Institutes, Colleges, Migration Agents, Student counseling centers etc.,

Can I withdraw my application for the test?



You can withdraw your application to appear for the IELTS test. An applications for withdrawal /

cancellation must reach the centre in writing along with the original receipt of payment of test fee.

The withdrawal administrative charge will be Rs. 1,800/-(Rupees One Thousand Eight Hundred only),

which will be deducted from the test fee paid by the applicant if the application for such withdrawal is

received 5 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE TEST DATE, and the balance Rs. 5,400/-(Rupees Five Thousand

Four Hundred only) will be refunded to the applicant. (The fee is subject to change).

Requests received, LESS THAN 5 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE TEST DATE will NOT BE ENTERTAINED

and NO REFUND would be possible. The decision of the test centre, would be final and binding on the

applicant.

All refunds will be processed and sent within 30 days of the examination date originally booked for.

Can I change test dates or request to postpone sitting the test?

A request for shifting of test date (i.e. postponement or preponement) to another date must reach the

centre in writing and AT LEAST 5 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE TEST DATE, ORIGINALLY BOOKED. An

administrative charge, of Rs. 1,800/-(Rupees One Thousand Eight Hundred Only), would be payable by

the applicant, which must be paid along with the application for shifting of date. The fee must be paid by

Demand Draft drawn in favour of "IELTS India Project", payable at New Delhi.

The allotment of the next date of test would be at the sole discretion of the test centre.

However, NO REQUESTS WOULD BE ENTERTAINED after the cut-off period i.e. LESS THAN 5

WEEKS PRIOR TO THE TEST DATE. The decision of the centre, would be final and binding on the

applicant.

What happens if I am unable to appear for the test?



In the event a registered candidate fails to appear for the IELTS test, the candidate will be treated as a 'No

Show' candidate. Please note, no refunds will be possible for no shows.

What happens if I could not attend the test due to some unavoidable circumstances?

Under normal circumstances, you will be treated as a "No Show" candidate. However, there are some

special circumstances under which your application may be considered with some conditions. Click here

to download the policy guidelines / terms and conditions and form for such special circumstances.

However, please be informed that the acceptance of your form is subject to approval by the test centre,

whose decision will be final and binding.

What can I do if I am un-happy with my results?



You may apply for an enquiry on results (EoR) procedure within six weeks of test date, using a prescribed

form. Click here to download the EoR application form. Please note there is fee of Rs. 5,550/-(Rupees

Five Thousand Five Hundred and Fifty only), which must be paid prior to the processing of the appeal, i.e.

along with the application. The fee must be paid by Demand Draft drawn in favour of "IELTS India

Project", Payable at "New Delhi".

Are answer sheets shown to the candidates when they opt for EoR / Re-mark?

No. IELTS materials are confidential and past papers are not released to candidates. The IELTS partners

reserve the right to re-use materials as appropriate after due course of time. IELTS is not a diagnostic test

and little would be gained by analyzing errors. Moreover all IELTS tests are discrete and items are not

repeated. Weaknesses in particular areas of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking should be

addressed through preparatory courses.

What if I lose my Test Report Form / Result?



At any time within two years of your test administration, you can apply to the centre where you took the

test for further copies of the Test Report Form (TRF). As desired by the test centre, you may also be

required to file a copy of lost complaint with the Police or any other supporting document (as advised by

the test centre), before your request can be processed. There will be a small administrative charge for this

service.

What if I need additional TRF's to be sent to Institutions?



IELTS scores can be verified by recognizing institutions on-line. Click here to learn more about this on-line

However, you may request for additional TRF to be dispatched directly the by the test centre to the

recognising institution / body. There is NO CHARGE for the additional TRF, but the candidate will have to

pay a dispatch charge of Rs. 1,000/-if the candidate wishes to order dispatch by Courier or Rs. 250/-if the

dispatch is by Registered Post

What is the format of the test?

The test has four parts:

i) Listening-30 minutes ii) Reading-1 hour iii) Writing-1 hour iv) Speaking-13-15 minutes

The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are all taken on the same day. The Speaking test can take place

upto seven days before or after the other papers. It is usually within one day of the Listening, Reading and

Writing tests at British Council India.

How long is the IELTS qualification valid?



This depends on the receiving institution. Two years’ validity is recommended.

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of

candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. It covers

the four language skills-listening, reading, writing and speaking.

IELTS has two modules : General Training and Academic. The General Training module is usually taken

by people who want to emigrate, and the Academic module is taken by people who want to study abroad.

It is essential that you check with the receiving country or institution to find out which module you need to

take. It is your responsibility to choose the right module.

PURPOSE OF IELTS



If you're planning to go abroad, to undertake further study, to undertake non-academic training or work

experience, to emigrate or if you simply want to test your real English ability, then IELTS, the test of real

English communicative ability, will ensure that you have the right level of English for your needs.

FORMAT OF THE EXAM

Candidates are tested in listening, reading, writing and speaking. All candidates take the same Listening

and Speaking Modules. There is a choice between Academic and General Training in the Reading and

Writing Modules.

The total test time, excluding the speaking test, is two hours and 45 minutes. Your speaking test may be

on the same day as the other parts, or on a different day.

TEST SCORES

Band scores are recorded on a Test Report Form, showing overall ability

 We do not accept applications by e-mail, fax or phone.

 As seats are on a first come first served basis, we recommend that you register two weeks in

advance. To check for the availability of seats for your preferred test date, please contact your

nearest British Council office.

 If you would like your results-up to a maximum of five (5) copies-to be sent to universities free of

charge then please include the relevant addresses on your application form. This service can only

be offered free at the time of registering for the exam or on the day of the exam.

 IELTS is not recommended for candidates under the age of 16.

 Please ensure that you give a courier serviceable address on the application form.

 A valid passport is the only document which is acceptable in India for IELTS registration.

Half band scores



From 1 July 2007, we're making a small but important change which will make IELTS Band Scores more

informative. Scores for each part of the test will still be reported on the scale from 1 to 9, but now the

Writing and Speaking tests will be reported in whole or half bands in the same way as the Reading and

Listening tests.

1. What can the candidate bring into the examination room?



Only pens, pencils and erasers. Correction fluid must not be used. You must leave anything which

you do not need, or which is not allowed, either outside the examination room, or as instructed by the

supervisor. Mobile phones and pagers must be switched off and placed with personal belongings in

the area designated by the supervisor. Any candidate who does not switch off their phone/pager, or

who retains one in their possession, will be disqualified.

2. Is the IELTS test completed in one day?

The Listening, Reading and Writing components of the test are always completed immediately after

each other and in this same order with no schedule break. The Speaking test can be taken up to 7

days either before or after the test date.

3. What kind of accents can be heard in the Listening and Speaking tests?

As IELTS is an international test, a variety of English accents are used in both of these examinations.

4. Does the listening tape provide the candidate with necessary instructions and pauses?

Yes. At the beginning of the test, candidates receive instructions and hear a sample question. Next,

candidates read Section One questions and then listen to Section One and answer the questions on

the question paper as they listen. The same procedure follows for Sections Two, Three and Four. This

takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. In the following final ten minutes, candidates transfer

their answers onto the answer sheet.

5. Is there a similar period of ten minutes at the end of the Reading test for the transfer of

answers?



No. The Reading test is one hour, and you must write all your answers on the answer sheet in this

time.

6. Can I complete the Listening and Reading answer sheet in pen?



No. The answer sheet is scanned by a computer which cannot read pen.

7. Can I make some notes on the Listening and Reading question paper?



Yes. The examiner will not see your question paper.

8. What is the Speaking test?

The Speaking test is conducted with a one-to-one interview with a certified examiner, which is

recorded on an audiocassette or a digital recorder.

9. What should the candidate bring for the Speaking test?



The candidate needs to bring the same identification documents they supplied on registration, as

these must be checked again against the information on the application form. These documents will

be checked by the administrator and the Speaking examiner prior to the candidate entering the

interview room.

10. What happens if a candidate loses their Test Report Form?

At any time within two years of the date of the examination, a candidate can apply to the centre which

administered the test to be sent 5 copies of the original Test Report Form free of charge. These Test

Report Forms will not be sent to the candidates themselves, but the universities abroad, Embassy and

Consulate. For any further copies, there is an administration charge per copy. Please contact your

test centre for further details.

11. When will the candidate receive their results?

Under usual test circumstances, results will be released 13 calendar days after the test.

12. How soon can candidates repeat the test?

There is no limitation on how frequently candidates can sit IELTS. It should be noted however that

IELTS scores are not substantially improved merely by taking the test on multiple occasions. To

significantly improve a score it is necessary to engage in further study of a serious nature.

13. What help is available for disabled candidates?

Test centres make every effort to cater for the special needs of any disabled candidates, to enable

them to best understand questions and tasks and to give their answers. It is our aim for the language

level of all candidates, irrespective of disability, to be assessed fairly and objectively. Candidates with

special needs should inform their test centre when applying so that appropriate arrangements can be

made.

14. What happens if a candidate is delayed by circumstances beyond their control (e.g., a

transportation strike)?

The test centre may offer the candidate an alternative test on the next available test date.

15. What happens if a candidate wants to postpone or cancel their application?

Candidates who request a postponement or cancellation of their test within 5 weeks of the test date

will normally be charged the full fee unless their request is due to medical reason and they are able to

provide appropriate medical evidence to support their request within 5 days of the test date.

16. What happens if a candidate is absent on the day of the test without giving prior notice?



The candidate will lose their full test fee. However, if a medical certificate is provided within 5 days of

the test date then the full fee is refunded minus a local administrative deduction.

17. What can candidates do if they are unhappy with their results?



Candidates may apply for an enquiry on results procedure at the centre at which they took their test

within four weeks of issue of results. There is a standard fee for this which is fully refunded should the

band score change.

18. Candidates can receive copies of their test results under the following conditions:



 Results from the test date and up to 1 month after.

One (1) personal copy of the TRF (Test Report Form) for the candidate.

Up to maximum of five (5) copies sent FREE of charge to institution addresses as provided by the

candidate on the application form.



 From one (1) month to two (2) years.

Candidate can request up to five (5) additional copies to be forwarded to institution addresses

only, as provided by candidate. There may be a reasonable handling charge requested by the

Test Centre for administration/postage.



19. Where can I take IELTS?



You can take IELTS in over 300 locations worldwide. A full list of these locations ('test centres') is

available on the IELTS Website.

20. When can I take IELTS?



IELTS is available on up to 48 fixed dates a year-up to four times a month, depending on local

demand. Your nearest test centre can give you the dates

21. What is the difference between taking the IELTS test with British Council and with IDP?

IELTS is internationally owned, internationally focused, internationally accessible and internationally

recognised. The British Council and IDP IELTS Australia are IELTS test delivery partners and there is

no difference in taking the test with either organisation.

Examiners working with both partners have to go through the same extensive training and retraining

programme and are regularly monitored to ensure they are applying the assessment criteria

accurately. Inconsistencies are not accepted and appropriate action is taken against those

examiners.

22. Why have the half band scores in speaking and writing been introduced?

The partners strive for continuous research and take feedback from stakeholders to continually

improve the test. The stakeholders felt that introducing half band scores in speaking and writing

sections of the test will give them information about the precise level of the candidate and enable

them to make a more informed decision. This does not disadvantage the candidates but gives a more

accurate result. Read more about the half bands.

23. Can I take only one module or do I have to take all four modules?

This is not possible as the final band score is an average of the score for each of the 4 skills of

listening, reading, writing and speaking. The proficiency of the candidates can only be judged based

on his/her final band score. Research has shown that people can increase (via practice) or even

decrease (via infrequent use of the language) their proficiency level from time to time.

24. How do authorities who accept IELTS know if an IELTS result is genuine?



Most organisations that accept IELTS (universities, immigration authorities) have direct access to the

global on-line IELTS verification service. From their computer they can see:



 if any of the information on the test report form has been altered e.g. band scores, photo, id

numbers etc



 if an IELTS test report form is genuine

This ensures that only genuine IELTS test report forms are accepted. Presenting a fake or altered

test report form can have serious consequences for candidates.

25. Are there any training institutes for IELTS authorised by the British Council?

No, the British Council does not authorise or quality assure IELTS training centres. But our website

does have contact information of British Council Registration Centres, some of which also offer

training facilities.

26. Why do candidates have to bring their passport to the exam?

It is essential to the authorities and institutions who accept IELTS that they are 100% sure that the

person who sat the exam is the same as the person whose identity appears on the TRF. Therefore in

each country there is an agreement with these authorities on what is the most acceptable means of

identification. For India, this is an original valid passport and our invigilators are trained to spot non-

genuine or amended passports. The authorities who accept IELTS, such as the High Commissions in

India, do spot checks on us to ensure we are following these procedures and would doubt the validity

of our IELTS scores if we were not following this rule.

27. Is IELTS accepted in the USA?

Yes, at the latest count, 1400 US universities and colleges recognise IELTS for proof of English

language ability for students, including Princeton, Duke and Harvard Business School. Read for more

29. Do you conduct IELTS for special needs candidates? If yes, what is the procedure?



We do conduct IELTS test for special needs candidates. We do not have any special dates for them.

They can take the test on the regular dates.

All special needs candidates need to provide us with:



 at least 6 weeks prior notice (for any special need requirements)

 a medical report/diagnostic report

 a written request

 two choices of dates (in case the special need requirement needs a longer period)

Special arrangements can be made for candidates with special needs, for example:



 Visual difficulties

 Hearing difficulties

 Speaking difficulties

 Specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia

 Permanent writing difficulties e.g. due to cerebral palsy

 Medical condition such as diabetes

The following can be provided for special needs candidates (please check availability with centre):



 If the candidate is dyslexic, extra time can be given on request sent from the Centre to Cambridge

 If a candidate has a problem with eyesight, we can provide an enlarged print

 Braille papers (contracted and uncontracted Braille)

 Lip-reading versions of listening papers

 The use of an amanuensis (someone who writes your answers for you as you dictate them)

30. Are the two tasks in the writing paper given the same weight?



No, Task 2 is given more weight than Task 1. This is because Task 1 is a restricted type where input

and output is to be produced on the basis of visual input given. In Task 2 the candidates are expected

to give opinions, examples and suggestions and thus greater linguistic ability is required. This is why

candidates are recommended to spend 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2.

31. What happens if I lose my identity document before the test?



On the day of the test, candidates must present the valid original passport at both the written test and

the speaking test.

If you lose your passport, we suggest you file an FIR and send a copy of this along with a letter

requesting for transfer of test to another date. You are advised to also get in touch with the nearest

Examination centre immediately. In the meanwhile you apply and get a new passport as soon as

possible.

32. Can I take the test again if I'm rejected because I presented a fake identity document or there

was an impersonation?

No, you can't take the test again. You are banned from taking IELTS in the future.

33. What is the passing score in IELTS?

There is no passing score in IELTS. However, universities or embassies may tell you the band score

they require.

34. When will I get the test results?

Your Test Report Form will be sent out by the British Council on the 13th day after the test.

*The use of Javascript and/or Java Applet depends on which browser you use. Typically Internet Explorer

users with Version 4 or above will use the Javascript method. Netscape users, or users whose browser

Use and Disclosure of Personal Information

The company will use personal information to:



 provide its services, particularly those associated with student services (eg recruitment, English

language testing)

 provide students, institutions and other clients of developments in the services it offers

 manage its internal business operations

The company will only disclose information for the purpose for which it was collected, and where

appropriate, after obtaining the necessary consent from the individual. Information may be disclosed for

other purposes, with the specific consent of the individual to do so.

The company may also be required to disclose personal information where the law requires such

disclosure.

Security of Personal Information



The company will take reasonable steps to ensure the security of personal information that it holds,

regardless of the form in which that information is held. This will include taking reasonable steps to

prevent the misuse or loss of this information, or unauthorised disclosure, access to, or modification of this

information.

Where the information is held in electronic form, access will be controlled by user logins and passwords,

and restriction of access only to persons who need to have that access in the course of the company's

business activities.

All staff of the company are subject to confidentiality obligations as part of their conditions of employment.

Right of Access by the Individual



Any individual has the right to request access at any time to the personal information that the company

holds about that person. This access will be refused where the company cannot be satisfied as to the

identity of the person requesting that access.

Any individual can request the company to modify or correct personal information that the person believes

to be incorrect.

The company can refuse to provide access to personal information where the Privacy Act allows it to do

so.

IELTS Australia Limited (IELTS) is bound by the National Privacy Principles (NPP's), as set out in the

Privacy Act 1988 (as amended).

In general, IELTS partners hold the following types of personal information:



 personal details of individuals who have enquired about study opportunities in Australia, or who

have applied to undertake a course of study at an Australian educational institution, or an

overseas education institution that has entered into a twinning arrangement with an Australian

education institution. As IELTS partners operate in over 30 overseas countries, it is unavoidable

that some of this personal information is sensitive information (ie the individual's racial or ethnic

origin);

 personal details of individuals who have applied to undertake, or have undertaken, an

assessment service provided by, or through, IELTS. In the case of individuals who have

completed such assessment, IELTS will also hold the results achieved by the individual;

 personal details of individuals who have formally advised/registered their interest in being

engaged as consultants, or individuals who have been, or are currently, engaged as consultants

on projects/programs managed by IELTS partners (or IELTS partners in consortium with other

organisations);

 personal details about individuals who have registered their names with a service offered by the

company (eg the Graduate Recruitment Service)

 personal details about individuals who have registered to participate in an event organised,

managed or presented by IELTS partners, whether in its own right, or under contract for another

organisation.

 In general, IELTS partners use this personal information for the following purposes:

 assisting an individual to avail themselves of the opportunity to undertake studies in an Australian

education institution;

 assisting an individual to further their career after completing their studies at an Australian

education institution, or an overseas education institution twinned to an Australian education

institution

 provide opportunities for individuals to participate in projects/programs as consultants

 effective management of events

IELTS partners have taken reasonable steps to ensure the security and appropriate use of personal

information including:



 developing and implementing a Privacy Policy

 training its staff in the management of personal information

 developing and implementing appropriate computer system controls

IELTS is a contractor to the Commonwealth and State governments, and contracts out services.

Requests for access to personal information should be addressed to the Company Secretary (as set out

above).

Where a request is limited to access to an individual's personal information, the company will take all

reasonable steps to respond within five (5) working days of the receipt of the request. These steps will

include verification of the identity of the individual concerned.

Where the request is in respect of correction of inaccuracies to an individual's personal information, the

nature of the inaccuracy must be clearly stated, along with the information required to be entered in lieu of

the inaccurate information. The company will take all reasonable steps to respond within five (5) working

days of the receipt of the request. These steps will include verification of the identity of the individual

concerned.

All requests for access to personal information (for whatever purpose) will be responded to in writing, and

will be recorded in a register maintained for this purpose.

Where the individual's identity cannot be verified to the satisfaction of the Company Secretary, the request

for access will be denied.

Half band scores



From 1 July 2007, we're making a small but important change which will make IELTS Band Scores more

informative. Scores for each part of the test will still be reported on the scale from 1 to 9, but now the

Writing and Speaking tests will be reported in whole or half bands in the same way as the Reading and

Listening tests.

1. What can the candidate bring into the examination room?



Only pens, pencils and erasers. Correction fluid must not be used. You must leave anything which

you do not need, or which is not allowed, either outside the examination room, or as instructed by the

supervisor. Mobile phones and pagers must be switched off and placed with personal belongings in

the area designated by the supervisor. Any candidate who does not switch off their phone/pager, or

who retains one in their possession, will be disqualified.

2. Is the IELTS test completed in one day?



The Listening, Reading and Writing components of the test are always completed immediately after

each other and in this same order with no schedule break. The Speaking test can be taken up to 7

days either before or after the test date.

3. What kind of accents can be heard in the Listening and Speaking tests?



As IELTS is an international test, a variety of English accents are used in both of these examinations.

4. Does the listening tape provide the candidate with necessary instructions and pauses?

Yes. At the beginning of the test, candidates receive instructions and hear a sample question. Next,

candidates read Section One questions and then listen to Section One and answer the questions on

the question paper as they listen. The same procedure follows for Sections Two, Three and Four. This

takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. In the following final ten minutes, candidates transfer

their answers onto the answer sheet.

5. Is there a similar period of ten minutes at the end of the Reading test for the transfer of

answers?

No. The Reading test is one hour, and you must write all your answers on the answer sheet in this

time.

6. Can I complete the Listening and Reading answer sheet in pen?



No. The answer sheet is scanned by a computer which cannot read pen.

7. Can I make some notes on the Listening and Reading question paper?

Yes. The examiner will not see your question paper.

8. What is the Speaking test?

The Speaking test is conducted with a one-to-one interview with a certified examiner, which is

recorded on an audiocassette or a digital recorder.

9. What should the candidate bring for the Speaking test?

The candidate needs to bring the same identification documents they supplied on registration, as

these must be checked again against the information on the application form. These documents will

be checked by the administrator and the Speaking examiner prior to the candidate entering the

interview room.

10. What happens if a candidate loses their Test Report Form?

At any time within two years of the date of the examination, a candidate can apply to the centre which

administered the test to be sent 5 copies of the original Test Report Form free of charge. These Test

Report Forms will not be sent to the candidates themselves, but the universities abroad, Embassy and

Consulate. For any further copies, there is an administration charge per copy. Please contact your

test centre for further details.

11. When will the candidate receive their results?



Under usual test circumstances, results will be released 13 calendar days after the test.

12. How soon can candidates repeat the test?



There is no limitation on how frequently candidates can sit IELTS. It should be noted however that

IELTS scores are not substantially improved merely by taking the test on multiple occasions. To

significantly improve a score it is necessary to engage in further study of a serious nature.

13. What help is available for disabled candidates?

Test centres make every effort to cater for the special needs of any disabled candidates, to enable

them to best understand questions and tasks and to give their answers. It is our aim for the language

level of all candidates, irrespective of disability, to be assessed fairly and objectively. Candidates with

special needs should inform their test centre when applying so that appropriate arrangements can be

made.

14. What happens if a candidate is delayed by circumstances beyond their control (e.g., a

transportation strike)?



The test centre may offer the candidate an alternative test on the next available test date.

15. What happens if a candidate wants to postpone or cancel their application?

Candidates who request a postponement or cancellation of their test within 5 weeks of the test date

will normally be charged the full fee unless their request is due to medical reason and they are able to

provide appropriate medical evidence to support their request within 5 days of the test date.

16. What happens if a candidate is absent on the day of the test without giving prior notice?

The candidate will lose their full test fee. However, if a medical certificate is provided within 5 days of

the test date then the full fee is refunded minus a local administrative deduction.

17. What can candidates do if they are unhappy with their results?

Candidates may apply for an enquiry on results procedure at the centre at which they took their test

within four weeks of issue of results. There is a standard fee for this which is fully refunded should the

band score change.

18. Candidates can receive copies of their test results under the following conditions:



 Results from the test date and up to 1 month after.

One (1) personal copy of the TRF (Test Report Form) for the candidate.

Up to maximum of five (5) copies sent FREE of charge to institution addresses as provided by the

candidate on the application form.



 From one (1) month to two (2) years.

Candidate can request up to five (5) additional copies to be forwarded to institution addresses

only, as provided by candidate. There may be a reasonable handling charge requested by the

Test Centre for administration/postage.



19. Where can I take IELTS?



You can take IELTS in over 300 locations worldwide. A full list of these locations ('test centres') is

available on the IELTS Website.

20. When can I take IELTS?



IELTS is available on up to 48 fixed dates a year-up to four times a month, depending on local

demand. Your nearest test centre can give you the dates

21. What is the difference between taking the IELTS test with British Council and with IDP?

IELTS is internationally owned, internationally focused, internationally accessible and internationally

recognised. The British Council and IDP IELTS Australia are IELTS test delivery partners and there is

no difference in taking the test with either organisation.

Examiners working with both partners have to go through the same extensive training and retraining

programme and are regularly monitored to ensure they are applying the assessment criteria

accurately. Inconsistencies are not accepted and appropriate action is taken against those

examiners.

22. Why have the half band scores in speaking and writing been introduced?



The partners strive for continuous research and take feedback from stakeholders to continually

improve the test. The stakeholders felt that introducing half band scores in speaking and writing

sections of the test will give them information about the precise level of the candidate and enable

them to make a more informed decision. This does not disadvantage the candidates but gives a more

accurate result. Read more about the half bands.

23. Can I take only one module or do I have to take all four modules?



This is not possible as the final band score is an average of the score for each of the 4 skills of

listening, reading, writing and speaking. The proficiency of the candidates can only be judged based

on his/her final band score. Research has shown that people can increase (via practice) or even

decrease (via infrequent use of the language) their proficiency level from time to time.

24. How do authorities who accept IELTS know if an IELTS result is genuine?



Most organisations that accept IELTS (universities, immigration authorities) have direct access to the

global on-line IELTS verification service. From their computer they can see:



 if any of the information on the test report form has been altered e.g. band scores, photo, id

numbers etc



 if an IELTS test report form is genuine

This ensures that only genuine IELTS test report forms are accepted. Presenting a fake or altered

test report form can have serious consequences for candidates.

25. Are there any training institutes for IELTS authorised by the British Council?

No, the British Council does not authorise or quality assure IELTS training centres. But our website

does have contact information of British Council Registration Centres, some of which also offer

training facilities.

26. Why do candidates have to bring their passport to the exam?



It is essential to the authorities and institutions who accept IELTS that they are 100% sure that the

person who sat the exam is the same as the person whose identity appears on the TRF. Therefore in

each country there is an agreement with these authorities on what is the most acceptable means of

identification. For India, this is an original valid passport and our invigilators are trained to spot non-

genuine or amended passports. The authorities who accept IELTS, such as the High Commissions in

India, do spot checks on us to ensure we are following these procedures and would doubt the validity

of our IELTS scores if we were not following this rule.

27. Is IELTS accepted in the USA?

Yes, at the latest count, 1400 US universities and colleges recognise IELTS for proof of English

language ability for students, including Princeton, Duke and Harvard Business School. Read for more

29. Do you conduct IELTS for special needs candidates? If yes, what is the procedure?



We do conduct IELTS test for special needs candidates. We do not have any special dates for them.

They can take the test on the regular dates.

All special needs candidates need to provide us with:



 at least 6 weeks prior notice (for any special need requirements)

 a medical report/diagnostic report

 a written request

 two choices of dates (in case the special need requirement needs a longer period)

Special arrangements can be made for candidates with special needs, for example:



 Visual difficulties

 Hearing difficulties

 Speaking difficulties

 Specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia

 Permanent writing difficulties e.g. due to cerebral palsy

 Medical condition such as diabetes

The following can be provided for special needs candidates (please check availability with centre):



 If the candidate is dyslexic, extra time can be given on request sent from the Centre to Cambridge

 If a candidate has a problem with eyesight, we can provide an enlarged print

 Braille papers (contracted and uncontracted Braille)

 Lip-reading versions of listening papers

 The use of an amanuensis (someone who writes your answers for you as you dictate them)

30. Are the two tasks in the writing paper given the same weight?

No, Task 2 is given more weight than Task 1. This is because Task 1 is a restricted type where input

and output is to be produced on the basis of visual input given. In Task 2 the candidates are expected

to give opinions, examples and suggestions and thus greater linguistic ability is required. This is why

candidates are recommended to spend 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2.

31. What happens if I lose my identity document before the test?

On the day of the test, candidates must present the valid original passport at both the written test and

the speaking test.

If you lose your passport, we suggest you file an FIR and send a copy of this along with a letter

requesting for transfer of test to another date. You are advised to also get in touch with the nearest

Examination centre immediately. In the meanwhile you apply and get a new passport as soon as

possible.

32. Can I take the test again if I'm rejected because I presented a fake identity document or there

was an impersonation?



No, you can't take the test again. You are banned from taking IELTS in the future.

33. What is the passing score in IELTS?

There is no passing score in IELTS. However, universities or embassies may tell you the band score

they require.

34. When will I get the test results?



Your Test Report Form will be sent out by the British Council on the 13th day after the test.
