Study Abroad (Back to Top)
QS. I am studying in class XII. What is the best time to apply for TOEFL and SAT? Should I apply after my
10+2 or after my graduation? I am very confused.
ANS.TOEFL is a basic requirement for assessing proficiency in the English language (as is spoken in North America)
of all those who wish to apply for higher studies in the US and whose native language is not English.
You would need the TOEFL scores while applying for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. However, SAT
scores are meant to assess a student's preparedness for pursuing undergraduate study in US colleges, so schedule
SAT if you are interested in applying to US colleges for your undergraduate education (leading to a Bachelor's
degree).
If you are planning to apply for admission to US colleges in the 2007-2008 sessions, you should be scheduling
TOEFL and SAT now.
If you want to pursue your Master's degree in the US, you should be applying for TOEFL and GRE (for all
graduate courses) in the final stages of your Bachelor's degree or after. For admission to professional courses like
MBA, medicine, law, pharmacy, etc you would have to appear for GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, PCAT, etc
respectively. For up-to- date information you can visit the TOEFL website: www.ets.org/toefl. and the SAT
website: www.collegeboard.com.
QS.I have taken up Arts in class XII CBSC boards and interested in pursuing an undergraduate course in The
United States. Could you give me information about the TOEFL - iBT Internet Based Testing?
ANS: The TOEFL – iBT [Test of English as a Foreign Language - Internet Based Test] has been introduced in some
locations within India starting April 2006.
The new TOEFL – iBT is a linear and computer adaptive test. This means that all candidates answer questions
from the same range of difficulty, rather than receiving only questions at the ability level.
The new TOEFL iBT tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication; speaking,
listening, reading and writing. There is no longer a structure section. Grammar is tested on questions and tasks in
each section.
The test has a new speaking section, which includes independent and integrated tasks. Test takers will need to
speak into a microphone when they respond. The responses are digitally recorded and transmitted to ETS's Online
Scoring Network, where they are evaluated. In the writing section, you must write a response to questions,
(materials) they have heard and read, and to compose an essay in support of an opinion.
It also now requires typing. There is an integrated task in addition to the current independent task, and the scoring
guides (rubrics) used for rating are different from the current test. Also, test takers can now take notes on any
section of the test and can use the notes when giving answers. The Test fee for TOEFL iBT is 140$.
Sample practice test and other resources are available on: www.ets.org/toeflpractice.
For up-to -date information you can visit TOEFL website: www.ets.org/toefl.

QS.I have completed my plus two in medical stream. Could you kindly give me information about the
paramedical streams I can opt for or any other stream other than medicine?
ANS.With subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Biology, other than medicine, you can try for many careers in the
medical field, such as Nursing, Medical Lab Technology, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational
therapy, Orthotics and Prosthetic Technology, Audiology and Speech Therapy, for which you may take up a
three- or four-year degree or a two-year diploma programme. It will enable you to start working right away after
graduation in a clinic, hospital or pharmaceutical company. Other options include, Food Processing, for which you
(25)
need to be a B.Sc. in Food Technology or Home Science. Forensic Science, Catering, Nutrition and Dietetics or
even Hotel Management are other avenues for you. There are good training facilities for all these courses and also
many job opportunities for professionals with skills in these areas.
A recent addition to the options is a Hospital Administration programme, which provides expertise to manage the
functioning of a hospital. The subject is taught in a two-year, post-graduate programme open to graduates. With
hospitals now being run as viable profit centres, this could be a career with good future prospects.
QS.I am pursuing class 12th with physics, chemistry, maths and biology and appearing for various medical
entrance examinations. I am also exploring the option of pursuing medical studies in the USA. I wish to
know the basic eligibility for taking up medical studies in the US and the exams required?
ANS. In the United States, professional study in medicine generally follows completion of a bachelor's degree 12 + 4.
Typically less than 3 percent of international applicants are accepted and most of them are individuals who have
completed their undergraduate education in the United States. Some state-supported schools will consider only US
citizens and permanent residents for admission. Prerequisite courses in the biological sciences, chemistry,
mathematics, behavioural and social sciences, and humanities with an excellent undergraduate academic record;
fluency in English; extracurricular activities such as work experience and volunteer commitments; and a
satisfactory score on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) are basic requirements for application to
medical school in the US. Details of MCAT would be given on (www.aamc.org/).You could consider
undergraduate studies in the US to lead up to medical study in the US, only if you are comfortable with the huge
financial outlay involved.

QS. I. am a student of class XII, interested in Biology. Could you kindly let me know the different courses I
could pursue after class XII?
(27)
ANS.If your interest in biology is supported by a good performance in 10+2 level, then it could be the basis of a deci-

in medicine and allied fields (nursing physiotherapy, audiology and speech therapy, prosthetics and orthotics,
occupational therapy, medical lab technology, optometry, pharmacy,) food science, forestry, horticulture, home
science, as also botany, zoology microbiology, biochemistry and veterinary science. However, such courses
would also require basic ability and interest in chemistry and physics, as the admission tests for the same would
have questions from these subjects. If admission is on merit basis, marks of physics, chemistry and biology would
be considered together for admission purposes. Pay serious attention to all the subjects of HSC/10+2 science,
decide whether you would like to apply for entrance tests related to some or all of the above mentioned courses,
and apply for the same at the appropriate time.

India
for CS (www.icsi.edu). You can continue with B.Com and pursue one or a combination of these courses
alongside. However, plan your schedule to give due attention to both. Although CA, CWA and CS are profes-
sional courses, you have to complete your graduation too.
Those completing 10+2 in commerce may also apply for professional courses like the five year integrated law
degree course, or the three or four-year hotel management degree course or Bachelor of Fine Arts in fine arts/
applied art or an undergraduate programme in design, fashion design or allied programmes that are suitable for
those with aptitude for drawing/ sketching.
Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) or equivalent programme would be suitable for students who are

flair for languages and a desire to pursue careers in linguistics.

taxation, computer applications, etc, B. Com (Banking & Insurance) and B.Com (Accounting & Finance) and they
can also apply for Bachelor's in Business Studies/ Administration, BMS, BMM or switch to BA.

of India (www.insuranceinstituteofindia.com) or actuarial training through Actuarial Society of India
(www.actuaries. india. org) for those who are proficient in Maths (scoring 85% and above in XII boards) or an
event management diploma course or the National Stock Exchange's Certification in Financial Markets (NCFM)
(www.nseindia.com/content /ncfm/ncfm modules. htm), AMFI Mutual Fund Certification (www.amfi-
india.com/testingprogram.html) and certification tests and training programmes of BSE Training Institute (BTI),
The Stock Exchange, Mumbai(www.bseindia.com/training/bti.asp)(www.bseindia.com/traing/certficationtest.asp).
Do remember that value-addition would not be effective if you don't do well in B.Com during all the three years.
QS. Could you apprise me about the newly launched three year degree programme for commerce students with
a specialisation in banking and insurance launched by Mumbai University? I would like to know the details
of the course content?
ANS. The Mumbai University has newly launched, three year degree programme for commerce students with a
specialisation in banking and insurance [BBF] and the other specialisation available is accounts and finance
(BAF). The course follows the semester pattern.
The course content is as follows:-
The first year includes two semesters. Semester one concentrates on building blocks of computer systems,
principles of management, economics and financial services.
Semester two moves ahead and students are initiated in to the basic practices of banking and insurance. A few
more blocks about economics are strengthened and financial accounting is introduced. Having mastered all these
you move on to the second year.
(29)
The Second year brings with it semesters three and four and focuses on laws that govern banking and insurance in
India, thumb rules of financial managements and tax -implications in financial services. Handling customers,
understanding organizational behaviour and integrating information technology (IT) into the banking and
insurance sectors are also covered. Semester four works towards deepening financial management concepts and
understanding financial markets is the highlight of this semester. It also touches upon corporate and capital markets
laws. Understanding entrepreneurship management, innovations in banking and insurance sectors and cost
accountancy. With two years and four semesters behind you, the foundations of banking and insurance get
stronger.
The final year encompasses semesters five and six and gears towards the marketing aspects in banking and
insurance sectors, international banking, financial reporting and analysis, portfolio management, auditing and
strategic management. A project presentation at the end of the year sums up this course.
The duration of the Course is Three years. Eligibility is 10+2 or equivalent commerce marks, no entrance tests.
The Notification is usually out as soon as the HSC results in Mumbai are declared. All prominent commerce
colleges offer this course. However, you can log on to www.mu.ac.in for details.
QS. I am studying in FYB.COM (Banking and Insurance). What further studies can I pursue to enter the
banking sector? I joined this course as it would help me for the Probationary Officers (PO) exam to become
a manager in a bank. After doing M.Com, can i achieve a higher rank in a bank? From where can I get
study material for Bank PO Exam?
ANS. This course is not necessary for taking the bank PO exam. But rather than any other graduation programme, this
would be more relevant for someone who wants to understand the working of the industry.
The bank PO exam is conducted by nationalised banks to recruit graduates (securing at least 60 per cent, in most
cases, but could be 65 per cent and above too) for recruitment into the junior management cadre.
After training on-the job through the two year probation period, and some years of work experience, one may
become a manager of such a bank.
In the private sector banks, first class graduates are recruited as Officer Trainee through a selection process similar
to the PO selection procedure. However, management cadre entry in the private and foreign banks is mainly
through campus recruitment of MBAs from B-schools.
Officers in commercial banks can get lateral entry into private and foreign banks if they have experience relevant
to the vacancies. The bank PO exam consists of a written exam which has an objective test and a descriptive test
(merely qualifying in nature). The objective test has sections on quantitative aptitude (usually arithmetic of
secondary school level); reasoning (analytical and logical, verbal and non-verbal); general awareness (mainly
current affairs and with emphasis on banking, economy, and related matters); and English language (merely
qualifying with questions on English language usage and comprehension).
There are bank PO study guides by reputed publishing houses. Those who clear the written test are called for
interview. M.Com would not automatically give you a higher rank in a bank. In the field of insurance, consider
courses by the Insurance Institute of India (www.insuranceinstituteofindia.com).
MBA after B.Com (banking and insurance) can lead to entry as management trainee in the private sector and
foreign banks as also private insurance companies.

AFTER HSC/10+2: BBA/BMS/BBS (Back to Top)
QS. I am in 10+2 commerce. I want to do a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) after pursuing
Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA). Which are the best colleges for BBA? Also, which are the
different fields of management which are beneficial?
ANS.Bachelor's degree programmes in business administration/ business studies/ management studies are called by
various names by the different universities. Hence, you are likely to come across BBA, BBS, BMS courses, all of
which are more or less the same thing.
Normally, there is an objective-type entrance test for admission to BBA/ BBS/ BMS courses which evaluates
English language, quantitative aptitude and reasoning skills. However, the basic focus would be to seek admission
into BBA BBS/ BMS courses offered by a government recognized university. There is really no ranking or
assessment of colleges for such programmes, but every university would have its share of prominent colleges
which attract the cream of students, and such colleges are usually rated among the best.
All specialisation or fields of management can be good, but when you choose a specialisation it should be-in-the
context of your-abilities and personality. For example, finance is a good specialisation if you have strong
numerical and analytical skills, while marketing is ideal for those with strong interpersonal communication skills
who are open minded, comfortable with numbers and have commercial awareness.
The decision on a specialisation needs to be taken much later. So as of now focus on trying for the best colleges
for your Bachelor's degree.

QS. I ve just given my class XII exams Science stream [non medical ].I am interested in doing MBA

ANS. While integrated courses are fine. They are not of much value unless done from a top- notch institution.
If you don’t get admission into a reputed institution, it may be better to do your graduation first. Work for a while
to gain some practical experience and then try for an MBA from a really good B-school that offers excellent
placement facilities.
This is a better option than tying yourself down to a mediocre 5-years course.

AFTER HSC/10+2: FINE ARTS (Back to Top)
QS. Could you let me know about the different fields in fine arts, what they cover and its scope? Could you let
me know about some of the institutes offering courses in this discipline?
ANS. Pursing fine arts is no longer a mere hobby, but can be a lucrative career option as well. Fine arts include paint-
ing, sculpture and applied / commercial arts. Each field is extensive and requires hard work and perseverance to
succeed. Skills required are creativity, imagination as well patience.
Painting
Painting involves designing portraits, murals, sceneries, still life, abstracts painting and print making, using vari-
ous types of medium and on different surfaces. With mushrooming of art galleries and commercialization of
paintings, the field has become lucrative. Today, an established artist can sell his work of art for lakhs. Other
career options available for artists are teaching, freelancing, designing and working as an art consultant.
Sculpture
Sculpting is crafting statues, figures and monuments by either chiseling stone, carving wood or modeling clay.
Modern sculptors use materials like cement, concrete, plaster of Paris or white bronze. Sculpture provides a
common denominator for many related disciplines such as architecture, design and imagery.
Applied art / commercial art
Commercial art implies application of various mediums of art for business purposes such as advertisement,
graphic designing, and designing book jackets and so on. An applied art is an extension of art in industrial field,
for exhibitions and window displays, hoarding techniques, catalogues, cinema slides and illustrator.
Some of the avenues are:
Graphic designing, which includes designing brochures, posters, banners in exhibitions, designing pages for news-
papers, promotional displays, company's logo, web pages, brand stationary and so on; animation; interior
decoration; fashion designing; automobile designing, event management and so on. Today students with
knowledge of both animation and web designing have a great future as companies nowadays, prefer multi-skilled
professionals.

QS. I completed my diploma in electronic engineering in 2005. I wish to continue my studies. Since I am
working for the last one year, taking up a full-time course is not possible for me. Which is a suitable course
for me? Can I do BCA/ B Sc (Electronics)? Is B. Sc of shorter duration for diploma holders?
ANS. BCA and B Sc Electronics, which are three year courses, may not significantly add to your qualifications since
you have already completed your diploma in engineering. In the same three years you can complete your AMIE
(Associate Member of Institution of Engineers (www.iete.org) which is recognized all over the world as
equivalent to BE. This exam is conducted only by the Institution of Engineers which has state centres in almost all
state capitals, and a few more centres in smaller cities. AMIE is offered in several engineering disciplines
including architecture, material science, civil, electronics and telecom, electrical, mechanical, computers, textile,
production, agriculture, aerospace, environmental, marine, chemical, mining and metallurgy engineering, among
others.
However, diploma holders can only pursue the branch in which they have done their diploma while class 12
students can take up any branch. You can even do a part-time BE / B Tech which is usually a four-year
programme, from an engineering college which has such a provision.
QS. What is the difference between professional education and vocational education?
ANS.Vocational education is connected with a course, designed to impart practical knowledge and develop skills in
students so that they can get a job. It develops job skills and trains for employment related to the job market. The
programmes are tailored according to the changing demands in the job market.
Professional Education is connected with a job that needs specialized skills and a high level of education for e.g. a
medical, legal, teaching profession requires a high degree of specialization as well as high level of education.

AFTER HSC/10+2: MISCELLINEOUS QUESTIONS (Back to Top)
QS.Although I was expecting much more, I have scored only 52percent marks in the Class XII (CBSE) boards.
Should I appear for the exam again, and how do I go about it? I am very confused and depressed.
ANS.Board results are not always a true mirror of a student's abilities. At times, they can be very unpredictable. You
have several remedial options to choose from:
First of all, you must apply for verification of your CBSE marks within 21 days of the declaration of results.
If in Delhi, you can collect and deposit your application form for rechecking of marks and fees (Rs. 100 in cash
(per subject) at designated schools. These forms are not available at the CBSE office directly. The forms can also
be downloaded from the CBSE website: www.cbsceresults.nic.in.
Those outside Delhi can obtain the verification forms from the CBSE format of Regional Office or the schools.
You can also use a Photostat verification form or download from the CBSE website. However, remember that
verification does not mean that your answer sheet will be physically revaluated. It only ensures that your
supplementary copies have been tagged and your marks have been properly totaled.
Secondly, you can appear for the Class XII exams as a private candidate from your own school or directly from
the CBSE. However, you will have to surrender your previous marks, so make sure your performance is really
good this time. Check with your own school or from your state board for details.
You can also appear for the CBSE Class XII exam through Patrachar Vidyalaya (D/o Education, Govt. of NCT of
Delhi). The Delhi Senior Secondary Exam is conducted by the CBSE for students studying through
(66)
correspondence in all three streams. Details: www.delhigovt.nic.in. Check with your State Department of
Education on your state government’s website.
The third option is to take the Class XII exam through the National Institute of Open Schooling. NIOS provides
you an opportunity to study and clear a subject in which you may have fared poorly either in high school or the
plus two of the CBSE syllabus. Exams are conducted twice a year in May and November. You can appear in as
many subjects as you like at a time. Incidentally, you are permitted as many as 9 attempts.
The fourth option is to go for a bachelor's degree through distance learning: even if you were to complete your
graduation entirely through distance learning, your degree certificate will not mention anything to that effect.
Moreover a good percentage at the graduation level will compensate for a relatively poor performance at the
school level Of course, the latter option may not be the ideal one for you if your heart is set on pursuing a
professional course like engineering, medicine or architecture straight after Class XII which cannot be done
through correspondence or pursued at the postgraduate level unlike some other professional courses e.g. MBA,
MCA, Mass Com, Law etc. which are open to students of all streams. Incidentally over 1 lakh students of Class X
and 37,500 of Class XII took the compartment exams last year.
QS.I have just appeared for my CBSE class XII exam? I don’t know which stream of studies to opt for? Could
you please advise me on what I should do in advance to prepare myself for my admissions and prevent last
minute hassles?
ANS.First things first: You need to have a fair idea of which course you want to pursue. Be realistic with your choic-
es. You're the only one who knows how you have fared, so plan accordingly. Decide your field and make a list of
colleges/ institutes in the order of your preference. Unless you are absolutely certain that your scores will ensure
admission, choose an alternative field of study, and make a list of colleges for that field too.
You will need to have ready attested copies of all your documents at the time of admission. Most students make
multiple applications, so it is advisable to have at least 10 copies of each document. All copies of certificates
attached to the application form should be attested by the principal or vice principal of the college/ school or a
Gazetted Officer or a Special Executive Officer. Original certificates must not be attached with the application.
Of course, many documents (like your mark sheet, passing certificate, migration certificate, School College
leaving certificate etc) will be available only after the results are out, but you could start working on other
documents. Passport size photographs will be required aplenty so keep copies handy; these things will save you
precious time later.
For admission into professional courses like engineering/medicine etc and degree colleges:
*True copy (attested or certified photo copy) of Statement of Marks/Passing certificate for class 10th
(CBSE/ICSE) or equivalent examination;
* True copy of Statement of Marks/Passing certificate at the qualifying examination HSC (XII) or equivalent;
* True copy of Provisional Statement of Eligibility and Migration certificate (by candidates who have passed HSC
(XII) from boards other than the State board);
* True copy of school/ college leaving certificate/ bonafide certificate from the last attended institution;
* True copy of Respective Entrance exam score card;
* Medical certificate in the specified format;
* Copy of admission slip/ allotment letter;
* True copy of domicile certificate;
* Transfer order of the parent (for children of State Government employees);
* Caste Certificate/ Caste Validity Certificate for candidates belonging to reserved categories;
* Many colleges offer reservations for minority communities. If you are applying for this quota, then submit an
affidavit and proof that you belong to that particular community.
Stamp size photo (recent)
For candidates wishing to claim additional marks in science:
For claiming additional marks in the science (vocational) stream, different colleges may have different
requirement. But by and large, here's what they need:
(67)
* NCC/Scout Certificate;
* District/ state/ national-level participation in athletics and sports;
* Intermediate drawing examination certificate;
* Special category/ sports/ cultural activities/ physically challenged certificate (if admission is claimed under one
of these categories.
Note: The School Leaving Certificate is a permanent record of the college you are admitted to, and under no
circumstances shall be returned. So it is advisable to keep adequate attested photocopies of the same before
submission.
QS.I am a student of class XII from a non English medium school and lack confidence in communicating in
English. Could you help me?
ANS.lt is interesting to note that while some students from non-English medium schools believe that they would be
confident in giving a speech if their English was fluent, some students from English-medium schools are worried
about their public speaking, skills and also lack confidence facing an audience.
If, for some reason, you cannot opt for training classes, you don't need to worry. There are ways in which you can
improve your written and spoken English by yourself.
Read more: Read as much as you can, especially newspapers and magazines, which not only acquaint you with
everyday English, but also with current affairs. Invest in a good dictionary, one that not only gives you the mean-
ing of the word but also uses it in a dictionary which elaborates the meaning of words with sentence. If need be,
get a two language dictionary, which also gives you the meanings in a regional language. Try using the new words
you learn in your everyday communication.
Converse in English: You may not be fluent from the first day itself, but you have to try. Converse in English as
far as possible, be open to corrections, and learn to improve on those.
Development classes: Get enrolled in a developmental class teaching reading, grammar, listening; speaking and
vocabulary. Some good ones take care of every aspect of learning and coach you in every sphere. They conduct
face to face interaction where students are given a chance to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies and
interest, in this stage importance is not given to grammar or content but to let the student face an audience and
gain confidence. In the next stage they have to prepare a speech etc in this way the students learns language skills,
verbal non verbal gestures, conduct, body language etc.
Using the Internet: Computer skills are important for present academics and future careers. After learning the ba-
sics, get comfortable with the internet as it opens up a lot of opportunities and a world of information.
