Pharmparties Anna Smith
Staff Writer
A ―pharm‖ party, or a pharmaceuticals party, is when teenagers take prescription drugs from their parents medi-
cine cabinets and then take them to a party to share with friends. Although there isn’t any substantial evidence as
whether these ―pharm‖ parties are real or just made up by the media there certainly is a problem with teenagers
carelessly popping prescription drugs with friends and not.
The term ―pharm‖ party was a term coined by the media only recently despite the fact that teenage phar-
maceutical drug use has been around since the 1980s. But today’s statistics tell us that at least 1 in every 10 teen-
agers abuses pharmaceutical drugs and everyday 2,500 teenagers abuse a painkiller for the first time.
Most teens turn to these drugs thinking they’re safer than street drugs even though a doctor has pre-
scribed the drugs doesn’t change the fact that they’re still a foreign chemical that your introducing into their bod-
ies for an aesthetic high. Not only this, but prescription drugs are used for the exact same reasons as street drugs;
because of peer pressure, boredom, curiosity, and as a method to escape or deal with stress, anxiety, depression,
and the pressures of school. Some even use stimulants to try and get an edge on studying for tests.
―The DEA reported the arrests of 18 people in September of 2005 that accounted for an estimated 4,600
Internet pharmacies. These pharmacies or "pill mills" are selling prescription drugs freely on the Internet.‖
(Quote taken from Drug Rehab That Works, a company that offers drug rehabilitation and help to their family
members.) This shows that the Internet plays a part in the fight against drugs too, not only to buy drugs, or find
them, but to also exchange recipes for getting high. Some of these recipes are so crude that they only refer to
pills by colors and sizes which might be an explanation as to why teens who are sent to the Emergency Room for
drug overdoses are found to have extremely unusual drug combinations that need to be flushed from their sys-
tems.
So ―pharm‖ parties may or may not exist but pharmaceutical drug sharing and abuse is certainly a prob-
lem we need to take seriously.

Science Fair

Staff Writers Science fair is something every Harmony student has done before,
and newer students will probably do. This year’s science fair is HAS’s first.
As students here we should excel at making this the best science fair ever. It might seem hard but,
break it up into steps and it’ll be easy. First make sure you turn in all your work on time. This will help
keep your grades high. Second, the more information you have the better it will be for your grade.
Third, when you do your project make it very neat. Use cutters, double-sided tape, scrapbook paper,
and anything else that will make your project neat and pop out; the more organized the better. Bring
your project on a day before the original due date so that your teacher can tell you what to improve.
For the science fair, which is Saturday December 11, 2010, make sure you are at school at 8:30
am. Your parents are supposed to drop you off at 8:30 and then they can come back at 12:30 pm; par-
ents are not allowed to be at school during judging time which starts at 9:00. The dress code is lower
case Business attire so that means no jeans, tennis shoes, hats, etc. so NO casual clothes. Girls should
wear slacks or skirts and a dress shirt and guys should wear suits. To keep yourself entertained during
judging period bring a book. Electronic devices are not allowed meaning no iPods, mp3s, and cameras.
Just remember while presenting don’t be nervous, relax. Some helpful tips would be to practice what
you will say in front of the judges, write what you have to say on note cards, and remember to be confi-
dent. Awards for 1st, 2nd, 3rd will be given for each category. Students who place at the science fair may
be eligible to participate in the Houston wide science fair so remember to keep your presentation board.
Finals: Get Prepped

Did you study for the Finals over the past month? Remember that your score will affect 25% of
your grades. Don’t let your scores be a reason why you don't pass your first semester. Your
teachers, including your electives teachers will administer the test that covers what you have you
studied through the semester. Make sure you are prepared for the challenge. Don’t get nervous or
stressed, or it might make you sick and won’t be in good shape to take the finals. Be sure to eat
your breakfast and lunch to keep yourself focused and have a keen perspective. Here of some tips
to perform well on the Finals as well as the TAKS next year:
Have good night sleep and go to bed early.
Have a good breakfast and lunch.
If a teacher gives you a study, use it!
Study the day before finals or in the morning to have a fresh mind.
No cramming.
Eliminate stress.
Don’t get sick!

“Blame it on the Alcohol” Joshua Barnes
Staff Writer
Nationwide, there has been a dramatic increase of teens drinking alcohol. Alcohol has become
more of a teens drug because teens seem to have an easier time getting this drug. On average, about
5000 People under 21 die each year from alcohol-related events. 1,300 are motor vehicle fatalities,
1,600 as result of homicide, and 300 commit suicide. Efforts has been made to lecture teens through-
out schools not to indulge in alcohol and stay above the influence. Drinking usually starts around 8th
grade and often continues to 12th. Statistically, more boys than girls experiment with alcohol. There
are many people that often convince teens to drink, other than parents. It can be in movies, books,
advertisements, even your friends. Can you imagine your life going downhill after a discreet sip of
poison from your fridge? Don’t fool yourself into believing you can handle it because it’s a risk. Be-
fore you know it, your life could be spiraling out of control. There are consequences to keep in mind
if you are attracted to alcohol.
Not every individual can hold alcohol as well as others, especially comparing a teen to an
adult. It’s their tolerance of alcohol, if consumed enough the side effects can be very unpleasant. Al-
cohol can make you more likely to make bad decisions and participate in dangerous behaviors. Ado-
lescents’ brains aren’t finished developing, and alcohol can damage what you’ll do in the future if
you don’t stop. Your grades and work ethic can deteriorate. Your personality changes drastically after
consuming liquor, and a person may become hostile, hyper, withdrawn, depressed and more likely
incapable to avoid harmful behaviors. Alcohol can also push you to further drug use.
Typically alcohol is said to be normal in life, but it’s not meant for teens. Addiction to alcohol
is dangerous to yourself and everyone around you. If you see adults in movies or books that can’t
control themselves after getting blitzed, think of the affects on teenagers. Some don’t think about the
affects of liquor when it comes to tolerance and age. Do you want alcohol and drugs to control your
life? Have a change of attitude on how you view alcohol and encourage other teens to make the same
change of opinion.
Remember that there is always someone, whether a relative or a friend that cares about your
well being. There’s an old saying, ―Think before you drink,‖ but in all reality why drink at all. What
you do with your life is much more important than alcohol.

Gritty Gangs
Staff Writer
On November, 19, 2010 Officer Lewis and Officer Hernandez paid us a visit to
tell us a little about gang violence. They told about gangs, how to avoid them, and what
they will do.
Some gangs in the Houston area are Bloods, Crips, Southwest Cholos, and
Houston Tango Blast. Some of the ways gangs show which gang they belong to is tattoos,
graffiti, clothing, symbols, hand signs, and colors. Bloods can be found wearing red,
black, and white. Their main hand sign is spelling out blood with their hands. Crypts are
usually dressed in blue and do the triple c with their hands. Houston Tango Blast usually
have tattoos of Texas or the Astros baseball sign.
Houston Tango Blast is mainly a prison gang in Houston. There are more than
4,000 members, and they typically outnumber any other prison gangs. Bloods and Crips
are rivals, and always are fighting and disrespecting each other’s gang.
Gangs will manipulate you and make you do things you would never actually
do. They tell you they are your new family, but in reality they will just use you. The point
of being in a gang is to have each other’s back even if you and your family get KILLED in
the process. Once you join the only way out is death, so don’t join a gang in the first place.
If you flee from the gang and they can’t find you, your family is next. So watch out be-
cause either outcome isn’t pleasant.
Some good alternatives of joining a gang are getting involved with after school
activities, join a club, focus on school, and meeting friends that have a positive influence.
These alternatives will set you in a more positive outlook on the future and you will be
more successful. Being a gang member is a felony and can only result in trouble. Above is a picture of graffiti done from different gangs.

World AIDS Day—World AIDS Day happens once a year on the first of December. World AIDS Day was created so
people are aware of the dangers of the AIDS virus. The virus is triggered through a virus called HIV (human immunodeficiency
virus), which breaks down the immune system, and then the virus develops and continues to depress the system, resulting in death
from a common sickness. The AIDS virus is very present in today’s society and has a huge impact on the lives of those who have
loved ones with AIDS and those with the actual virus. The virus is a long term virus, and there is no cure for HIV making it impor-
tant that people are aware and research is funded. A website has been made devoted to the advancement of AIDS treatments. The
websites name is www.worldaidsday.org. On the website you can make a pledge to the advancement of aids cures and you can
donate to the cause and to stop AIDS in its tracks!

Are you having problems with your skin or hair or do you just want to have glowing beautiful looking skin? Natural remedies
are great solutions that are cheap and easy to do!
A great solution for dry hair and dry skin is yogurt! For your hair you can put get two tablespoons of yogurt more or less
depending on how much hair you have and one tablespoon of olive oil. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes then shampoo and condition
as usual. It might feel strange at first but once it’s dry you’ll notice the difference! For your skin you can use yogurt by itself. You also
can add honey into the facial for its acne fighting power.
A great facial mask for exfoliating your skin uses green tea and sugar. Make 1/3 of a cup of green tea and take two table-
spoons out and put it into a bowl then mix in 5 tablespoons of sugar. To make it extra cleansing you can add Apple Cider vinegar.
Make sure the amount of green tea is at least twice as much as the vinegar. DON’T use regular vinegar, it can damage and burn your
skin. If you do add more green tea or vinegar, make sure to add more sugar so it can exfoliate better. You can add one teaspoon of your
own ingredient. Lemon is a good cleansing oily skin. Honey is good for its anti-acne properties.
Another great face mask for all skin types contains oatmeal, yogurt and honey. First take out 2 tablespoons of oatmeal and 3
tablespoons of yogurt and mix until it’s chunky and add one teaspoon of honey at the end. Apply to your face and leave it on for at
least 30 minutes. While you clean it off, make sure to rub your fingertips in circles to exfoliate your dead skin cells.
A great cleansing mask uses wheat flour, grapes, and baking soda. Take 4-5 grapes and squeeze the juice out, mix enough
wheat flour to make it a thick mix but not too think. Lastly add ¼ teaspoon of baking soda. Put it on your face and leave it on for 15
minutes.
A way to make your own effective pore strips is to use milk and unflavored gelatin. First get a
tablespoon of milk and one tablespoon of the unflavored gelatin. In a glass stir until it’s chunky. Next it
in the microwave for 10 seconds. Take a foundation brush that you don’t currently use and just rub it on
the area where you want to take the dirt away from. After about 10 minutes or until it’s dry, peal it off
and you’re done!
A quick and easy thing to do is to get green tea and put very little into a container, grab a cotton
ball or use your clean fingers then rub it all over your face. You don’t have to wash it off. You can mois-
turize afterwards if you wish. You can do this daily without much hassle!
Natural remedies are a growing trend among teenagers. They are fast, easy and fun!

A cornerstone of Houston’s ethnic celebrations for over four decades, the Greek Festival has
consistently provided Houstonians with terrific insight into Eastern Mediterranean culture. Founded by
one of the largest Greek-American communities in the United States, the Houston Greek Festival is,
arguably, the premier annual ethnic event in the city.
The thousands of people who attended had the opportunity to sample traditional staples of
Greek cuisine, including μπακλαβά (baklava), λοσκοσμάδες (loukoumades, a honey-soaked fried pas-
try), and, of course, the ever-popular γύρος (gyros). Event planners even dedicated a booth to one of
the greatest of all Greek inventions: Greek coffee (ελληνικός καφές).
In addition to the delectable delicacies, visitors
had an opportunity to tour the Cathedral of the Annun-
ciation, a beautiful example of a Greek Orthodox
church in the neoclassical style, watch several differ-
ent performances of Greek dancing, and shop in the
Agora (Αγορά), which was filled to capacity with
Mediterranean groceries, jewelry, icons, and souve-
nirs.
Though extremely well-known throughout
Houston, there was a noticeable dearth of awareness in
the Harmony community. There is, however, a possi-

Hard work and dedication is what drives successful people, and the same is needed to make a good score on the PSAT and the SAT.
For three juniors at our school their hard work has really shown. They are all National Merit Scholar finalist, which is a big deal
because only 100 students, scoring 215 or above are chosen for this program. The three’s scores on the PSAT are an example for us
all:
Leon Lin made a perfect score of a 240.
Ding Zhou has also done an amazing job making a score of 231, having perfect scores on math and reading.
Leelund Swanson scored a 218 on his test, with a perfect score on math.
If you see one of these students congratulate them for the achievement!

Hunger Bites : Bite Back. The Houston Food Bank Newspaper Editor in Chief
The decision to participate in a action that betters one’s community. Every time you pick up trash as
you walk down the street or donate food to food banks, you are participating in a form of community service.
There are thousands of ways to help you community. One is through donating your time, money, or resources
to an organization that actively participates in bettering a community, city, or the world.
Every student at Harmony School of Advancement needs one hundred hours of community service to
graduate. This regulation promotes students to become more involved in their community. There are many
organizations, companies, places, and activities students can participate in to be active in their communities
such as volunteering at a hospital or nursing home, starting a recycling program, or organizing food drives.
One of the many organizations that is actively trying to better our city is the Houston Food Bank. The
Houston Food Bank or HFB is a private, nonprofit organization that seeks to distribute food donations to local
charitable programs. The HFB is the largest source of food for hunger relief in 18 southeast Texas counties.
The HFB is a network of 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and senior centers, homeless shelters, and nutri-
tion sites for children and the elderly. The HFB served 65 million pounds of food last year alone; and the HFB
serves 137,000 different people each week and a total of 865,000 different people each year.
One way the Houston Food Bank raises donations is through the hosting of events like the Chevron
Houston Marathon, Hunger Action Month, Taste of the Texans, and Canstruction. Runners in the Chevron
Houston Marathon and Aramco Half Marathon helped the Houston Food Bank raise the funds to provide
129,579 meals to local Houston families. Hunger Action Month is September! With the help of the community
the Houston Food Bank bites back at hunger not only in the one fall month but all year long. The Taste of the
Texans is an event that has been hosted for the past two years in association with the Houston Texans foot-
ball team. Guest join in for an evening of football and great food to raise funds for the HFB. Another fun event
the Houston Food Bank uses to spread awareness of the people going hungry in our community and to raise
funds to help our neighbors in need is Canstruction. Canstruction is an event in early November that allows
architects, engineers, and construction professionals to show off their skills in a designing and build competi-
tion. In Canstruction groups design sculptures out of non-perishable food items which are then donated to the
Houston Food Bank for distribution.
Whether it’s running the Chevron Houston Marathon or just donating some food to the red barrels at
your local grocery store, ever little bit counts. Helping others is a fun and easy way to feel good about your
self and know you are doing good for someone else. So go and volunteer at your community soup kitchen or
start a school wide Canstruction and start helping others and gaining your community service hours.
