Teacher Evaluation of SELL Project – Helen
1. How has it helped to know the background and the education of the student?
It has been very useful, because before I would have been unaware of the student's
achievements in her previous country, and therefore not able to judge how quickly
she was likely to learn and improve her English. I had much higher expectations of
her as a result, and she has responded to these.
2. How has it helped to know the goals and aspirations of the student?
Again, knowing these has helped greatly, as I have been able to plan better and
include her individual needs and wishes in the group scheme of work. I have been
able to differentiate in the planning, and to encourage her to improve in the areas she
needs and wishes. I have been able to help her with making applications for further
education colleges.
3. How important for the teacher was it that the students could communicate in
their own language?
Very important. It was thus possible to get a true picture of what the student knew
already, and what they wanted from the classes. Also it meant that they were far
more relaxed in class, felt valued as individuals, and made closer relationships with
the language assistant and the teacher.
4. Did you carry out this type of interview before the SELL project?
Previously we had just asked the questions asked by the adult education institution
about qualifications, goals, etc. We had done these through an interpreter but not
1:1 and in private. I would certainly use a broader base of questions now having
used the SELL sheet. I feel that it is a very useful way to gather information, and
makes the students feel valued as individuals. It also means that we get to know the
individuals and their requirements much better much more quickly.
5. How did you use the information from the interviews?
I used it to inform my planning. I was able to focus on areas the students wanted
and needed, and I was able to differentiate for individual students' needs. I also
found that I felt I knew the students better, and this helped to create a better working
relationship between student and teacher.
6. How did the students react to the use of their own language in learning?
They were very appreciative, they realised that they were able to understand
concepts better, and were then able to transfer their knowledge to the new language.
They were able to check when unsure, and discuss with the language assistant and
others when there was any confusion.
7. How important has the intercultural exchange been to the learning process?
It is very useful to find out whether the students/teachers in other countries have also
experienced the same outcomes. It will be useful to share ideas and good practice.
8. What do you consider to be the most important outcomes of the SELL
project?
To highlight the need to know our students, and their experiences and aspirations.
To raise the profile of using mother tongue in language learning, especially in adult
education.
