Marshall Seymour Sandy Tooman Dear BMCA Volunteer: Prior to Keith Lockhart’s 2005 concert with the Transylvania Symphony Orchestra, he said from the stage that “…it’s a constant marvel to me to come here and see that the work remains the same, the work continues.” And so it will be in June as we usher in the Lockhart Era and begin our 72nd season. But while the work will continue, much of the behind-the-scenes portion of that work will be different this year. For thirty-three seasons, Bill Boggs worked tirelessly to make sure that each season worked. From summer photographer in 1974, to Director of Finance and Operations at the time of his death on February 3rd, he wore so many hats: sound technician for the opera company, purchasing agent, personnel manager, computer guru, architect for multiple BMC projects, general contractor, electrical contractor, BMCA volunteer, chief administrative officer, accountant, treasurer – the list is practically endless. Throughout Bill’s twenty month illness, he continued to perform as though nothing had changed. He never complained, he never whined, he never asked “why me?” he never blamed, he never indulged in self-pity. His remarkable example of courage, dedication and commitment will be an inspiration to all of us as we continue the work of teaching gifted young musicians to prepare and perform great musical works at a high artistic level. Every year, the Music Center holds a fund raising event that not only supports the scholarship and operations budgets of BMC but also raises community awareness, energizes support for the Center, heralds the opening of the Center’s performance schedule, AND gives us a chance to get dressed up in our finest and have a good time. For nearly two decades “Prelude” as been the crown jewel of Brevard’s summer social calendar as well as a workhorse event raising over $100,000 in a single night each of the last four years. This year’s Prelude committee hopes not only to do justice and homage to the long history of Preludes past, but to break new ground and set a new standard for future incarnations of this critical season opening event. Cochairs Skip and Terry Hirsh, relative newcomers to the area, have organized a team made up of long-time supporters of the center as well as fresh new faces excited to become part of the next generation of BMC supporters. The committee has two key goals for this year’s event: to raise more money for the Music Center than has ever been raised by any Prelude in the past; and perhaps equally important, to hold an event where volunteers, donors, and attendees alike can’t wait to get involved again next year. The event includes auctions, as well as a top-notch dinner, and dancing. The auctions, which feature an impressive array of art objects, in the Nashville area and a long time supporter of the Music Center. Sarah Wallace of the BMC staff rounds out the leadership team, providing infrastructure and organizational support, and much needed professional supervision. This years Prelude, which will be held slightly earlier than usual (May 31st), will have the theme of “Casablanca” with decorations and atmosphere designed to invoke the actual Moroccan city, as well as the romantic blackand-white version that Bogart and Bergman brought to life in the 1942 film. It promises to be bigger than past years with as many as 50% more seats and added tent space to give auction participants more room to wheel and deal for the many items donated for sale. The Prelude team is always interested in energetic volunteers as well as good ideas, especially in terms of one-of-a-kind auction items. Please feel free to contact any of the team members and offer support. This year promises to be a very exciting event with more celebrants, more excitement, more fund raising, and more fun. Don’t miss your chance to be part of Prelude 2008! services, and travel packages, many of which simply can’t be found at any other venue, are being organized by a team of volunteers lead by Auction Chairs Arline and Dennis Aalfs and Darlene and Jim Brindell. The event itself will be orchestrated and decorated by Terry White, a renown event planner, and florist From the Archives The Archives Committee (Michael Mclain, Phyllis Nesbitt, Chet Pletzke, George Stanton) have been organizing the archives of BMC and BMCA and electronically preserving them. Most of the BMC Overtures for each season from 1949 to 2007 have been preserved electronically. An archival database of the recordings from BMC has been developed. Additional photos, slides, news clippings, reviews about BMC and BMCA are being captured electronically. The BMCA newsletters available in the archives have been preserved electronically. The list below indicates the issues that are preserved. If you find that you have a missing issue that can be made available to the archives committee for electronic digitization, please contact the Archives committee at bmcarchives@yahoo.com. No, I’m not running for political office, although change seems to be the political buzzword this year! I’m talking about the 2008 Brevard Music Center season which promises to be an exciting summer of change, innovation and, in the words of Keith Lockhart, evolution. Look for lots of new faces this summer – both on the BMC staff and in our growing corps of volunteers. While we will deeply miss our friend Bill Boggs at concerts and on campus, we welcome new staff members Claudia Hawkins and Jason Posnok. And the BMCA newcomers’ recruitment luncheon, Michel Robertson held on March 13 at the Transylvania County Library, will generate new volunteers on many of our BMCA President committees. The most significant change at the Music Center is the retirement of David Effron and the beginning of Keith Lockhart’s tenure as Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor. At a recent Music Center Board of Trustees meeting, Mr. Lockhart enthusiastically spoke to the changes that students will experience this year. His focus will be on the educational mission of BMC and a caring, nurturing environment where students have more down time to interact with friends and faculty. An exciting educational addition will be a new high school opera voice program! Finally, your BMCA Board of Directors has re-defined and simplified the qualifications of membership in our organization. Many of you have commented that the issue of who is and who is not a member of BMCA is confusing. “Are there annual dues?” “What constitutes a member?” At one time, BMCA membership was contingent upon payment of annual dues. However, many volunteers who do not pay dues attend the annual meeting and elect BMCA officers. As we continue to grow, the Music Center administration and the BMCA Board agree that it is important to clarify and simplify the definition of membership. At a recent Board meeting changes were approved as described below. What is BMCA? BMCA is an organization of volunteers who raise money and provide services in support of the Brevard Music Center. What constitutes a “member?” A member is anyone who volunteers during the current season. Are there annual dues? No, membership in BMCA is free. If there are no dues how will BMCA cover its expenses? Our annual spring fund drive will seek financial contributions from volunteers and members of the BMC community. Funds raised will help cover the costs of the newsletter, supplies, and other operating expenses. Those who contribute will be designated as Friends of BMCA, and will receive certain benefits (such as Sneak Preview, a back-stage tour, season highlights CD’s) linked to various levels of giving. Who is invited to the Annual Meeting and dinner? Members (i.e., current volunteers) and their spouses, BMC staff and scholarship students will be invited to attend the meeting. What is the purpose of the event? The Annual Meeting is primarily a business meeting where we elect officers at the end of their terms, and celebrate the accomplishments of our members. Who pays for the dinner at the Annual Meeting? Many of you may not realize that the annual dinner is paid for by BMCA, not the Music Center. Because it is our wish to maximize our contribution to the scholarship program, and without the revenues of membership dues, the Board has decided that attendees will pay a small fee to cover the cost of the dinner. Our goal is not to make a profit, but simply to pay for our meals so that the expense does not come from our scholarship contribution. Why is attendance limited? Space, space, space. BMCA is 350 members strong and growing. Searcy Hall is the largest air-conditioned space available during the season. Several years ago, in an attempt to include more people, the meeting was held in Strauss auditorium. Those of you who attended will remember record-breaking temperatures and many complaints about the heat. The Board is working on this problem and welcomes your suggestions. A new Artistic Director, new programs, new faces and new directions. The 72nd BMC season promises to be a winner! I look forward to joining you as we “do our Solution to Crossword things” for the Music Center – fund raising, planting, selling, ushering, building, mailing, and especially appreciating the music of our gifted young musicians.
