The ability to have intelligence for answering critical questions allows an organization to think outward, thus enabling strategic thinking. Competitive Intelligence supports numerous management decisions, such as: anticipating changes in the marketplace, monitoring the competition, identifying failures & successes, evaluating target companies, researching new businesses, etc., etc., etc. My services are twofold: Provide specific competitive intelligence research on an as needed basis and assist with the development of a competitive intelligence function within your organization. 1. What is Competitive Intelligence Research? Competitive Intelligence Research (CIR) is a formal system whereby large volumes of information are filtered and transformed into intelligent information. Intelligent information allows management to make strategic decisions in a highly competitive environment. Since much of this information is external, CIR forces an organization to look outward which helps the organization deal more effectively with increasing competition; hence the name “competitive” intelligence research. 2. What are some of benefits of Competitive Intelligence Research? There are numerous benefits: Identifying new markets and products, monitoring the actions of your competition, researching potential target companies, learning more about your own organization, researching new business ventures, and whatever critical question management wants answered. 3. How does CIR work? CIR relies on two levels of information, primary and secondary. Primary sources are everything from annual reports to regulatory filings. Secondary sources are generated by a nontarget source, such as the news media. Since volumes of information are enormous, on-line research tools are often used to filter the information overload. One of the on-line tools I use for CIR is Dialog, the world’s largest on-line information retrieval system. 4. How do you develop CIR within an organization? First, I try to keep it simple. For example, the strategic plan of a competitor can be found by visiting their web site. Second, you need to be creative. For example, the Japanese often submit $ 1.00 bids on major American projects just to get information on how the process works and who is bidding. Third, you need to be independent when you draw conclusions from the information. If you force conclusions to fit decisions, than CIR will not be beneficial to your organization. Competitive Intelligence Research is one of the most powerful tools for dealing with increasing competition. It trims information overload into valuable information so that 2 management can make better decisions. If you are operating in a highly competitive environment, you need to implement Competitive Intelligence Research. 3
