Hiking Calendar, 2010 -- See NEW September hikes!



Hiking season has begun! Please make your reservations early as popular hikes are already

filling up. Information on hikes is updated several times per week, so check back regularly for

new hikes, changes and updates.



Notice Posted on June 5. If you are new to this hiking list, you will notice many hikes are marked full. Most

hikes have cancellations in the days just prior to the hike, so I encourage you to request to be on the waiting

list for any hikes of interest. If you are willing to lead hikes, please contact Rene Smith, 541 317 0831.



August Hikes



8/17 – Obsidian Trail (Strenuous) – Leslie Koc

Miles: 12 mile loop

Elevation Gain: 1,800 feet

Hiking Level: Strenuous

Wear/Bring: good tread footwear, adequate water, bug spray, layered clothes, hat, sunscreen and a sack lunch.

Group Size: 8

Meeting Place & Time: Target/ N Hwy 97 parking lot @ 8:30 AM

Permits: Obsidian Trail Use permit required – Leader will reserve the hike permit for 8

Gas: $3 for each rider

With a bit of luck and weather we could be hiking at the height of the area’s wildflowers. The terrain is as varied as the incredible views. Make

no mistake; it’s 12 miles at a quick pace. Well worth it for those looking for an exercise of your legs and eyes.



8/23 – Chambers Lake (Strenuous) Sheree Gillaspie This hike is full, email Sheree at

Miles: 14.2 miles round trip

Elevation Gain: 1800 ft

Time: approx. 5-6 hours hiking – moderate pace

Hiking Level: strenuous

Wear/Bring: good tread footwear, poles, wind jacket as it can be windy at the lake for lunch, bug spray

Group Size: 8

Meeting Place & Time: Target parking lot @ 8:30am to arrange carpools. Pick Sheree up at Sisters Coffee at 9am. Restroom at the coffee house.

Permits: Bring your recreation fee pass in case there is a driver without.

Gas: $3 for each rider

The trail starts at Pole Creek and the first 4 miles are dusty, however the rest of the hike has fabulous views of all three sisters and broken top.

There is a precarious log crossing over Whychus Creek, but is completely doable using hands, feet and even your behind if need. If there is

interest, I've always wanted to do the .8 side trail to Demaris Lake so we could add that on for 1.6 more miles. By late August we'll be in

amazing shape!



8/26 – NEW DATE!! Green Lakes via Fall Creek (Moderate) – René Smith THIS HIKE IS FULL,

Miles: 8.4 miles RT

Elevation Gain: ~1100’

Leader’s hiking style: moderate pace, ~3 mph; I stop to enjoy the views.

Additional information: This beautiful hike follows Fall Creek past a string of waterfalls a.nd ends at a gorgeous alpine lake at the foot of Broken

Top and South Sister. Toilets at the trailhead. Plan to be back in Bend by 4:00 p.m.

September Hikes



9/8 – NEW DATE Deschutes River Trail (Moderate) – Sally Watts

Deschutes River hike is a 6 mile hike both ways and about two (2) hours long. We will meet at Old Mill District outside Coldwater Creek at

7:30am and walk from there. It is an easy hike a lot of ups and downs. Nice walk with great scenery. Bring plenty of water a snack and we will

eat lunch at one of the restaurants after the hike. To sign up call Sally Watts at (541) 647-9851 or email sally.watts65@gmail.com. I can take as

many as 10 people so sign up ASAP.

9/13 NEW! Tam McArthur Rim

Hiking Level: Moderate

Elevation Gain: 1200 ft

Leader’s hiking style/pace: moderate to slower

What to wear/bring: plenty of water, snack and lunch

Group size maximum: 12

Meeting Place/Time: 9:00 a.m. Meeting place provided with RSVP response

Costs: $3 (riders from Bend)- $1 (riders from Sisters) + (optional) $ for coffee/snacks at the coffee house

Additional information: Beautiful and breath taking views of Broken Top and the Three Sisters. Toilet at the trailhead.

We'll stop at the sister's Coffee company coming and going, to pick up hikers from the Sisters area, to get coffee/snacks, and

to use the restrooms.

This hike takes you on a tour of Paula Lake in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

Distance: 7.5 Mile loop

Approximate Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours

Elevation Gain: 230 Feet

Trail Surface_ Gravel Path, Dirt Path and Paved Road

This hike circles Paula Lake. The route takes you past prime swimming beach, piles of shiny black obsidian and stellar views of Paula Peak.





9/24 NEW! Smith Rock, Misery Ridge

Hike Name: Smith Rock---- over Misery Ridge

Hiking Level: Strenuous

Miles: 4 mile loop

Elevation Gain: 800 ft. up over ridge then 500 ft. back up to parking lot

Leader’s hiking style/pace: moderate to slower

What to wear/bring: Boots with good tread and hiking poles for descending switchbacks (they are rather slippery)

Group size maximum: 8

Meeting Place/Time: 9:00 a.m. and meeting place provided with RSVP response

Costs: $3 for each rider + $ for icecream

Additional information: Toilets at trailhead. The beginning of the hike down to the river and up over Misery Ridge is the

challenging part then we just follow along the river which is flat and then again a good ascent back up to the parking lot. May

be a challenge if you have trouble with your knees. We will just take it slow and steady. Wonderful views at the top of Misery

Ridge. After the hike we will stop for icecream at the climbing store just outside the park..... always huckleberry for me.





9/24 – Clear Lake/McKenzie River (Moderate) – René Smith THIS HIKE IS FULL, EMAIL RENE IS

Miles: ~8 miles

Elevation Gain: ~600’

Leader’s hiking style: moderate pace, ~3 mph; I stop to enjoy the views.

What to wear/bring: plenty of water, snack, lunch

Group size maximum: 8

Meeting Place/Time: Provided with RSVP response

Costs: $4 + (optional) $ for pie at the lodge (if available…)

Additional information: This is a beautiful autumn-color hike around a beautiful lake on the west side of Santiam Pass. We’ll combine this loop

with a 2.6-mile walk around Sahalie and Koosah Falls on the McKenzie River. Sometimes the lodge at the lake offers homemade pie. Fingers

crossed! Toilets at the lodge. We probably won’t be back to Bend before 5:00 p.m.





October Hikes



10/6 – Metolius River(Easy/Moderate) – Rene McCulley & Rynda Clark

Mileage/Hiking Level – 1) Easy Hike – 5.4 round trip, moderate pace, 2)Moderate hike – 11.8 round trip, quick pace Moderate hike if FULL.

Group Size: 6 for Easy group, 6 for Moderate group

Meeting Place & Time: Target/N Hwy 97 @ 8:30 AM. We will create car pools at Target.

Wear/Bring: Adequate water, snacks, lunch, quarters for fish food at hatchery. Wear shoes with good tread, wet trails can be slippery.

Gas: $3 each to be divided between the drivers.

RSVP: RSVP required by Monday, Sept 4. You will be confirmed. Email Rene for beginning hike renegmc@bendbroadband.com. Email Rynda for

moderate hike at rynda@bendbroadband.com. Rynda’s cell for last minute changes is 760 445-8653.

Both hikes will begin at Canyon Creek Campground, the West Metolius Trailhead. The easy hike will go to the Wizard Falls fish hatchery, have

lunch or a snack, and return the same way. The moderate hike will continue along the Metolius to Lower Bridge Campground, have lunch, and

then return the same way. This is one of the most beautiful hikes I have done in Oregon. Bring your camera.





10/15 – Tam-a-lau Trail at Cove Palisades (Culver) (Moderate) – René Smith THIS HIKE IS FULL,

Hiking Level: Easy

Miles: ~6 miles RT

Elevation Gain: ~700’ (1.9-mile climb)

Leader’s hiking style: moderate pace, ~3 mph; I stop to enjoy the views.

What to wear/bring: plenty of water, snack, lunch

Group size maximum: 8

Meeting Place/Time: Provided with RSVP response

Costs: $3

Additional information: We’ll hike up to The Peninsula, where a 3.6-mile loop tours the cliff-edged desert mesa in the midst of Billy Chinook

Reservoir. Toilets at the trailhead. Plan to be back in Bend by 4:00 p.m.
