Research Ethics: Cases and Commentaries Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7
Brian Schrag, Editor
Since 1996, the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics has worked with seven cohorts of graduate students and post
doctoral fellows in the physical, natural and social sciences as well as engineering from over sixty research universities on a
project in research ethics education funded by the National Science Foundation (Grant Numbers SBR-9421897 and SES-
9817880). One byproduct of the work has been case studies and commentaries written by participants, generally drawing on
their own experience. Workshop-faculty have added their commentaries to the cases.
The seven volumes include 101 cases in research ethics, along with commentaries, on a wide variety of topics which are
suitable for use in the undergraduate and graduate classroom as well as for discussions in seminars on research ethics and for
faculty development. Most cases involve some morally problematic behavior in research, but some cases involve analysis of
someone “doing the right thing.”
Individual cases focus on a variety of topics, including student-mentor relations, authorship credit, whistle blowing, conflict of
interest, issues in research using human subjects, and intellectual property. Volume Seven focuses on research in the social
sciences and includes cases dealing with research on groups, research with indigenous peoples, encountering criminal behavior
in the course of research, invasion of privacy, use of students in research, the IRB and social science research, conflicting roles
of researchers, and research on the internet.
The cost of each volume is $17.00, which includes shipping costs within the U.S. Shipping for foreign addresses varies.
Please contact us to obtain foreign shipping costs. Remittance is payable in U.S. dollars only. You may purchase the entire set
of seven volumes for a discounted rate of $115.00. The cost of the GREE Handbook “How to Survive Graduate School and
Start Your Career in Science/Engineering” is $10.00, which includes shipping costs within the U.S.
