APA Works Cited Format
What is APA Style?
American Psychological Association (APA) style is one of several styles for academic
writing. It is used in psychology and other social sciences, including sociology and
th
anthropology. The following style guide is based on the APA 6 Edition. Note that
punctuation and italicized font matters.
General Works Cited Format:
Books
Author, A. A. (Year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for
subtitle. Location: Publisher.
Articles
Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year). Title of article. Title
of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages.
Internet Article
Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article.Title of
Online Periodical, volume number(issue number if available). Retrieved on
(Retrieval Date), Retrieved from http://www.someaddress.com/full/url/
Internet Website (General) – Include as many of the details as possible. Not all websites are well annotated.
Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of document.
Retrieved on (Retrieval Date), Retrieved from http://Web address on Date
Please note that when there is no author to be found the Editor or Publishing Company’s name is
used instead at the beginning.
In-Text Citation
The following is an example of how to use the author’s name, publication date and page number
to do and embedded on in-text citation. In the case of a website or online article without page
numbers the page number is omitted.
She stated, "Students often had difficulty using APA style" (Jones, 1998, p.199), but she did not offer an explanation as
to why.
Goodman (1986) found that technology was even more important than social arrangements.
Results from early research indicated that technology was more important than differences
in social arrangements (Goodman, 1986).
