TITLE: Liver Detox Diet
BODY:
Did you know that the liver is one of the most important organs in a person’s body? The liver plays a
major role in detoxifying chemicals and substances that pass through the body. It has a natural
mechanism of recognizing foreign materials, known as toxins, and functions by excreting them through
sweat, urine and feces. Toxins are always entering our bodies. They can be found in the unhealthy
foods we eat(processed/artificial rich food), the alcohol we drink, cigarettes we smoke, found in poor
diet, drug use such as antibiotic therapy and hormone replacement drugs. These are just some of the
toxins our livers work on eliminating every day.
The more harmful substances that are introduced to the body, the more the liver has to work to keep
up, even to the point it can’t keep up anymore. When this happens, toxins can accumulate in the body
and cause problems and eventually lead to disease. This all can be prevented by taking care of our liver
which is why a liver detox diet can be so beneficial to one’s health.
Depending on preference, a liver detox diet can be done on a 3, 7 or 21 day program. This program
follows a stern focus on a diet of raw, organic fruits, vegetables and whole grains with the addition of
water therapy. Sufficient amounts of water or fluid replacement can be used. Items and food to be
excluded are those that are high in fat and or sugar, processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, junk food and
drugs, preferably for one week before the planned diet as well as during the diet period.
7 Day Liver Detox Diet
1-3 days – This is the time to start with liquid diet. Drink approximate 10-12 glasses of water each day
with freshly squeezed lime juice. This period can be difficult for some because it can cause fatigue and
weakness while the toxins are flushed out from the body. Adding light exercise such as walking can
hasten this process. Remember that milk or any dairy products are excluded from being used.
4-6 days- During this time raw fruits and vegetables together with whole grains can be used. Celery,
oranges, apples and carrots can be prepared as juice. Depending on what your choices are, you can mix
and match vegetables and fruits. Even though solid foods are used here, fluids are still continued with
substitutes, you can have herbal teas 2-3 times a day. Meals can be composed of vegetables that are
chopped and boiled. Broth can be used, drinking it every three hours. Broccoli, carrots, spinach or
celery are just some of the examples.
7 day- The fluids are still continued together with the vegetables and fruits. These can be prepared raw
or steamed. Rosemary tea and dandelion supplements are also good during this time.
You can modify the fruits and vegetables as long as the concept is followed. After the seventh day, the
normal diet can be resumed but still with the restriction of alcohol use. This restriction can last for one
week after fulfilling the diet. To be safe, consult a medical practitioner before beginning any diet.
Immediately stop the diet if you experience any symptoms like pain, nausea or vomiting. The Liver
detox diet is an excellent part of developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
