					6th Grade Exploratory Curriculum Guide
        This curriculum guide provides an overview of the content of the 6th grade
World languages program. This course meets for one quarter-approximately 40
class periods. French is taught the first 20 class sessions, and Spanish is taught
during the remaining 20 sessions. Students use the workbook Discovering
Languages: French and Discovering Languages: Spanish in class. Students are
not allowed to take these workbooks home as they are a classroom set only to
be used by 6th graders each quarter.
        All dates and course content are tentative. Some activities and projects
may have to be omitted or rescheduled due to special events scheduled during
the World language time slot and/or the students’ pace of the particular section.

French Segment (First half of quarter)
Cultural/General information:
Students will build linguistic background- Languages of Europe lesson.
Students will be aware of geographical proximity of countries speaking French.
Discovering French   Chapter 1
Students will understand the meaning of term “cognate,” and identify
Cognates, as they occur in new vocabulary. Discovering French Chapter 2
Students will learn the alphabet (French) and receive pronunciation guide.
Students will compare French ways of life to their own: School days, gestures,
holidays, displays of respect. Discovering French Chapters 3, 6, 9
Dialogue/Listening Comprehension:
Students will use courtesies/salutations in French. Discovering French, Chs 3, 4
Students will count 1-40. Discovering French, Ch 4
Students will review days of week, months, #1-31 through issuance of new
monthly calendar. Discovering French Chs 5, 6
Students will be able to request to leave the room for multiple
       purposes in target language- Poster in classroom.
Students will use the correct pronunciation of command vocabulary.
Students will learn vocabulary pertaining to class objects, and identify items
using the correct pronunciation. Chapter 7
Reading/Writing:
Students will write skits with vocabulary from Chapter 3-9.
Students will create a calendar of their birth month. Chapter 4-7
        Student will use the “vous” and “tu” forms, appropriately.
Student will design a poster of class commands/ Students will design a poster,
“Dans la salle de classe.”
Students will write (in English) a summary of the benefits of learning French.
Grammar:
Students will be introduced to gender/articles. (the, a, an, some)
Students will identify the appropriate article for nouns.
Spanish segment (second half of quarter)

names.
Students will be aware of geographical proximity of countries speaking
       Spanish. Discovering Spanish Chapter 1
