Dubuque 2.0 VISION
Inspiring sustainability. Dubuque 2.0 is a venue where sustainable ideas are presented,
best practices are shared, and results from the community’s efforts are measured.
Much like Envision 2010, Dubuque 2.0 is a community engagement process focused
on sustainability.
With this initiative, Dubuque is taking a unique approach by supplying people with the
tools and information necessary to measure and manage their utilization. This knowledge
will empower people to make educated choices to change behavior, reducing their costs
and identifying long-lasting sustainable opportunities.
Dubuque 2.0 will build on the community’s existing sustainability plan developed
by a Citizen Taskforce at the call of Mayor Buol and the Dubuque City Council.
By combining our strengths with new opportunities in our future we can make our
community economically prosperous, socially and culturally vibrant, and improving
our environmental integrity. Dubuque 2.0 will use this toolkit as one of many tools to
engage businesses, schools, non-profits, and neighborhoods in sustainability. Dubuque 2.0
offers opportunities where all may learn and choose to take action to save money and resources,
open new markets, reduce our impact on the planet, and improve the competitiveness
of the community. To promote and showcase our community successes, everyone will

have the opportunity to share their efforts and results, encouraging local best practices
and new ideas.

sustainability tips for
your home
Use your windows wisely
Keep your windows clean and open the blinds in the day
to allow sunlight to naturally warm your house. Close
the blinds at night to keep the natural heat in.

your house and the environment.

and appliances to bathroom surfaces and walls.

oz. spray bottle.
2. Fill the rest with very hot water and shake to blend
until the borax is dissolved.

3. Add 1/4 cup of liquid castile soap only after you’ve
completed the above steps (optional).
4. If you want to scent your spray, also add 10–15 drops
of an essential oil, such as lavender, lemongrass,
thyme, eucalyptus, rosemary, rose, or clove.
5. The spray will keep indefinitely. For an even simpler
solution, try cleaning with two cups of club soda in
a spray bottle.

JOuRNaL LOg
On the following pages you will find log sheets to help you create a sustainability journal for your
home. Use this log to mark down your daily activities around the house and keep track of your
behaviors such as the water you use, the food you throw away, and the energy you consume from
the appliances you use or that are kept plugged in.
Logging all your data will help you understand daily habits as well as recognizes areas available for
you to save energy, money, food, and resources.
For example, knowing that you’ve been taking 15 minute showers can help you reduce that time
to maybe 12 minutes showers, saving 12 gallons of water in just those 3 minutes. As well, you may
notice the amount of food you’re throwing away each week. So, next time you go to the grocery
store, you know to purchase less, saving waste and money.
Review your logs weekly or monthly and you’ll start to notice the improvements and savings you
acquire from week to week.
Tear out the following journal pages and post in each room of your home to log your activities.
If you fill up your log sheets, be sure to visit www.dubuque2.org to print more sheets and
other materials as you need them. If you can’t access them on the web, please feel free to call
