A Talk time

Strong and weak pronunciations for auxiliary verbs

The auxiliary verbs like do, does, have, has, were

and was have strong and weak pronunciations.

Things to remember:

When we ask questions or make statements, we usually

stress the main verb and give the auxiliary verb a weak

pronunciation. When we give short answers to questions,

we usually stress the auxiliary verb and give it a strong

pronunciation.

— I have got a guitar. Have you got one?

/hæv/ /hæznt/

— Yes, I have, but Joe hasn’t.

A1 Listen to these sentences. Circle all the auxiliary

verbs and judge whether they are given a strong or

weak pronunciation.

Arranging an interview
