Hottest Tip: How to get the most diamond for the money
If a person is interested in acquiring a diamond of approximately 2cts it is wise to reduce the weight by
15%, and the diamond will still appear almost the same. When buying diamond, it is priced per carat
weight. There is a major price jump next to the 2ct mark. Similarily, if you are looking for a 1ct, then
reduce its weight to ¾ carat, and the price is cut in half. You may notice some difference in the size
when doing this but in reality, you may be simply replacing a 6.5mm diamond with a diamond that
measured 6mm. In this way, the appearance of the ring wouldn’t change if the ring itself remained
unchanged. If the ring has a number of smaller diamonds one can do a special order ring made that
retains the same style and same number of diamonds but reduces their total weight. For example if a
ring consist of a large number of 1/5 ct diamonds one can create a ring with 1/6th carat diamonds and
substantially reduce the cost without significantly affecting it appearance.
Handmade unique engagement rings
The urge to have a handmade unique engagement ring made is very common. It reflects the desire to
express the uniqueness of every relationship. Where it is very common for the man to shop for the
engagement ring without his fiancée, it is not advisable to go it alone when having custom engagement
rings done. Usually the couple has a design idea that can then be produced. At other times they may like
to be shown a number of existing designs from which they could make their selection.

create your own engagement rings: The Process
            1. It begins with a design in free hand, or a computerized rendering of the proposed
design. A wax model of the design would then be carved. The wax model can be
handmade, or it could be computer assisted.

            2. The wax model serves two purposes: It is a three dimensional illustration of the
rendering, and gives the engagement couple a near perfect ring model to examine.

            3. Next is a very important step, you will want to go in and exam this wax model.

            4. The wax model is then used for the precious metal casting, placed within an investment
media, burned out, and the precious metal is then injected into the form of the ring.

            5. The form is filed, and polished, and then gemstones are set in the finished piece.

Before you submit your designs

You may want to review some of nuances of certain gemstones, simulants or settings. For instance, when to use a
bezel or tension setting, as well as considerations when reviewing diamond clarity and grading charts to select
diamonds, gemstones, and precious metals in order to make a wise and unforgettable ring for generations to

You may consider using gemstones in your ring, which can be very striking, and offer a variety of options
for your most creative designs.

The inventory is endless when you create your own engagement rings. Throughout these pages you will
learn from us the steps and skills that you will need to design a one of a kind piece of jewelry.
Questions to consider:
First of all you will want to consider the styles you are leaning toward. Do you want matching wedding
ring sets, or complimentary.

Do you want to make a gents ring as well? If so, do you want it to be complimentary to the ladies
engagement or wedding band?

You will then need to discover the advantages and disadvantages of certain ring styles.

Will you use a diamonds or gemstones in your or rings, and if so, what shape will they be? Will they
alternate, rounds and emerald cut? Will they be channel set, prong set or bezel?

How to build your own engagement ring
There are many reasons for choosing to create your own jewelry but, the primary one is that it is a very
personal item that involves a lot of emotion, and is something you will have for a very long time.

The process to build your own engagement ring involves many steps. The process can be simplified by
keeping several important points in mind. One should always begin with the gemstone.

Step one: Select your gemstone
Select a gemstone that will be the primary focus of the ring (unless of course the use of a primary
gemstone is not contemplated). One should know ahead of time whether you will use a diamond or
some other colored gemstone . They should know what shape they want, and what size they would like
to have. The reason for focusing first on the primary gemstone is that the ring should be made to focus
on or flatter the gemstone. One should not try and fit the gemstone into the ring design. In other words
the ring design should always accommodate the gemstone rather than the other way around.

Step two: Choose ring style
The second step in the process is to get ideas of the ring style. A good way to do this is to look at ring
magazines and browse retail stores, acquaintance rings, and internet sites. When visiting stores it is a
good idea to actually try some rings on to get a sense whether some styles seem to flatter your finger or
hand more than others. Most people discover that certain styles appeal to them more than others.
Hopefully these are the same styles that are most flattering when they are being worn.

Step three: Select the style of setting
Special attention should be paid to the method of setting any gemstones that will be placed in the ring.
Sometimes the gemstones are set off of the ring in which case crowns or bezels (crown styles are
distinguished as crowns and they can consist of three or more prongs) four and six prong being the most

Another style of crown is the basket crown. The high base or (narrow) crown consists of peg style, high
base, and low base. These are crowns found in your typical tiffany ring. At other times the ring styles
display gemstones down even with the metal surface. In this case, the settings are referred to as
channel setting, or burnished setting.

Step four: Consider the metal
The fourth consideration is to know what kind of metal one intends to use in the ring. These metal
choices usually include: silver, gold (white or yellow), palladium, platinum, tungsten, and titanium.

Step five: Choose a jeweler
After the range of styles has been narrowed down, the process of individualizing a style that can be
pictured in the mind is to be made. At this point you can select a reputable jewelry designer who can
help you move the image that is in your mind onto a piece of paper and eventually execute it in a three
dimensional form, such as a wax model or 3d image rendering of the ring.

Step six: Develop a sketch
When you are satisfied that the sketch properly represents the image in your mind you can instruct the
jeweler to make a three dimensional wax model. Depending upon the jeweler’s schedule, this can take
between several days and several weeks.

Step seven: Examine and refine the wax model
When the wax model has been produced it is important to examine it before production before the
process proceeds any further. You might notice small details that you will want to change. Small changes
can be made to the wax model by hand without having to redo the entire process. If the details to be
changed are minor, it may not be necessary to examine the model again before proceeding with

Once you have decided that the model is exactly what you had in mind, you can instruct the jeweler to
cast the model. This means that the model will then be used to create the exact form that will be cast
into the metal you have chosen. In this way the final ring is an exact copy of the wax model you have
examined. . At this point the jeweler may ask for a down payment on the ring. If your intention is to
have a one of a kind design, you will not want to have a mold made of your ring. If the mold is made
than of course your ring can be reproduced and your ring is no longer a one of kind piece. The other
thing you can do is instruct the jeweler to make a mold that you can take possession of. Your motive in
doing this might be your concern with the need to reproduce the ring should your original ever be lost.

Step eight: Polishing the ring and setting the stones
Once the jeweler has cast the ring she/he will need to clean up the rough casting by filing and polishing
and of course setting any stones that you have selected to go into the ring. The final step in building
your own engagement ring is maintenance. So far we have been focusing on the acetic aspect of
building your own engagement ring. There are however practical considerations that should not be
overlooked. Practical considerations involve issues of maintenance, durability, and wear ability. Styles
that contain a large number of very small diamonds are obviously less trouble free, than rings that
contain fewer small diamonds. Gemstones that are set higher off the ring are theoretically more
vulnerable to damage than stones that are set down in the ring. Some designs harbor dust and oils
easier than others. When rings easily accumulate dirt and oils they will not look as nice that rings that
are relatively less hospitable to these substances. Rings that contain parts that are too thin break easier
than rings that have a more durable construction. An example of a less durable ring would be some of
the filigree styles.

What metal will you use for your engagement rings? Will you have the same color bands In your ring
designs? For example: one yellow gold, and one white gold?

Once you have a good idea of the style of rings, you can contact a jewelry designer.

Diamond wedding ring sets
When looking for diamond wedding ring sets it is customary for people to think in terms of matching
an engagement ring with a wedding band. Some people however, may decide they would like to design
their own wedding ring sets. . In this case, there is an inexhaustible selection of designs to be created.
This process of designing your diamond wedding ring sets can be an extremely rewarding and emotional

The engagement ring is usually viewed as being one part of a set. The complete set would include the
engagement ring and the wedding band. Two rings can either be matching or simply complement one
another. Since the engagement ring usually contains a center diamond the diamond wedding ring sets
will never completely match. Often they consist of similar lines, and the same number of accent stones
whenever that is the case.

Buying diamond wedding ring sets together
Frequently your diamond wedding ring sets are bought at the same time. If it is not bought at the same
time then people have to anticipate what type of wedding band people will have at a later date because
this could have a bearing on the selection of the engagement ring.

It is useful to keep in mind how it will change the appearance of the engagement ring. If someone
chooses a wide engagement ring like 5mm that looks nice on the finger by itself. It could end up being
much too wide when a matching wedding band is added. This would make a 10mm wide ring. A ring can
become uncomfortable to wear at that point. This is particularly the case if the person should
subsequently decide to have more than one wedding band. For example: sometimes people decide to
have matching wedding bands that fit on both side of the engagement ring. However, you may want to
taper them more on the bottom of the shank so as to appear wider on top of the finger but, have a
more comfortable ring width under your ring finger.

Another reason for having some idea about what kind of wedding band to have gone with the
engagement ring is that the overall width of the two rings has an effect on the appearance of the center
diamond in the engagement ring. A diamond of a particular weight may look appropriate on a particular
width wedding band but then appear to be overwhelmed when the wedding band or bands are added.
For example a 3mm engagement ring, and 3mm band equals 6mm. This is approximately the same
width as a 1 carat diamond. This would be a nice balance because the bands would not be larger than
the diamond.

Sets that compliment rather than match
It is probably more common for the diamond wedding ring sets to be complimentary rather than
matching. For example: A wedding band in addition to having a center diamond can have a row or rows
of smaller accent diamonds. The wedding band that goes with it may not need to have any accent
diamonds at all. In fact, the reverse is perhaps more often the case where the wedding band has the
accent diamonds. And the diamond consists mainly of the center set stone.

When the engagement and wedding band contains smaller accent diamonds they are usually
constructed in rows that are referred to as channel settings. Most often this prescribes the shapes of the
diamonds and usually limits those shapes to rounds and princess cuts. A more recent innovation that
seeks to separate the accent diamonds one from the other is to burnish them in the band. Either
randomly or at spaced intervals.

One should not overlook the unique look that can be obtained by using colored precious stones as
accents in diamond wedding ring sets. Another variation is to use a precious colored stone as the
solitaire in the engagement ring and compliment its look with diamond accent stones. This is not done
frequently but does create a very desirable and individual look when it is done deliberately and with
good design.

Although it is usually the case, it is not absolutely necessary that in the case where gold is being used in
your ring sets that you use the same color in both rings. You may choose to have yellow gold in one and
white gold in the other.

It is common for one to solder the diamond wedding ring sets together after they couple is married.
Whether or not one anticipates soldering the rings together can have a bearing on wedding band
selection in some cases. An example of this would be: a wedding band that has a row of diamonds
placed in it. When one knows ahead of time whether they intend to solder the rings together they won’t
be as concerned about the length of the channel as they might otherwise be. Because when the rings
are soldered together the wedding band will not spin on the finger, and the channel will always be
positioned properly on the finger.
Make your own wedding ring
complimentary or matching
The wedding band should not stand out as looking like something too different and unrelated to the
engagement ring. This does not mean that if the engagement ring does not have accent stones then the
wedding band cannot have accent stones either. By the same token if the engagement ring does have
accent stones it does not mean that the wedding band must have accent stones. The lines of the
wedding ring do not have to match in order to produce harmony but, should be considered in making
the jewelry design. The wedding ring band will not have stones that are of large size because they
should not compete with the major stone in the wedding ring.

By and large the metals in the wedding ring and is corresponding band should match. For example if the
engagement ring is platinum the wedding ring should be platinum as well. If the engagement ring is
white gold, the wedding ring should also be white gold. Although in some cases mixing gold colors might
be appropriate.

The engagement ring and the wedding ring are usually worn together on the same finger. However, it is
not unheard of for someone to decide to wear their wedding ring on a different finger. For example:
Someone might choose to wear their wedding ring on the fourth finger of their right hand. This
possibility should not be overlooked if on feels that they are restricted in the style of the wedding ring
they wish to make. This might also be the case when people feel that any wedding ring regardless of
style takes away from the engagement ring.

Unusual engagement rings
People make some unusual engagement rings, such as: dandelions entwined, string cheese, rubber
bands, garbage bag ties, and bubble gum machine prize. Seriously though, there are many people who
are looking for engagement rings that are not standard like the Tiffany’s solitaire.

Unusual engagement rings can be thought of in at least two ways:

o One refers to the design.
o A second would refer to the meaning that the design has for a person.
An example would be an engagement ring that expresses a couple’s Christian faith. In the first category
people are interested in unusual design and prefer to have something that no one else has. The best
way to achieve this is for them to design their own. Here the emphasis is simply aesthetic. The form or
style appeals to them but, they may not know why, other than it looks good on their hand.

When the unusual refers to the meaning the design has for them, then its individuality is less important.
The most common theme here is reference to religious values. Here again the person can either design a
ring with a view to its meaning, or they can select a preexisting style because that particular style speaks
to them meaningfully.

Male engagement rings
Today the overwhelming color choice in engagement rings for men is white. This has been true since
about the mid 90’s and shows no alternating significant trends to date. In this case there is a large
selection of metals and designs to choose from.

Metals used in engagement rings for men include: gold, platinum, silver,
titanium and tungsten.

When selecting engagement rings for men, one should first determine the metal one would prefer.

The overwhelming majority of people choose gold. This is typically either 14k gold or 18k gold.
Gold rings are very resilient and for this reason they are the most accepted choice in
engagement rings for men. We will try to give some breakdown of the different metals,
gemstones, and styles for male engagement rings.
Gold is the most popular metal chosen in engagement rings for men. . The gold is usually 14k or
18k, but 10k is also functional and is a reasonably priced choice. It can be either yellow or white
gold. It may also come in more subtle colors like rose and green. Gold is very strong and it can
be resized, should that be required at a later time.

Platinum engagement rings on the other hand are also a popular choice for men. It has most of
all of the same wear ability features as the gold rings. Its principle disadvantage is price. At
current metal prices platinum can be two to three times that of gold. The reason for this price
difference between platinum and gold is that platinum has more mass and is priced higher than
gold on a weight basis. Platinum is also a pure metal and gold is an alloy.

Silver like platinum can only be worn as a white metal. It is lighter in weight and is not as strong
structurally as either gold or platinum. It also tarnishes much quicker and to a greater extent
than gold. Platinum on the other hand does not tarnish at all. Silver is very inexpensive.

Titanium and tungsten are two other somewhat popular metals for male engagement rings.
They are very durable and they are lightweight. The lightness of the weight is appealing for men.
It is also appealing to men for use as a wedding band because like silver it is very inexpensive.
Compared to either white gold or platinum, the whiteness of titanium and tungsten has a
cooler, harder, and darker look and may appeal to those who prefer a modern or industrial look
         and feel.

The significant disadvantage of tungsten or titanium in male engagement rings is that it cannot be
resized. When and if it no longer fits, a new band needs to be acquired.

If you include all of the possibilities mentioned above, prices would range between 50 and 1000$ for a
plain men’s band without any gemstones.

Gemstones in men’s rings
There are some people who would like to have gemstones included within their engagement rings, this
may be due to their desire to compliment the woman’s band, or just prefer a more interesting look.
Diamond is the most popular choice in this regard. However, precious stones like: Sapphire, ruby, and
emerald should not be discarded.

Our top recommendations for practical reasons include ruby and sapphire. Both of these gemstones are
very durable because they are corundum which is the hardest mineral next to diamond. Sometimes
people choose other gemstones because of their color preferences or its symbolic meaning. It is
reasonable to suppose that these other gemstones will show wear after years of use.

Gemstones used in male engagement rings do not have to be restricted to straight lines like you would
find in a square or a rectangular shape, but men also wear shapes cut in circular shapes like round or
oval. The gemstones may either be faceted, finished as a cabochon, or slab inlayed flush with the
Diamond is the most popular gemstone of choice in men’s engagement rings when deciding to include

If you are designing to incorporate your Christian values within your jewelry design than emerald should
not be discounted. This stone is a popular choice in wedding rings because emerald signifies new life, as
in the beginning of a marriage.

The cross of light diamond can also be used when designing for Christian symbolism. Diamonds or
gemstones can be set alternating between the stones and channel set around the band rather than a

Often when selecting a center stone for engagement rings for men it is desirable and considered more
masculine to have a relatively low base setting, or completely flush to its base. Gemstones used in male
engagement rings do not have to be restricted to straight lines like you would find in a square or a
rectangular shape, but men also wear shapes cut in circular shapes like round or oval. The gemstones
may either be faceted, finished as a cabochon, or slab inlayed flush with the setting.

Men’s diamond wedding bands
Some may prefer to have men’s diamond wedding bands custom made. In this case you will want to
consider some of these options, if you haven’t already done so.

Mens diamond wedding bands can be either a single diamond or it can be a number of diamonds. One
popular style is to set a number of diamonds adjacent to one another in a row. This is often times
referred to as channel setting. These could be diamond or colored gemstone. This is a very classy look
and has unlimited possibilities for individualization.

For purposes of jewelry design it is advisable to look at color combinations in ring magazines, retail
shops, and the internet. When considering the use of colored gemstones and diamonds it is possible to
put a row or rows of gemstones ½,3/4 or full circle (eternity) around the band. Creating rows with
alternating gemstones can create a very unique look. Most often precious stones are recommend for
their durability. These include: diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald.

Solitaire men’s diamond wedding bands
Another popular style is to set a single stone in the wedding band. Sometimes it is set into a separately
cast plate which is inlayed in the ring. If the plate is white gold and larger than what is needed to set the
diamond this is what is referred to as an illusion setting.

In any case, whether the ring contains a number of channel set diamonds or a single diamond the
diamonds usually are set flush or nearly so with the surface of the ring. This is unlike diamond settings in
women’s rings where crowns are frequently used. This does not mean that men’s wedding bands cannot
contain diamonds set in at least low style crowns but, this is not the most typical style that is being used.

When using diamonds in the men’s band, the shape of the diamonds need not be limited to straight
lines as are found in the emerald cuts. Round diamonds are just as popular. In principal, there are no
shape or size limitations but rather, cost is the most likely the determining factor.

Diamond band widths
The overall width of men’s band can vary based on the groom’s preference. Typically men’s diamond
wedding bands are made where their width is not less than 3mm or more than 10mm. The most popular
width is 6mm. The groom’s width preference will no doubt be based on finger size and shape as well as
his stylistic preferences.

His and hers matching wedding bands
Some couples have an interest in diamond wedding ring sets or at least rings that complement each
other. This can be as simple as matching the color of the metal, and it can be as complicated as having
rings that have a similar style appearance. It is not uncommon for people who want to deliberately
create complimentary rings to have them custom made. This may involve a little more cost. The benefit
is a much more unique and individualized result that could be very meaningful and engage them in a
process that is much more memorable. Sometimes couples are lucky enough to find conventional stock
designs that represent their personalities and relations perfectly. Click here to read more on how to

Diamond clarity chart facts
The diamond grading laboratories seek to describe how many imperfections, and what kind of
imperfections a diamond has. This is important because it affects a diamonds value. Diamond grading is
somewhat subjective and so it needs to be recognized that diamond clarity grades will not always be
replicated. When graders examine diamonds for clarity they place them in categories.

The most common structure of the diamond clarity chart is the familiar flawless, VVS,VS,SI,etc…
Obviously, not all diamonds in each category are equal. Within each category some diamonds have
better clarity then others. It is for this reason that certificates describing diamond quality are not 100%
transparent. However, generally speaking the pricing of diamonds does not reflect these subtleties.

In most cases the public pays for a diamond based on the category it is placed in, rather than whether
the diamond ranks high or low within that category. It is due to this lack of transparency that most
consumers can be well served working with someone who can select the best diamond for them.
The diamond clarity chart and Diamond education

Clarity determines price because stones with fewer flaws are rarer. Some flaws you can see and some
you cannot see with the naked eye.

Color- the most expensive diamonds are the ones that are pure white. As soon as they take on a little
tint of yellow, the less expensive they become. Most people prefer white diamonds if they can afford
them. If you want a diamond that does not show any yellow you should stay above the letter “J” on the

Carat- larger diamonds are more costly but, remember that size is not everything. Just get what you can
afford and remember that the meaning the diamond holds for you is much more important than
whether or not it is going to impress somebody for its magnitude.

Cutting – An ordinary 58 facet diamond is only cut once, because there is nothing unique about it. In
order for a diamond to be a cold it needs to be recut in order to create the special design that results in
the extraordinary brilliance of this new 69 facet diamond.
Diamond Cuts
Specialty cuts: The Cross of Light
This diamond clarity chart illustrates only high quality 58 facet conflict free diamonds. The Cross of Light
Diamonds is selected upon these parameters specified in the above diamond clarity chart. Once
selected, they are sent to one of three master diamond cutters around the world. It is only these highly
specialized diamond cutters that have been able to obtain the precision cutting that is required for each
Cold. This process takes several days to perfect and is cut individually, buy hand, to perfection. Although
the diamond loses additional weight in this process, it has created the pattern that holds special
meaning for a great many people and, in many cases improves the light performance of the original. The
motive of this diamond design requires nothing less than the unsurpassed splendor. Re-cutting to this
pattern exceeded the light performance of other well known cuts. So to us this diamond is not only the
most meaningful diamond in the world but, also the most beautiful.

Shapes and Cuts
Cushion Cut

Cushion cuts have become much more popular in recent years. They are essentially square
diamonds with rounded edges. The cut proportion parameters are not as specific as they are
with the standard round brilliant. Consequently, anyone seriously contemplating using their
cushion cut diamond for their engagement ring going to have to rely less on the cutting math,
and more on their personal impression of the relative attractiveness of the stones that are
offered to them.

The cushion cut is a relatively new design. Its shape can be described as a combination of the
square and the oval where the sides are slightly curved, but still have something suggesting
corners. Cushion cut diamond rings manifests brilliance similar to round but is noticeably
different then a round which makes it unusual, and is the basis for the cushion cut diamond
rings appeal for many people.

Inventory selection has increased as it has become more popular. More often than not, it is set
in a prong style crown (the part that holds the ring). Full or partial bezel settings are much more

Cushions are popular in colored stones long before they became a standard diamond cut.
Rubies seem to lend themselves particularly well to the cushion cut. The cushion cut in rubies
appears to bring out the color and scintillation in an especially desirable way.

Sapphires can also serve as an example that can display a pleasant appearance when cut into
the cushion shape. This stands to reason since rubies and sapphires are simply different colors
but contain the same physical properties.

Princess cut
Princess cut engagement rings are more popular now then they have ever been. Next to the round
brilliant, The princess cut has pride of place. Often times they are slightly less expensive because more
weight can be retained when they are cut in the princess style. The faceting pattern is similar to the
round brilliant but, is adopted the square rather than to a circular shape. The cut proportion parameters
are not as precise as they are with the standard round brilliant. Consequently, anyone seriously
contemplating a princess cut within their engagement ring is going to have to rely less on the cutting
math, and more on their personal impression of the relative attractiveness of the stones that are offered
to them. People differ in shapes that appeal to them. Some people tend to instinctively prefer objects
that rely on straight lines, where others find objects with curves more appealing.

The first group are those who will choose princess cut engagement rings Princess cuts are popular in all
sizes of diamonds including very small stones which can accommodate designs that incorporate channel
One disadvantage of princess cut engagement rings is that they may have a tendency to chip when worn
a ring finger. The chips usually occur on the corners of the diamond. This can be minimized somewhat if
the crown and pavilion angles are steeper and the girdle widths are more generous at the corners.

The princess cut diamond can be set in any type settings but, crown set with prongs is the most
common. These cuts are perfectly square or somewhat rectangular. Most often the more squared shape
is preferred.

The emerald cut
is characterized by its rectangular shape. The emerald cut stone or diamond has a long and popular
history. The faceting pattern is altogether different then the other cuts. The particular faceting pattern is
referred to as the step cut. The pavilion (facets under the table) are horizontal as opposed to being
inclined vertically . Consequently, emerald cuts display a different look then other cuts. It displays less
brilliance yet is a very classic, which appeals to a great many people. Its look is one of tradition and
quality. This makes the stone appear softer (like a smile rather than a shout). This faceting pattern tends
to be priced less than most other cuts because more weight is able to be retained when it is being

Because the reflected light is less active, imperfections can be seen more easily. It is not uncommon to
see VSII imperfections in emerald cut diamonds or other gemstones with the naked eye. The same
imperfection would not be visible in a brilliant round cut stone. In some colored stones, the emerald cut
is the preferred shape. This is especially true of the emerald (which is where the cut probably gets its

Knowing the characteristics of the basic shapes will help you choose which one is most suitable for your
preferences, personality, and budget.

These are the most traditional and most popular choice for many women and couples. Round diamonds
are super-versatile and can be found in prong and channel settings, with or without accent stones.

The marquis is oval shape with pointed ends. This is made for long fingers and is worn parallel to the
The emerald is cut in a variety of gemstones other than the traditional green emerald. It is characterized
by a rectangular cut with trimmed edges. One must buy a very clean stone without visible flaws due to
its unforgiving nature. It also has less facets so will appeal to those who prefer less brilliance.

The princess cut has gained considerable popularity in the recent decade . The square shape appeals to
those who like straight lines and are not drawn to curves or circular patterns such as the traditional
round brilliant. It is also less brilliant due to its facet pattern. It is customary to apply square side
stones if the center stone is square or rectangular shaped.

The pear is also known as the teardrop and is most popular in earrings and side stones. It is preferred by
those who wish to elongate the look of their finger and is usually worn as a solitaire.

The oval shape is beautiful as solitaire or with side stones and goes nicely with any shape finger. It
appears larger in size compared with carat of the same weight. It is elegant and unique and chosen by
those who wish to appear more sophisticated.

Heart-shaped gemstones are rarely used as center stones for engagement rings. They are a sentimental
shape used for earrings and pendants more than rings. It is a complicated faceting pattern and is
difficult to make it look polished due to its odd angles.

This shape is the square version of the emerald cut with slightly trimmed corners. These are beautiful
and rare. Again, you need to consider only stones that do not have flaws visible as this cut showcase
flaws easily.

This triangular-shaped gemstone has 50 facets. The trilliant is rare and more expensive.
This cut is a square with deeply trimmed edges. Asschers are rare and beautiful. Very brilliant.

Commonly regarded as a more antique look, the cushion is generally worn alone and can be
difficult to find.

What Exactly Is An Ideal Diamond Shape and Cut?
If you want a diamond with maximized brilliance, you'll have to examine the depth.

Generally, the depth of the diamond will determine the amount of light that is reflected back to
the viewer’s eye. Too shallow a stone and the light will pass through it, too deep of a stone and
the light is lost as well.

To calculate the depth percentage of a diamond shape -- divide the depth by the width, and then
multiply by 100.

However, you don't have to go further into that if you buy certified diamond jewelry.

Certified Diamonds
That means that the diamond (-s) has been inspected and graded by a third party -- an independent
laboratory who specializes in diamonds and gems. The certification of a diamond guarantees the quality
and the characteristics of the diamond you choose to buy. A diamond certification confirms the 4 C's of
the diamond.

Two of the most reputable laboratories who certify diamonds are: GIA -- Gemological Institute
of America and IGI -- International Gemological Institute

A certificate from one of these expert grading laboratories will enable a reputable jeweler to give
you a market value for your diamond without even seeing the stone.

So instead of wasting time on 10 different diamond appraisers to verify if a diamond is accurate
with what the store is telling you, you can buy diamond jewelry that is certified. There are
however great variance in cost range when you take the cut into consideration, the polish, and
it’s florecents.

It is wise to hire a consultant to help you understand the difference between cuts, polish, and
proportions especially when buying online.
Gemstone engagement rings
Other than diamond gemstones as engagement rings are certainly not unheard of but,are relatively
uncommon in the United States. They are much more common in other parts of the world including
Europe. The gemstones used in engagement rings are usually those that are considered precious this
includes: ruby, sapphire and emeralds.

The disadvantage of using emeralds within an engagement ring is their proneness to damage. Ruby and
sapphire are not only beautiful stones, but their physical properties lend themselves to use in
engagement rings that are worn all the time because they are both hard and durable. Next to diamond,
ruby and sapphire are the hardest substance in creation and for that reason alone merit their inclusion
in gemstone engagement rings.

Gemstones in engagement rings are cut in all shapes and have an infinite amount of faceting patterns
available. The reason for this is that in gemstones (other than diamond) lapidary skill is tested by how
color is enhanced. Diamond cutting is primarily a mathematical proposition because the primary interest
is in maximizing the internal reflection of light. With colored stones, the lapidary goal is to increase color
and this has fewer dependants on mathematical precision, and more toward its orientation of the
proper axis to reflect the light.

Emerald engagement ring

Emerald engagement rings have pride of place among the precious gemstones. Its green color
represents spring time, freshness, and new life. These are all things that people contemplating
engagement can relate to. It is common in other countries for people to choose a colored gemstone
rather a diamond to be the center stone in their ring. It is not common in the USA. Perhaps for that
reason the US is the poorer in engagement ring styles. If one is enchanted with the idea of using a
colored gemstone as the major stone within an engagement ring, emerald should be given serious
consideration. Emeralds have been mind for thousands of years. The most notable mines are found in
Colombia. Although Emeralds are found in many parts of the world, the primary mining regions are in
Afghanistan, Brazil, and Zambia. Colombian Emeralds are often regarded as being the most valuable,
particularly those found in a very old mine, called the Muzo.

Color variance in emerald engagement ring
Regardless of where they are found emeralds have many internal imperfections that more often than
not are visible to the naked eye. The green of emerald can vary from very light green to very dark green.
The medium hues are modified by either blue or yellow. It is the mixture of these colors that gives
virtually every emerald its unique look. Obviously, price is related to beauty. And beauty has to do with
the shade of green as well as the absence of distracting imperfections

Shapes of an emerald engagement ring
Emeralds come in all sizes and when they are faceted they can be cut into most any conceivable shape.
The emerald shape is very common. But, they can also be purchased as rounds, ovals, marquis, princess,
emerald cut. There are some people who discourage the use of an emerald engagement ring. They
regard emeralds as relatively fragile because of the presence of inclusions that are generally found in
them. However, we know that emeralds have been worn for thousands of years and our view is that
aesthetic preferences should override any concerns about durability.

Emeralds come in such variety of color tones that it is wise to have an assortment from which you can
make your selection. Be wary of any emerald that looks to clean. Having selected the emerald of choice
you will then proceed to a selection of a ring style that you want to use with it. A general rule one should
not suppose that the selection of an emerald as the center stone should constrict the selection of a ring
in any way. Any ring that you might select for a diamond should work equally well with an emerald.
When having an emerald as the center stone you have some creative opportunities for unique design.
For example: If a row or rows of small diamond melee are used as accents in an emerald engagement
ring they can really enhance the emerald center stone. Perhaps even more than they would a diamond
center stone?

Durability of emerald rings
If one is concerned about damage to the emerald there are ring styles like the cathedral that can be
used to help protect it. Although, emerald is not as hard as a diamond, its hardness is adequate. Emerald
belongs to the beryl mineral class that has a hardness of 8. If after many years of wear some of the facet
edges are abraded and there are surface scratches that diminish the brilliance that the emerald
originally displayed, it can be removed for re-polishing with minimal weight loss.

Emerald enhancement with oils
Most all colored gemstones are enhanced in some way. The most common method of enhancing the
appearance of emerald is oiling basically this simply involves placing the emerald in a common oil like
cedar wood wear the oil seeps in the wherever porosity in the gemstone permits it. This oil can leak out
over time, and can be re-oiled as necessary. It is possible to purchase emeralds that are certified as
having not been oiled. If prices of natural emeralds are such that prohibits their purchase synthetic
emeralds can be acquired. Emeralds have been synthesized for almost a hundred years. Several
different processes are used. The most involved process creates the most natural look but, is also the
most expensive. However, the total cost is much less than it would be for a similarly looking natural
emerald engagement ring.

About tanzanite engagement rings

Tanzanite engagement rings can consist as tanzanite being used as a center stone or as accent stones to
some other center gemstone. This particular gemstone has unique color due to its pleochroism.
Consequently, it is very noticeable and tends to stand out when worn.

One advantage of Tanzanite is that is per carat basis, it is considerably less expensive than the more
popular diamond. Generally, the most valuable tanzanite is neither to purple nor to blue but, tends to
be more to the bluish shade with a hint of purple. It is also desirable to have deep saturation of that
color. Tanzanite can be cut in all of the popular gemstone cutting styles and can be accommodated to
the most conventional types of setting.

There is one big drawback to Tanzanite engagement rings that cannot be overlooked. Tanzanite is not as
hard as diamond, sapphire, or ruby. So, when the surface acquires a number of scratches, it loses its
luster, and will appear dull compared to when it was acquired new. The Tanzanite can be re-polished so
that the scratches are no longer visible. However, the stone needs to be taken out of the ring for this to
be done, and weight is lost from the gemstone during this process.

The second disadvantage of using Tanzanite in an engagement ring is that tanzanite has perfect
cleavage. This is a gemological term that refers to a tendency to split along straight lines. It is for this
reason that tanzanite is considered to be better gemstones for pendants, or rings that are worn less
often then engagement rings.

An aquamarine will appeal to those for whom Aquamarine is their birthstone, or prefer a large
clean stone with deeper blue appearance for a relatively low price.

An aquamarine engagement ring is relatively uncommon however, should not be discounted as it
can display a very pleasing color, if they are of the very highest quality. When one is looking for
a high quality aquamarine they should look for as deep of a blue color as possible. You may
consult with gemologist before purchasing a stone. Most all aquamarine is heated to enhance its
color. However, not all aquamarine attains a desirable color by heating.
An aquamarine engagement ring will appeal to people who enjoy a relatively larger stone. In
fact, apart from individual size preferences the case could be made the bigger the better. This is
because the larger the stone is the more potential there is for a deeper blue color.

The stone can found in various shapes and placed in any setting. It is the birthstone for March
and may have special appeal for people on that basis. Most often an aquamarine is cut in the oval
and emerald shapes. For that reason, the best selection of material will be found in those shapes.

Aquamarine does not have a lot of inclusions so that is not something that people considering
an Aquamarine engagement ring need to worry about.

The disadvantage is that the aquamarine gemstone may scratch more readily as compared to
some other gemstones.

The biggest advantage of aquamarine for an engagement ring is that you can have a very large
beautiful stone for very little money, at least compared to diamonds, or some other precious

Pearl engagement rings
Pearl engagement rings are relatively uncommon today. This has not been true in the past when the
pearl set in a wedding ring was very popular. This was true throughout history up until the 19th century,
when diamonds were discovered in great abundance in South Africa (Kimberly mines).

There is an abundance of choice within the pearl variety. The most popular is the round pearl. In the
past, these pearls you would find in jewelry were mostly natural. Today they are practically nonexistent,
and about the only choice available would be that of cultured pearls. These are pearls that are grown
the same way as natural pearls but the seed that is planted in the mollusk is intentionally implanted by
pearl farmers. This began in earnest in the 9th c Today pearl engagement rings would be commonly set
with akoya, or Tahitian pearl which consist of a variety of dark colors.

Pearls used in wedding rings should only be of the very finest quality which consists of size nacre
thickness, shape, roundness, orient, luster, and a blemish free surface. Typically, the pearls would be
half drilled and glued into a precious metal base.

The appearance of a single pearl engagement or wedding ring can be enhanced with other small
gemstones, and most commonly these gemstones are diamonds.

Disadvantages of Pearl engagement rings are that when worn constantly it can be prone to damage and
not expected to last a lifetime. Pearls take more abuse when worn on the hand, rather than when they
are worn in a strand, or singularly around the neck or in earrings.

However, pearl engagement rings can be replaced relatively inexpensively as compared to diamond
engagement rings.
'In a Christian New Testament parable, Jesus compared the Kingdom of Heaven to a "pearl of great
price" in Matthew 13: 45-46. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly
pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it."

The language of symbolism was in common use around the time of Jesus Christ; most people were
familiar with the symbolic meanings. The circle is a symbol of God because it has no beginning and no
end. The circle or pearl was considered to represent Love, Knowledge (the combination of equal
amounts of Love and Knowledge is a symbol of Wisdom, the 2 circles intertwined (owl eyes) is symbolic
of Wisdom. Some other pearls are Truth, and Faith.'

Colored Diamonds
Pink diamond
The idea of a pink diamond engagement ring became popular about 20 years ago, because many pink
diamonds were found in diamond fields that had recently been discovered in Australia. Before this time
there were so few pink diamonds available that is would never had occurred to anyone to get one.

A pink diamond is a natural color with which one would celebrate a romantic event, like an engagement.
Today most of the pink diamonds that are being produced come from Australia. They are produced in
large and small sizes, and qualities vary.

The most important variable when selecting material for your pink diamond engagement ring is the
intensity and saturation of the pink color. The more color saturation the diamond has, the more it costs.
They are much rarer than white diamonds, and so selection is more limited. Most of the pink diamonds
that one sees have a color tone that is subtle at best and does not stand out as an obviously pink

Pink diamonds are cut in all of the available shapes in which all diamonds are cut such as: round, pear,
marquis, oval, heart etc… Like other diamonds the decision in which shape to cut the diamond will be in
considering how much weight loss there is. However, with pink diamonds the cut is based upon which
cut will most likely create the pinkest appearance.

Canary diamond rings
Canary (yellow) diamonds can be found in a variety of intensities. The most intense yellows were
traditionally designated as canary. This is a very intense and pleasing deep yellow. They have always
been more expensive than any white diamonds and especially so now, since diamonds with color have
become more popular. Although almost all diamonds are white, diamonds do come in virtually all colors
of the rainbow. Traditionally, the most common non white diamonds were of the yellow variety.

Within the yellow ranges, the less yellow color intensity the canary diamond rings display, the less
expensive they become. The laboratories now have ranges of yellow saturations which tend to
determine the price ranges. There is a point where the yellow saturation is so minimal that is best
characterized as a yellowish non white diamond, and the pricing is actually cheaper than what a similar
quality white diamond would be. Large yellowish diamonds that would simply be color graded in the m,
n, and o range on the GIA color grading scale can really be rather attractive and in that sense are
reasonable priced.

There are some who prefer yellow diamond rings whose not natural but, has been induced
intentionally. This can be done by subjecting the diamond to high temperatures, high pressure, or both.
The appearance of the diamond is different than when the color occurs naturally, but some people may
not be aware of this. The price of yellow diamond rings where the color is not natural is less expensive
than naturally colored diamond, and are less expensive than white diamonds. There are naturally
occurring colored diamonds in all colors of the rainbow. Price levels are based upon color and
attractiveness. It is not easy to generalize. But, it can be said that reds, and to some extent pinks, blues (
the hope diamond being the outstanding example) are expensive . Browns, blacks, greens, champagnes,
and cognac are very inexpensive. .

Selecting a black diamond ring
Recently some companies and merchants have been promoting black diamond rings. Black diamonds
have been classified as ‘lower quality’ because they are not transparent in the same way that a white
diamond is. However, black diamond is still diamond and for that reason the facets can be polished to a
very fine luster and present a very reflective surface. Black diamond rings may even appear to be very
bright even though it is not transparent.

Apart from the aesthetic appeal that it may have for some people, the primary advantage of black
diamond rings is there relatively low cost. It should cost less than practically any other diamond ring one
could purchase.

Factors that go into cutting a black diamond are somewhat different than that of making a transparent
diamond. The ideal proportion concerns that one has with transparent diamonds are not as relevant in
the black diamond because very little if any light entering the black diamond is reflected back up
through the crown.

The most critical factor one is looking at when shopping for a black diamond rings is finding a black
diamond that has achieved the best possible polish. It is also important to get very crisp sharp facet
junctions (edges). This way some light can reflect of the black diamond.

Settings for black diamond rings
Black diamond’s can be set in rings in the same way that any other diamond can be set. It can be set as a
solitaire in a ring and it can be combined with a number of other accent diamonds or other colored
stones. When the ring contains creative use of other gemstones, the primary black diamond can be
more striking. One interesting style is to combine a row of white diamonds with a major black diamond
in order to produce nice contrast.
One shouldn’t imagine that just because a diamond is black that it won’t hold up. In fact, it has all the
wear ability factors that a transparent diamond has. The important point is that it will retain its original
brilliance because like any other diamond it is so resistant, if not impervious to surface scratches.

Blue diamond ring
A blue diamond ring is only one of the hues in an endless rainbow of colors available in diamond.
Unfortunately, natural blue diamonds are extremely rare. In fact, one of the most expensive diamonds
in the world is the Hope diamond which happens to be blue. Naturally colored blue diamond’s come in
a variety of shades. The more saturated the diamond is with the color blue the more expensive it is,
unless it is too dark in which case prices decrease.

Synthetic blue diamond rings
Today synthetic blue diamonds are available to the public. What this term signifies is that the gemstone
is actually diamond, and therefore has all the characteristics and attributes associated with diamond but
it has been manmade. This decreases the price of the blue diamond ring significantly and can be
acquired at far less cost than a similar appearing blue diamond rings that grew naturally.

A second lower price blue diamond ring would be where the color is artificially induced into the natural
diamond. What this means is that your blue diamond is naturally occurring but, the color has been
altered artificially. The diamond is usually of a brownish color prior to the color change to blue. Most if
not all of these diamonds retain their blue color indefinitely.

How do I know when a blue diamond ring is synthetic, natural or induced?
In every case, the merchant has the obligation to disclose whether or not the diamond is natural and if
the color occurred naturally. Regardless of its nature and origin a colored diamond is set similar to
transparent diamond rings. It is important to remember that it will wear like any other diamond. The
blue diamond can be worn as a solitaire in a ring, or like white diamonds it can be combined with other
accent diamonds or colored gemstones.

Setting a blue diamond
One could set a blue diamond into any precious metal. When gold is used a blue diamond ring is
attractive in either white or yellow gold but, in terms of today’s tastes, most people would probably
think that a ring made with a blue diamond should be made of white gold.

In principal, white diamonds set in a ring looks good on any finger. The same cannot be said of a blue
diamond ring. Anytime anyone introduces color into a gemstone he/she needs to be aware of whether
the color looks good on them (The undertone in ones skin can affect this) and whether or not it will be
compatible with the clothes they usually wear.
Gemstone Meanings
Famous Early Christian Art
Christian art is not limited to icons or paintings but, can be created and worn as sacred jewelry when
using gemstone meanings to illustrate a spiritual truth. Gemstones meanings conjure reflection and
meditation on the beauty of God. It celebrates the beauty and symbolism which lies within gemstone
meanings as found in famous early Christian art.

Some companies specialize in designing diamond and gemstone jewelry that is worn as a personal
reflection of what is meaningful to you. The designs you choose or create will express important spiritual
themes that are at the heart of the Christian tradition. Examples of spiritually motivated designs are the
patented 69 facet round brilliant diamond, trademarked as the Cross of Light diamond. (Design) and two
ring styles, Embraced and Divine Presence (Rings)

Christian designs represent an effort to re-establish the spiritually significant role gemstones meanings
and Christian jewelry played in the lives of religious men and women throughout history. Not unlike the
role that famous early Christian art played. The traditional linkage of spirituality and jewelry flowed
naturally from the important Christian belief that heaven and earth are full of your glory. St. Paul
expressed this (Rom. 1:20)” Since the creation of the world, invisible realities have become visible,
recognized through the things God has made." when he said that every visible thing in the natural-
created world is a revelation of something in the invisible heavenly-spiritual world. This apostolic way of
perceiving things continued for centuries. A sixteenth century example is St Theresa€™s perception of
the diamond as an image of the human soul.

The shattered Image

The modern scientific approach to earthly• things is not sympathetic to the traditional view. The
created world has been secularized. Consequently, it is more difficult for us to see the material world as
a revelation of the spiritual world. Diamond and gemstone jewelry has not been immune to this
process. In many ways, it has been its poster child.

Restoring the sacred image - Gemstones in the bible

Because of their rarity, durability and value, gemstones and precious metals were used quite naturally,
and often, in famous early Christian art. In the same way that Inspirational Christian art moves us, some
are creating diamond and gemstone jewelry for those who:
  (1) Know the difference between something that was designed to satisfy their personal vanities and
something that was designed to express their spiritual values, and

   (2) Prefer wearing gemstones and jewelry that was designed to remind them of their lifetime journey
with God.

the faithful serving in secret. As long as it is in the house, chalcedony does not shine but under the open
air, it brightens. This stone resists those desiring to sculpture or to cut it.

When however, those are compelled to go out in the world then their goodness is revealed and they
shine: and if anyone wishes to flatter them or to give them praise, just as if it were sculptured or
painted, they do not accept it but in fact, resist the praise with great strength.

what they know to others in word and deed. The gemstone meanings of Chrysies is said to mean gold,
which in turn is said to signify wisdom and charity, which is more perfect than all other virtues, just as
gold is more perfect than all other metals. It gleams just like a furnace and represents men and women
of perfect wisdom gleaming with the sacred.

and by the example of a good life.

14k gold Christian jewelry

14 kt gold has been used in jewelry to express people’s faith since the beginning of Christianity. Christian
jewelry has pride of place as an excellent medium to express religious truths for many reasons.

When it is worn, it is highly visible and becomes a part of the person. In this way, Christian jewelry can
become a personal witness and testimony that expresses who they are, what they believe, and the
nature of their spiritual journey.

Most fine 14k gold Christian jewelry is set with gemstones. Precious metals and gemstones are
beautiful, rare and possess great value. Because of this, the biblical and Christian traditions have used
them as metaphor. God is beautiful, and His value is infinite. Precious metals like 14kt gold and
gemstones have been used to symbolize everything that is holy.

14k gold Christian jewelry becomes symbolic through its form. Two of the most common forms are: the
cross and the fish. There are other forms that may not be exclusive to Christianity but have been
adopted by Christians because they express spiritual beliefs. An example of this would be the vesica
piscis. In recent times, some 14kt gold Christian jewelry has expanded beyond these traditional forms to
include more abstract forms of the dove or fire, both of which represent the Spirit of God. How modern
jewelry design has become so high jacked by the more materialistic views of the human person is not for
us to say, but there has not been enough jewelry design done that is beyond very simple forms, like the
cross. The whole jewelry industry has been more or less in bondage to a view of the particular person.
Now 14k gold jewelry is mainly used to glamorize the body and ego, in contrast to becoming an integral
part of their reflections on divine experience.

Unlike other liturgical arts (music, art, architecture, poetry) 14k gold Christian jewelry design has not
really expressed itself to its truest potential. We may be encouraged to see spiritual beliefs expressed in
forms that may have been created without any spiritual intent whatsoever because spiritual mysteries
are revealed in creation (Rom1:20).

Naturally the mind and soul can be refreshed through the eyes. Some people may even see meaningful
Christian reality expressed in jewelry forms whether or not those forms were created with religious
motives. Jewelry can be perceived as a Christian expression of divine realty when there is meaning
attached to it in this way.
There are other people whose faith is of such an individualistic nature that Christian jewelry is most
meaningful when they design it themselves (design your own).

Diamond shapes settings and styles
Diamond shapes settings and styles include the cushion cut, the princess cut, round, and pear, just to name a few.
The diamond shapes settings and styles are important to learn when designing your own Christian jewelry
because, each have symbolic meaning according to their, color, shapes, myths, and traditions.

Take into consideration the round diamond with its many facets. Some traditions of the saints have
compared the many facets to rooms within a castle, or parts of the journey of the soul. If this meaning

For the person in whom sacred moments like matrimony, the birth of a child, confirmation or vows of

way, the wearer is constantly reminded of being a light to the world.

When purchasing a gemstone with nice color saturation a bezel set can prevent it from displaying its
natural beauty.

Bezel set engagement rings are classified by the ring setting that has its precious metal pushed up all
around the stone so that only the top of the gemstone may be seen. The Primary disadvantage to this
is that people feel that it obscures the gemstones look or quality. The bezel set can make the stone
look darker because no light is allowed in through the sides or bottom. However, this problem could
lend itself to an advantage where a less desirable lighter colored gemstone may produce optimum color
by setting it within a bezel setting which produces an appearance of greater color saturation for
optimum beauty.

British crown jewels are an example of a bezel set

Bezel set engagement rings have always been popular although it has been used more in the past then
in the present. The choice of a bezel set is based more upon the characteristics of the overall design
than anything else. You can bezel set any stone as well as half pearls which are commonly set within a

Pave engagement rings
Pave engagement rings are rings that use a pave' style of setting small diamonds as accents alongside a
single major stone which most often is also a diamond. Pave’ is the most commonly used term even
though it is a French word whose English equivalent is pave (like a road paved with bricks). One can
think of a Pave engagement ring as a ring whose metal is paved with small stones. These small stones
can be of any variety, but more often than not are white diamonds.

For this reason, this style is usually cast in white gold or platinum, because the white metal blends in very
well with the white diamonds. Pave rings can also be cast in yellow gold but may feel this is not as nice a
look especially when diamonds are being used.

When pave’ setting is done, the stones are set so close together that when one looks down on the ring
all one sees is the gemstone, and the tips of the material that is needed to hold it in place. It has a very
elegant, soft and feminine look. The style has been in fashion for a long time and its appeal continues to
be undiminished. In fact, its popularity is as great now, and possibly greater than it has ever been.

Labor costs are a greater component of price with pave settings, because of the cost of stone setting. As
more and more rings are being made overseas in India and China where labor costs are low, these rings
have become more affordable then they may have otherwise been. For this reason, people may discover
that pave engagement rings are more affordable when bought off the shelf then having one custom

One way to minimize the cost is to complete the sides, or even the top or face of the shank with
engraving, which goes well with pave.
Tension set engagement rings
Tension set engagement rings utilize the characteristics of metals to embrace the gemstone. Tension
set precious metals are heated then cooled with a gemstone set in place while the metal contracts so
that it is held firmly in place.

Tension set has been available for some time, and was more popular a few years ago when its modern
appearance, simplicity, and clean lines were in high demand. With this type of setting the focus was on
the entire gemstone being seen and not covered up by setting the stone in a crown.

Tension set engagement rings are usually found with diamond, because diamonds are excellent
conductors of heat and can take a lot of heat without being damaged. It is one of the few stones you can
put a flame to without concern that it will damage it. We discourage tension setting with gemstones
because they could shatter. We recommend gold over platinum for choice of precious metal, because it
expands over lower temperatures.

Tiffany style engagement rings
Tiffany style engagement rings are typically defined as a solitaire ring that holds a single diamond.Tiffany
diamond rings are a simple design with a relatively thin band. This style can be found in white or yellow
or 14k gold, palladium, or platinum.

Tiffany style engagement rings will appeal to someone who wants a simple design that focuses on the
gemstone rather than the ring itself. Diamonds can be any shape in a tiffany engagement ring but, are
always prong set. The crown can be four or six pronged and the shape of the prongs and detail of the
crown are originally unique to Tiffany’s. It is a variation almost undetectable on a very common solitaire
engagement ring comprised of a 4 prong but, not limited to a particular metal. Tiffany style will appeal
to someone who wants a simple design that focuses on the diamond rather than the ring itself.

This shape is typical to an overall style given to models made between many manufacturers, and the
differences have become subtle and nuanced. Tiffany diamond rings have become more of a style than a
brand name, and a well recognized style used within every traditional jewelry store.

Designer diamond engagement rings
You may prefer to have a one of a kind ring, or designer brand. Most people when given a choice would prefer to
have an expensive looking diamond engagement ring, without the high price tag. We will show you how you can
have the look of a stunning ring for considerably less money. You are not going to get the "hope" diamond but, you
can incorporporate meaning, design, and good value and have a wonderful piece to reflect on for years to come.

Designer diamond engagement rings could mean a one of a kind custom designed ring, or a designer’s
diamond brand, or ring design. Some couples choose to buy off the rack. There are a number of reasons
for this. They may simply see a ring that is mass produced but, that they really like, and like it better
than anything thing they can imagine having. The allure of a one of a kind designer diamond
engagement ring vanishes in this case. However, most couples if given a choice would choose to have
one of the former custom made rings.

Another reason that couples forgo custom designed engagement rings is the common perception that it
is not affordable . This is a misperception. Although there are circumstances where customers
experience having to pay a considerable premium. This is by no means inevitable, or common. Generally
speaking, couples hoping to acquire a one of a kind ring should not be dissuaded from doing so because
of cost. In fact, many couples who have discovered that it is less expensive to get a unique one of a kind
piece than to by one off the shelf.

Deciding on a designer diamond engagement ring has its own pitfalls. The most obvious one is the
challenge of deciding whether or not to buy something that has not been seen. This pitfall can be
mitigated when the selection process provides for an opportunity to examine a wax model of the ring
being contemplated. Today computer generated images can be rendered and looked at from all angles.
Nevertheless, the finished piece is still a reality only in the imagination until it is finished.

When designing your own engagement ring or jewelry, it is best when the couple, designer and jeweler
all collaborate to the goal. This is a rewarding experience for the couple to remember for a lifetime.

Diamond engagement rings
Meaningful diamond engagement rings can come in many forms. Some like to have a matching ladies
and men wedding ring. They may find this off the shelf or have one custom made.

Expensive engagement rings
No one is ever looking for expensive engagement rings. Given a choice, most people would rather have
an expensive look but, without the high price tag. Since budgets are usually limited, it is important to
reduce the cost of these rings without adversely affecting the appearance of the ring. Generally,
engagement rings that have many diamonds mounted on it look more expensive than those who don’t.
No doubt a large center diamond will create an expensive engagement ring. It is being aware of how to
reduce the cost of the larger center diamond that allows you to have the effect of expensive
engagement rings without the high cost.

How to get the most for your money

Metals-The metal matters
Another variable in avoiding expensive engagement rings is the precious metal that is selected. There is
virtually no difference in either the appearance or durability of a ring that is cast in platinum and a ring
that is cast in gold. However, the price of the platinum ring will be almost twice as much as the gold ring.
The platinum ring will feel heavier than the gold ring. But a 14 carat gold ring can be made to a heavier
scale and perhaps be even more comfortable then the platinum ring.

    o Gold
    o Gold carats
o Yellow gold, white gold and rose gold
    o Platinum
    o Silver
    o Tungsten carbide
    o Stainless steel
    o Rhodium

Titanium engagement rings
People who are drawn to titanium prefer a more industrial or modern look. Although it is a white metal
it does have a slightly different appearance than the different carat gold’s, palladium and platinum.
Most people feel that it has a slightly darker or blackish cast to its overall appearance.

One advantage of titanium is that it costs much less than the more customary precious metals that
people use in the construction of fine jewelry. It also seems to wear well in rings. Relative to gold and
platinum, it is very lightweight, which some people consider to be a benefit.

It can be re-polished from time to time like gold, silver and platinum. A significant disadvantage is that
titanium engagement rings cannot be resized. People should expect that their rings will need to be
resized at some point in their life, and they may need to resize more often. The other more commonly
used metals can all be resized.
The interest in titanium is more recent and should not be regarded as a traditional metal for
engagement rings and wedding bands. It is much more common as a metal that is used for men’s
wedding bands, rather than for ladies engagement rings.

Merchants and margins
The cost of wedding rings is determined by the gemstones and the materials used in their construction.
The margins (mark up) which the merchant must have also affect cost. Margins vary among merchants.
So just like you might want to pay attention to the gemstone and materials that you decide to have in
your ring, the merchant is also a factor to consider when making your final selection.

Fake diamond rings
Fake diamond rings is a commonly used expression that is used to describe a ring that does not contain
a natural diamond. The diamond that is referred to in the expression can mean something that consists
of virtually any kind of gemstone material, and a variety of processes used to make the material.
Generally, fake diamond rings can be either simulants, or synthetics.

Simulants, refer to anything that looks like a diamond but, is something other than diamond. Examples
Include: plastic, glass, Strontium titanate, zircon, cubic zirconium, synthetic rutile, and spinel. All of these
faux diamond rings can look like diamond.

Synthetic refers to material that is actually diamond. But, is manmade and is not natural. Within the past
few years crystal growers have successfully produced diamond in sizes and qualities that make fake
diamond rings as good as natural gemstones. Often times the average person has a very difficult time
distinguishing the natural diamonds from simulant or synthetic. With proper training and instruments
distinguishing among them is not difficult.

Cheap diamond earrings
The major reason people want cheap diamond earrings is because that are buying a set of two. Among
all the jewelry categories, diamond earrings generally tend to use the lowest quality diamonds. Because
diamonds are expensive in comparison to other gemstones in order to make them affordable the
diamond quality must decrease. Fortunately, people can use lower quality diamonds but they need not
be so low that they appear low quality. One would want the diamond flaws to be microscopic rather
than visible to the naked eye.

The average size for diamond earrings is smaller than solitaires for your ring finger, and for that manner
it would hide imperfections better. Other options include:
Treated diamonds
These are diamonds that have technical things done to them utilizing pressure and or heat to improve
their appearance.

Synthetic diamonds
More recently cultured or synthetic diamond made in a lab has been made available, and is the same
properties as natural diamond. This may also represent a good choice when one is looking for cheap
diamond earrings.

Diamond simulants
Simulants are gemstones that look like diamond but are not diamond. These can also be used and create
a really nice look, if not a better look than that can be attained with low quality diamond.

The most common is cubic zirconium, otherwise known as CZ. It might be a good suggestion to point out
that just because CZ is cheap; it might be unwise to get a really large pair of diamond earrings because
large CZ may look more fake then smaller diamonds. A general guideline is that if you’re not a resident
of Nevada you want to stay under a carat total weight.

Antique replica engagement rings
Antique replica engagement rings are becoming much more popular today then they have been in the
past, and are currently being made because there is not enough original material in the market place to
satisfy the demand.

Antique replica engagement rings cover a large number of styles but most often characterize the styles
that were prevalent in 1920’s-1940. This is what most people have in mind when they are interested in a
replica of an antique engagement ring. When these ring styles are used for purposes of an engagement
they usually include diamonds. The ring can consist of one major diamond by itself or the major
diamond can be accompanied by a number of smaller diamonds.

Antique replica engagement rings do not usually have very large diamonds. More often than not, small
diamonds are used and then set in a plate which is made to the proper size to accommodate a particular
size diamond. The overall affect is to make the diamond appear larger than what it actually is. That is the
reason that this style of diamond setting is called the “illusion style”. Antique replica engagement rings
are very dainty in appearance and have a multiple cutout pattern. Large diamonds do not necessarily go
well with this style.
The antique style is very lightweight both in fact and in appearance. When this style is chosen as an
engagement ring the person should be aware that maintenance may be required down the line. The
very fine mesh type castings can develop small cracks but, these can be repaired.

Most often the precious metal of choice for replicating an antique style engagement ring is 14kt or 18kt
white gold. Platinum is also used because it is also a white metal.

Engraving is usually incorporated in the overall design. The engraving is done in a very detailed, fine,
intricate, detailed style. The engraving is done on the metal surface and can cover the sides of the ring
as well as the top. Sometimes the engraving can cover the entire ring. Often times it covers those
portions of the ring that are not set with diamonds. Engraving is an additional expense if it is done by

It is also possible to make a mold of a particular antique engagement ring that has already been hand
engraved. The patterns however are usually not quite as sharp, because of the casting process. It is
possible to engrave for sharper detail after the casting. Labor costs are much less this way rather than
hand engraving a plain surface.

We would classify vintage engagement rings as beginning in the late 19th century and continues through
the middle of the 20th century. A lot of people have keen interest vintage engagement rings. This
encompasses a large number of styles, but usually denotes pieces that are somewhat lighter in weight,
very intricate, and involve a lot of fine detail. Most would consider any antique, Victorian, or vintage
style, ring to have a strong feminine look.

The preferred color of the precious metal is white, and so the metal of choice is usually gold or platinum.
In earlier generations, there was a more diverse selection of gemstones within their engagement rings.
Vintage engagement rings that incorporate other precious gemstones like sapphire, ruby, and emerald
can create a very handsome look, and at the same time strengthen the vintage feel.

Vintage diamond engagement rings
Vintage diamond engagement rings can consist of pave', or a single solitaire stone. The solitaire stone is
not especially large but is made to look large by setting the stone in what is referred to as an "illusion"
style crown. This consists of a square plate that is mill grained around the edges. The diamond is placed
in the plate flush with its face. Gold is rolled up in the form of a ball onto the edges of the diamond with
an engraver. These balls hold the diamond in place. If there are small diamonds or pave’ they are often
set in a similar style.

Vintage diamond engagement rings are often cast in an intricate cutout pattern. Accent diamonds are
often set in the pave’ style and the rings usually include extensive engraving. The overall look is intricate,
lightweight, fancy, and detailed.
Christian theme jewelry
Discover how to design Christian theme jewelry that can speak to your soul. Jewelry designs with a
Christian theme help people express their faith and is often liturgical in the sense that it helps them
remember God. One can imagine that Christian theme jewelry can give wings to the soul.

Christian jewelry is a natural media for this because precious metal and gemstones naturally reflect
light, and have been used to illustrate paradise in the bible, and in the writings of the church fathers.
Example:”Christ is the light of the world"...ref.Ephraim the Syrean: 'you are raised up as a garment of

To certain persons, the sign of the cross appeared as light and plunged itself deep into the inner man. To
others at times there appeared a splendid robe...not made by human hands. After I received the
experience of the light of the sign of the cross. No longer am I a man that condemns anyone, but looks
on man with pure eyes and finds joy in the world. Macarius shares about his transforming experience of
the cross of light. ref. Macarius.

It is the quickening of a spiritual experience that one is after when designing and wearing this jewelry.
The design one chooses often represents a person’s spiritual journey. A representation of a defining
truth they have experienced in God. The visible reminder of this jewelry allows one to be 'dressed in
glory' giving tribute to Gods faithfulness in their life. All jewelry designed in this way is intended to bring
glory to God through a constant awareness and remembrance of Gods sovereignty.

Contemporary Christian jewelry

Contemporary Christian jewelry has become very popular in recent years. In the past, Christian
jewelry primarily consisted of cross or fish designs. People are expressing a need to wear more
contemporary Christian jewelry that is both more unique and meaningful.

The Christian designs are not limited to jewelry but to gemstones to reflect Christian themes
Christian jewelry is by no means limited to these traditional symbols. Designs that incorporate a
more contemporary feel will consist of cleaner lines and forms that appeal to the more modern

Precious metals within this design would be palladium, silver, white gold, and platinum. People
can either DIY (design their own Christian jewelry) or select from existing designs. Christian
jewelry can be more abstract and less conclusive to the average observer. And this abstract
form of jewelry is worn to express spiritual values and can be extraordinary meaningful as a
contemplative piece.
People wear Christian jewelry as a way to express the beauty of the inner sanctuary “Don’t you
know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit” (I Cor. 3:16)? and to decorate their robe of
glory or to remind themselves that they have put on the new man. (Col 3:10, Eph 4:24).

Orthodox Christian jewelry
Orthodox Christian jewelry has been used for centuries to express their faith. Compared to other
Christian groups, orthodox Christians have decorated their churches lavishly with precious metals such
as: bronze and gold along with gemstones. Remembering that their bodies are to be “holy places”1Cor
6:19, they adorn themselves with jewelry and gemstones that have been designed to reflect Gods glory.

In the bible, and throughout the orthodox tradition, gemstones and precious metals have been
recognized as a reflection of Gods glory. “As the light shines through the crystal so he revealed himself
to me as light.”St. Theresa of Avilla. The human soul was created by God to be a paradise, and his
sanctuary is seen by God as the holy city in Revelation. Orthodox Christian jewelry may reflect these
religious truths.

In Revelation, the heavenly city is being constructed with precious metal and gemstones. In the same
way, the soul in so far as it was created by God as a heavenly city, is likewise constructed. Jewelry can be
worn with those thoughts in mind. Orthodox Christian jewelry design can help Christians to proclaim this
truth to themselves and others. Like a stain glass window in a church can help illustrate spiritual truths
when the light illuminates it. In the same way, the saints were reminded of spiritual truths through
gemstones, because God appeared to the saints as light, like one reflected in a gemstone. There is
precedent in the church fathers for seeing gemstone and jewelry as a way to express divine realities.

Artisans try to capture these ideas through the adornment of the church with light from stain glass
windows, and the use of carvings, castings, mosaics, murals and the like.

Purity rings and Christian themed jewelry
Purity rings are worn as an expression of one’s commitment to stay pure until marriage. These are
typically a simple tiffany style diamond ring. This may or may not be incorporated into an engagement
ring later on.

The meaning behind purity rings is what one is looking for when a young lady turns 13, or is confirmed.
The symbolism behind the piece is what is important in the eyes of the giver, and to this point
meaningful Christian themed jewelry could be substituted for a purity ring if one so chooses.

The design above was created by Adamas Inc. and is called 'embraced'. The style of the band curves to
embrace a cross of light diamond. When she looks at this ring she will be reminded of the fact that God
embraces her. That she is the diamond for whom He gave His life is a powerful illustration of her sacred
purity. You may decide you would like to create a style that reflects your particular spiritual values. You
are only limited by your creativity. Adamas Inc. can create a custom purity ring from your illustration,
and mount any size cross of light diamond down to .15ct.
Today many traditional, contemporary or orthodox pieces can be designed for the young lady for whom this
jewelry will be given. You may consider a charm as a pendant or bracelet that she could add pieces to during
significant milestones in her life, like for graduation, confirmation, adult baptism, engagement, anniversary etc...
While selecting jewelry, consider her tastes in design as to whether she prefers curves or straight lines, the
simple or ornate, heavy or light, traditional or contemporary, yellow or white 14 kt gold or silver jewelry.

Christian jewelry charms
Christian jewelry charms are given for virtually any occasion but, the intent is to help the person
remember the meaning that the charm represents. Charms are one of the oldest forms of jewelry worn.
Christians have also adopted this form of jewelry and worn it for thousands of years.

Traditional Christian jewelry charms come in a variety of motifs and styles. The most common charms
are produced in silver, white or yellow gold. Charms are used on all occasions. They make nice gifts
because they are long lasting and have nice design. They are meaningful and charming, yet inexpensive.

The charm is usually worn as an attachment to another piece of jewelry. This other jewelry can be a
pendant, but is most often worn as an attachment to a bracelet. Charms that are stamped or cast in
silver have the advantage of being very inexpensive. The downside of silver whether sterling or pure is
its tendency to tarnish.

Gold by comparison is relatively expensive. Its advantage is its resistance to tarnish and its tendency to
look better longer, with a minimum of maintenance.
